Happy leap day! You have to celebrate something that only happens once every four years.

Today’s affirmation is:

“Whatever I need always comes my way.”
Download the audio version of this affirmation set to music from The Affirmation Spot.ray_kona.jpg

Notice the affirmation is not “whatever I want always comes my way.” There is a sense in which this universe is absolutely perfect in every single way.  What we need, we get. What we merely want, well, not always.

It’s just human nature. We have this tendency to confuse what we want with what we need. Our little egoic brain is busy all day long making lists of what it wants. It spends inordinate amounts of time and energy comparing its view of the world against the benchmark of its wants.

The abundance we enjoy in modern western civilization only exasperates this problem. Not only do we have to contend with our natural “want machine”, but we constantly have someone telling us to want more.

Worse yet, our brain sets up conditions for happiness based on its wants. Do you ever catch yourself thinking things like:

  • “If my football team loses the game Saturday, it will ruin my whole weekend.”
  • “I can’t be happy in this relationship unless my husband spends all of his time with me.”
  • “If I hit traffic this morning, it’s going to be a bad day.”

Your egoic mind wants your team to win the game.  Your egoic mind wants your husband to spend every minute with you. Your egoic mind doesn’t want to mess with the traffic.  So, like a child throwing a temper tantrum, it plants these kinds of thoughts in your head.

Your happiness is not really reliant on any of these things. These are not needs, they are wants. You might want them or want to avoid them really badly, but they are still wants.

A want feeds the ego. A need feeds the soul. A want is always expecting life to be all our way. A need fulfilled might come through joy or pain.

The fact is that God, the universe, or nature (depending on your beliefs) recognizes your needs and provides them in partnership with your own efforts.

What we need is not always what we want. Sometimes we need humilty. Sometimes we need struggle. Sometimes we need a challenge. Always, always (look back at your own life) when we get these unwanted needs we wind up stronger, happier, and freer.

There is nothing wrong with having wants. Wants are perfectly normal and natural. It’s when our wants become unbalanced with reality or even benefit that they become a problem.

Garth Brooks has a song where he says, “Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers.” There is a lot of wisdom in that.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

poet_pen_rs.jpgThis poem is an affirmation. I wrote this poem in 1994 as an expression of love for a certain person. However, as time passed, I realized that this poem can actually apply either to a romantic connection or to love in the broader sense.

“Opportunity” dares you to believe in love, trust in love, and to unabashedly share it with a special someone or with the world. It asks the eternal question of one who might procrastinate in sharing the love, “If not now, when?”

Read it and share it in the spirit that it speaks to you.

“The Opportunity of a Forever”

Never before in time and space
has this moment come about.
Never shall it come again.
Our lives are built on here and now.

Only fools would let this pass
without feeling what we feel.
Let us be calm and let us be bold;
face the fears before which we kneel.

If it’s our past that holds us back,
then let us create a new future.
One where joy fills our hearts
and these feelings of ours mature.

If it is failure we most fear,
then let us be filled with trust.
Knowing within that nothing is lost
by honestly expressing our love

obama.gifBarack Obama. His name seems to be on everyone’s lips these days. He has definitely been successful in (ugly marketing phrase coming) “creating buzz”.

Four years ago when he gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention there was talk that he might one day be a strong presidential candidate. No one anticipated it coming in this election cycle.

Afterall, Hillary Clinton was to be the next Democratic nominee and nothing in heaven or earth was going to stop her, if you listened to all the experts.

The experts did not anticipate Barack Obama. Mr. Obama is an outstanding orator. He is one of those rare speakers who can take a crowd and lift their spirits and raise their hopes. As he sweeps across the country like a Spring twister, he is doing just that to audience after audience.

What now seems inevitable is that Hillary Clinton has run into a buzzsaw of hope and optimism. The people are demanding something new and Senator Clinton only has more of the old to offer. Obama has taken 11 primaries and caucuses in a row and seems poised to leap Hillary Clinton’s Ohio-Texas firewall on his way to an historic nomination.

In previous posts, I have made clear my support for Ron Paul in this election cycle. His no nonsense and truthful description of the problems facing the United States are, in my mind, the best way forward. The Democratic big-government prescription proposed by both Obama and Clinton (as well as the big empire prescription proposed by McCain and mainline Republicans) seems to defy the Federal Reserves’ ability to print the money fast enough.

Still, I’ve listened and watched Mr. Obama with growing interest. He really does have some highly admirable characteristics as a speaker and a motivator. Many of us working in the field of human motivation and inspiration could take master lessons from him.

As Obama is now famous for saying, “Words really do matter.” People do need more voices out there offering the promise of a better tomorrow. Obama is filling a need for our nation right now. We have been desperate in recent years for a voice of hope and he is delivering. We’ve been existing on a steady diet of fear and more fear. That is toxic for a person and toxic for a nation.

Obama’s latest transgression, that has the establishment in both parties grimacing, is that he might actually talk to people on our “no talk” list. On this count, I am cheering. You cannot have peace or prosperity in the world when there are people you refuse to converse with. It is a ridiculous old line stance and Obama is rightly promising a new approach.

Barack Obama’s success, I believe, can be attributed to the fact that he is spreading rays of hope across the countryside. Even many Republicans now regard the Bush administration as years spent in the proverbial wilderness. Bringing hope in this envrionment is no small feat and deserves tremendous thanks. People are responding to Obama – the man – like flowers to the coming of Spring.

It is unfortunate that Barack believes government is the source of that hope. But for that one flaw, he might be the real deal. If we had a cabinet level position for motivation or inspiration, I think Barack Obama should be confirmed 100-0 by the Senate. There’s an idea – Secretary of Inspiration.

I wish Barack Obama only well. There is an increasing possibility that he could be the next President of the United States. From a domestic policy standpoint, that worries me. He seems a little nebulous on his position to undue the Constitutional damage created in the last few years. His spending proposals simply are not realistic given our monetary situation.

He does offer hope of a new direction in foreign policy. That is a positive that brings hope to millions. I hope he will follow through on those commitments.

However, I want to give him his due. He has added a positive perspective to this year’s election. For that, I salute him and offer my gratitude.

Be peaceful Be positive!

Truth: A Matter of Perspective – The Affirmation Spot for Monday February 25, 2008

ray_launchpad.jpgWhat Ray’s reading right now:

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose (Oprah’s Book Club, Selection 61)

Download a free mp3 affirmation from The Affirmation Spot.com.

Today’s affirmation is:

“I am transforming judgment into understanding. I am the source of change in my life, in my group, and in this world.”

mushroom_cloud.jpgHow you see the world is really a matter of perspective.  Your absolute conviction in the truth as you see it, can be absolutely rejected by the next person with the same absolute conviction. When these views collide conflict often ensues. That is, when we insist upon our way or no way.

The fact is that we are beings living in a world that none of us completely understands. We can hide that fact beneath layers of belief in some ideology, religion, or even scientific certainty. The fact remains; we never have all the facts to pass the judgment we are often too ready to pass upon others.

In a world being shrunk by technology and proliferating civilization ending weapons, we might be wise to take stock. Given our permanent state of uncertainty, maybe, just maybe, we should think about giving the other guy a break.

This can be as simple as, “live and let live.” You don’t have to agree with the other person. You don’t have to endorse their behavior. You simply have to understand that you can never completely understand his or her perspective and he or she can never completely understand yours.

The world watched this week as Slavic nationalism was stoked by the declaration of independence in Kosovo. Turkey has become emboldened to start a low-grade war with the Kurds in Iraq. We have the ever-present monotheistic struggle for dominance in the middle east. The problem shows itself everywhere.

Narrow-mindedness and tribal group-think were luxuries humanity has lived with, despite the brutal consequences, throughout its history. We have reached the point now where it is about to the break budget for our survival on this planet.

Saddest of all, there are forces on this planet who have powerful control over information outlets and government who thrive and profit by stirring the conflict that generates wars and foments hatred. They have played the masses like a fiddle to keep us divided and powerless. For our world to take the next steps, the people must see the manipulators for who they are and negate their ability to lead us around by our collective noses.

The alternative, should we persist in our unwillingness to take this approach in world affairs, is the destruction of us all. Who will be right then?

Albert Einstein is famously quoted as saying, “The world’s problems will not be solved by the level of thinking that created them.” We are a world in desperate need of a new level of thinking. We need a level of thinking that is not so sure of our group’s perfection and the other group’s evil. We need a level of thinking that sees people as the human beings they are and not subhumans summed up by the term “them”.

We have the power to change our perspective and mend our ways. We can and we must! We have it within us to say, “enough”. It all begins with “live and let live”. Until we are willing to do it, we walk on dangerous precipices.

Back in 2003, I wrote the following simple dialogue between a student and his teacher to illustrate this point to a friend during a discussion. I used a non-human thing to take the emotion out of it and help focus on the concept.

Student: Master, why do people not seek truth?

Master: People do seek truth, but they confuse personal truth with universal truth.

Student: Master, what is the difference?

Master: Do you see the rock over there?

Student: Yes, Master, I see the rock.

Master: How are you different from the rock?

Student: Master, I have intelligence and wisdom. I can change and grow. I offer more value to the world than the rock.

Master: So you are more important than the rock?

Student: Yes, Master, I believe I am.

Master: What do you think the rock thinks of you? Do you think the rock sees its place in the universe as more important than yours?

Student: Perhaps, Master, but that is the rock’s point of view.

Master: Ahh, your truth puts you at the center of the universe. The rock’s truth puts it at the center of the universe. WHOSE TRUTH IS CORRECT?

Student: Master, I know not.

Master: When you have attained universal truth you will no longer be concerned with my question. You and the rock will live in harmony rather than conflict; he with his truth and you with yours.
