Time to Be Who You Came Here to Be – The Affirmation Spot for Friday January 2, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

starfield2Unless you adhere to the most skeptical view of evolution, you probably believe that life has a purpose. There is a reason you – and everyone and everything that shares this planet with you – are here. Your very presence is a certifiable miracle.

Literally trillions of events in the history of this universe had to happen just right for you to be here. If any one of them had happened another way, then no you.

In my book, that makes your existence rather significant.

That begs the question. Why are you here? What are you here to be?

More than likely you know the answer to that question. It’s hidden or forgotten somewhere deep inside of you, but it is there. You’ve had inklings of it throughout your life. There are those things you just love doing and experiencing. There are places you just love to be. Perhaps at one time you dreamed of doing those things or being in those places.

Somewhere along the line your dreams and reality collided.  You gave up on the dreams to live in “reality.” “They” told you your dreams were not realistic and you bought it. My question to you is do your dreams and your reality have to be conflict? Can your dreams become your reality?

The great thinkers and spiritual teachers of our species have been clear and unequivocal in their conviction that our dreams can be our reality. Few things have been more universally taught.

That’s not to say that you can blink your eyes “Genie-style” and your wish becomes your life. It may take work. There may be challenges. You might have to make hard choices. None of the great sages ever promised otherwise.

Are your dreams worth it or not?

The joy and jubilation created by the new year will pass and “real life” will begin again. The momentum you need to make the changes you are promising yourself this year need to be boosted by something inspirational, if they are to survive.

Your dreams fit the bill perfectly. Suspend your disbelief and start walking in the direction of your dreams. As you get in better “dream shape” pick it up to a jog. By the end of the journey, you will be in full sprint towards your dreams.

Soon you will be embracing your deepest dreams and spending your days living your dreams instead of…well…dreaming about them. Belief and commitment are the only price of admission.

It’s time to “show up” and be the people we came here to be in 2009! Are you with me?

Stay awesome!

New Year’s Day 2009 – The Affirmation Spot for January 1, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“I constantly look for new ways to use creativity to enhance my work.”
(click the affirmation to hear it in mp3)

fireworks1As 2009 begins, 2008 and all its memories slip into the past. There they join memories from other years. It’s easy to allow our present to become a place where we long for the past. The past always seems somehow noble and safe from a distance. As long as we don’t live in the past, there is no harm in remembering it.

The past, though, has a lesson for the present. All those fond memories were once a “right now”. Did we enjoy them to their fullest when we were there? We remember them fondly now, but did we truly and fully experience their miracle then?

2009 is now full of potential and memories to be created. As we create them, let us pledge to live each one to its fullest and experience it to the max.

So what does 2009 promise? The words that come to mind are Transformation and Renaissance. There are some very hopeful and inspiring possibilities on the horizon.

Global – This year, I believe, has the potential for a Renaissance on so many fronts. It’s becoming apparent – as we’ve seen in recent months – that many of the ways we think about, see, and interact with the world no longer serve us.

Transformation is in the air as outmoded institutions and systems struggle to survive.  Renaissance is happening, but we must ensure it is the kind of Renaissance that leads to a freer, more enlightened humanity.

Bottom-up empowerment must win out against Top-down control. Centralized authority and control – be it governmental, economic, military, spiritual, or corporate – are the problem not the solution. These systems stifle the creativity and collaboration needed to advance.

However, these systems are going to try to hold on to power with white-knuckled determination. Their power and control are what they know and what they are comfortable with. In my opinion, it is not global recession we are witnessing, but global transformation.

That new posidigm is coming into view, but the existing negadigm is going to drag its feet. Wisdom and empowered thinking will be at a premium, but they will see us through.

Personal – Changes in the global system necessitate change within us. As we seek to grasp new models for universal advancement, we also have inner work that we know needs to happen.

Resolutions are great, but if you’re bold enough this year; replace your resolutions with revolutions. Your life can be transformed by this time next year, if you choose. You are the deciding factor.

There is no throwing the baby out with the bathwater here. What still works for the world and for us will remain. We are simply going to see a shedding of old paradigms created for another era. 2009 seems poised to be a pivotal year in this shift.

We are, indeed, living in interesting times.

Stay awesome!

Sit in the Driver’s Seat in 2009! – The Affirmation Spot for Monday December 29, 2008

captains_wheelIf your strategy is to let life happen to you; it will. It’s time to put you back in the driver’s seat in your life in 2009. Ask yourself, honestly, “Am I the driver or the passenger in my life?” Yes, I know we can’t control everything that happens to us. I also understand the wisdom of just being and going with the flow.

Neither is a reason to not be the driver in your own life. Things out of your control are going to happen whether you are the driver or the passenger in your life. That’s no reason not to be steering the things you can control. There is wisdom in “just being”, but it is so much more beneficial when done as a conscious choice to enhance your life rather than as the result of sitting in a rudderless boat.

Wayne Dyer talks about being not only the actor in your life, but also the director and producer. Actors are just given scripts that they then play out. They have no say in how the story line progresses. Directors make conscious choices about how the story is going to be told. Producers select the ideas that become the storylines created by directors and actors.

CHOOSE your storyline in 2009. It’s not enough to just tell or act someone else’s vision of your life. Put yourself in the driver’s seat.

Here are a few tips for putting you in the driver’s seat.

  1. Be the driver – stop seeing yourself as the passenger in a life where things “just happen” to you. You have a say and you have a lot of control over what happens in your life and how you react and adapt to it.
  2. Make the decisions – if you have become a passenger in your life, you have probably given control to someone else. Take it back. Be ready to accept advice from others (many heads are better than one), but make your own decisions.
  3. Take credit and responsibility – give yourself the credit for your achievements and take responsibility for your failures. Others play a role in successes and failures, but you are ultimately responsible for the results and choices in your life.
  4. Get back up – getting knocked down or facing a setback is an event not a way of life for people driving their lives. Life is full of bumps and bruises. Adapt and move on.
  5. Empower your thinking – practice empowered thinking. Here are the three aspects of empowered thinking.
    • Thought aspect – you have to think positively. Belief and commitment are important in any endeavor. Show me two people of equal talent – one who believes in his or her ability and one who does not – and I can tell you with high accuracy who will succeed. Positive thinking is imperative to maximize success potential in any endeavor. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t; you’re are right.” Positive thinking is the basis for empowered thinking, but empowered thinking is more than just positive thinking. It incorporates two more elements.
    • Knowledge aspect – you have to be informed. In achievement pursuits, know what you are trying to achieve and be informed on what is going to be involved in succeeding. Knowing that ahead of time can help you prepare mentally for it. When empowering your thinking to critically evaluate information you need to know as many of the facts as possible. Positive thinking without information does not allow you to take powerful action. When you combine positive thinking with information you lay the groundwork for powerful action in your life.
    • Action aspect – empowered thinking is more than just thinking and knowing. Empowered thinking includes action. If you have incorporated the first two elements, your actions can be motivated and informed. Until there is action, informed positive thinking is just wishful thinking. Your world is supported by intentions, but it is built by actions.
  6. Take action – the driver’s seat is a place of action. The passenger’s seat is a place of passivity, paralysis, and fear of moving forward and making change. Take action. Some actions don’t work out, but you cannot allow that fear to stop you from being the driver in your life.

If you’ve been the passenger for too long, make 2009 your year to shift back over into the driver’s seat. Take the wheel and start steering! If you’re already the driver in your life, keep the momentum going into the new year!

Be free! Be inspired! Follow your bliss!
