Say Absolutely! – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday April 27, 2010

Today’s Thought:

“When failure becomes your teacher, success becomes your future.”
~ Ray Davis

Have you ever noticed the power that words have to transform people and situations? Years ago I was teasing someone at work by saying “absolutely” to every thing she said. For some reason, it put me in the habit of saying “absolutely” to things in life.

When someone would ask me a question, rather than saying yes or sure, I got in the habit of responding, “absolutely”! I became aware that my own sense of resoluteness and confidence was buoyed by saying the word. I also noticed that other people seemed to respond well to someone saying, “absolutely”.

People would comment that someone saying that word so enthusiatically was refreshing and inspiring. So, I kept doing it. Today I answer absolutely practically and metaphorically in life. I’ve found the word has a power and surety about it that people seem to want to experience.

So, here is my challenge to you. When someone asks you to do something tomorrow say enthusiastically, “absolutely”! Amid the gray, unenthusiastic responses they experience all day, your “absolutely” will stand out.

Do I guarantee it? Absolutely!

Stay inspired!

Finally, the vernal equinox – the astronomical event that signals the beginning of Spring is here. The equinox occurs when the Sun is positioned directly above the equator on its northward track that creates the warming of Earth’s northern hemisphere.

The big event occurs early Thursday morning – 1:48 A.M. – eastern daylight time (EDT) in the United States or 6:48 A.M. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

To quote The Beatles, “It’s been a long cold lonely winter.” I’m ready! How about you?

Spring is my absolute favorite season. As the life returns to the world outside, I can feel the life swelling inside of me.

Today I am sharing two short Spring poems. I wrote “Springtime Moment” about 1991. It was inspired by a moment laying in a field on a warm spring day and taking in the moment. “Paradise” was written at about the same time. It was just one of those verses that appears in your head and you write it down and slap your name on it. May your first day of Spring in 2008 be filled with moments like the ones described in these poems.

girl_tree_hphones.jpg“Springtime Moment”

Spread out on the warm spring grass
staring at the vast blue sky;
conscious of my smallness.

In each cloud a vision,
sometimes objects sometimes faces
ever shifting their position.

Heavens slowly turning;
the curve of the world may be seen
by eyes cast upward in dreamy wondering.

“Paradise”

Serene little sparrow calls
Finding hidden waterfalls
Napping near flowing streams
Dreaming timeless vernal dreams

Sitting, soaking quiet spaces
Seeking, finding all life’s graces
Restful, thankful for this day
Simple blessings come my way.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

Juanita R. Davis

Juanita R. Davis – my paternal grandmother – was born on December 18, 1904. Despite debilitating conditions that began very early in life, she lived life with an undeniable vigor and spunk.

Later in life she became a prolific writer and poet. She was published in numerous newspapers and regional magazines.

She died in October 1988. Before she left this world she inspired me in ways she knew and in ways neither she nor I can understand. Certainly, I write because of her. All these years later, she remains one of the steady influences on my life.

As we get ready to say goodbye to winter, I decided to share one grandma’s many poems. It fully displays her ironic sense of humor and desbribes the unpredictability of the weather during our uneasy transition from winter to spring.

She titled it “We Take It As It Comes”.

“We Take It As It Comes”

There’s no accumulation
Was what forecasters said
There’s no accumulation
So had naught to dread.

I crawled beneath the covers
And went right off to sleep
The “no accumulation”
Is now six inches deep.

Today I made a pathway
Almost a sidewalk wide
With “no accumulation”
Piled high on either side.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

CALL Your Negative Thoughts – The Affirmation Spot for Monday March 17, 2008

woman_eyes_closed_sun_rs“Speak of the Devil and he appears,” goes the old aphorism. Some people in the positive thought movement seem to think the same thing about negative thoughts. They are something to be avoided at all costs. You must stamp them out like burning embers of a campfire to prevent their spread.

Obviously, the goal of positive thinking and affirmations is to diminish negative thoughts and counter them with positive thoughts. This is a worthy and highly beneficial goal that enahances your life.  Negative thoughts, however, are a natural part of being human. We all have them and we will always have them.

To panic and spend a lot of time concerning yourself with them, only causes them to blossom and grow. Recognizing them, accepting them, and letting them go steals their power and allows them to vanish back into the void from where they came. Having a negative thought is not the problem. Allowing them to become your habitual way of seeing things is what you want to avoid.

Actually, our negative thoughts provide a natural benefit. They spread light on the parts of us that need work and attention. If you always have negative thoughts about your job, maybe that part of your life needs some attention. If you have negative thoughts about certain people, those may be relationships that need work.

It’s rather entertaining sometimes to simply “thought watch”. Our minds are interesting things. When we relax, close your eyes, and watch your thoughts for a while you notice how impermanent thoughts are. They appear and create feelings. The disappear and the feelings disappear with them.

If your thoughts are very destructive and involve hurting yourself or others, get professonal help.
Here are four  things you can do to handle and live more harmoniously with common negative thoughts. They form the word CALL.
  1. Counter – counter your negative thoughts with tools like affirmations. Persistent negative thoughts can be countered and changed by offering a positive alternatives.
  2. Accept – accept that you will have negative thoughts and it’s OK. You’re human afterall. No beating yourself up.
  3. Listen – listen to your negative thoughts. They may provide insight into where you need to focus your self-improvement efforts.
  4. Laugh – some of your negative thoughts really are pretty funny when you get enough perspective. Lighten up and see the humor in the way your mind works.

I’m not saying don’t try to transform your negative thoughts into something positive. I’m just saying that when they want to come out and play, CALL allows you to say, “Bring it on!”

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!
