What Kind of Year Will 2020 Be? – Day 319 of 365 Days to a Better You

We did it! After much fanfare, we’ve entered a new year and a new decade. The natural question is what kind of year will 2020 be? We don’t need a crystal ball or big data to predict the coming year.

It’s predictable because of age-old measures that will determine where you and we will be one year from tonight. This year, like every other year, will be decided by your thinking, and your acting. It will be decided by stories you tell yourself about who you are and how the world is.

It will also be decided by the collective thoughts an actions of all humanity. Will we choose bright, unlimited horizons or will we choose to relive times of darkness and repression?

No one can stand against your determination to change your personal destiny. No power can stand against our universal aspirations, if only we remain determined and committed to making them our reality.

Yes! 2020 is not up to fate. It’s up to us. Let’s get started!

Just in case no one has reminded you today, you’re awesome!

2020 New Year’s Affirmations – Day 318 of 365 Days to a Better You

Today’s Thought:

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”
~ Bill Vaughn

As you look at that quote, which one fits you? If you’re in the first group, please keep that momentum flowing in your life and the world as you impact it in 2020. If you’re in the latter group, a new year is a new start. It’s a chance to ask whether that way of seeing the world is getting you where you want to go in life.

2020 promises to be an intriguing year. The divisiveness in our culture is running high. Many believe, “I have no choice. I must be at war for my ideas and my ideas must prevail 100 percent all the time.”

Such thinking doesn’t think of the well-being of all. Such thinking is eager to divide us against ourselves; a position that defeats us all, defeats our present, and defeats our future.

This not a world that has been thrust upon us. It’s a world we have chosen, even if unconsciously. We’ve dehumanized people for as little as disagreeing with us. These mindsets must not prevail in 2020 and moving forward.

Many still don’t realize, is that our minds (individually and collectively) are not separate from the world “out there”. Our thoughts are, in fact, the root system of the “tree” we see manifested as the “real” world around us. If you dig up a tree, you will find it all stems from its root system. If you dig up our world of events and experiences, you soon see it is made up of our thoughts.

The cross-currents of disempowerment will be many and vocal in this historic year. The pace of change – real and perceived – is going to pick up during this year because of the built up psychological expectations for it. That makes it more important than ever to empower your mind and think the thoughts and envision the world you desire.

I am posting New Year’s Affirmations a little early so that you can begin using them now to get your new year off to a great start. Here are 24 affirmations to get your new year off to an empowering start.

I recommend you begin the year with using either “this year” or “In 2020,” and as you get beyond the change of the year change it to “Today” or “Right now”.

  1. This year I AM the person I came to the planet to be!
  2. In 2020, I AM the change I want to see in my world!

Make a To-Be List – Day 2 of 365 Days to a Better You

I hope you got STARTED on a new goal yesterday. If not, start now! Today’s task is to create a TO BE List. Everyone has a TO DO List. A TO BE List helps you decide WHO you want to be at the end of 2019.

I’ve been doing this activity since 2008. I think you’ll find your To-Be list a very powerful tool. This became quite a thing about 2010 and now, if you Google it, you’ll find this idea everywhere.

You are a human being not a human doing. All the dos in the world won’t make you the person you want to be unless you have clear targets for it.

Here are some instructions I put together to help you.

To-Be List Instructions

Please leave your list below in the comments. I can’t wait to hear you will be one year from now!

Get Started Right Now Not Tomorrow – Day 1 of 365 Days to a Better You

start-line-3449607_1280 (1)Happy New Year, my friends!

It’s New Year’s Day. Time for new starts and a new you. No, not a you fashioned by popular trends or society’s expectations. The you – yes THAT you – you’ve wanted to be for years.

BUT, it’s not a day to make distant promises. It’s a day to get started. You know that thing you’ve wanted to do since 20…? Make some time today to take positive steps towards it. NOW!

January 2 may seem like a better day to start than January 1. After all, today’s a holiday. Great people achieve great things while everyone else is watching football or the Food Network. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying those things. Just know that if you do what everyone else does, you’re going to get what everyone else gets.

If you want more, you may find yourself working around edges beyond what others do.

Henry David Thoreau promised, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

You’ve got this! We’ll check back in on your progress.

I believe in your dreams. Meet me halfway and believe in them too.

Create a TO-BE List for 2019

to_be_listOur society is built on getting things done. Productive action is an important ingredient to our success. The “To-Do List” is a staple of our productivity society.

We make these lists to remind us of the tasks we need to complete in a day, a week, or some other time period. Some people use them as a guide, while others meticulously check off each task as it is completed.

The super-organized among us are probably already creating their 2019 To-Do Lists. Nearly all of us are thinking about the things we “have to get done” in the next year.

Numerous motivational speakers and spiritual teachers have commented that we are human “beings” not human “doings”. This is commentary on our propensity to focus on the doing at the expense of the being.

Their goal is to remind us that we are here as surely TO BE as we are to do. They are suggesting an imbalance in our lives between doing and being. With our fast-paced, modern, rush, rush, rush society; who can argue?

The extreme answer to reducing your “doingness” is to sell your possessions and go live as a monk on a mountain top somewhere. You could then spend your entire life just being. That’s not a realistic or even appealing option for most of us.

So, how do you find a beingness/doingness balance in your life? How do you keep yourself reminded to “just be” or to become who you want TO BE?

Create a To-Be List. I know, I know, I see the paradox in suggesting a doing to improve your ability to be. Life is full of paradoxes.

Your To-Be List has two aspects:

  1. Planned Beingness – these times can go right on your calendar along with your to-dos. They are planned times in your day or week where you plan to just be. Just being can mean meditating, sitting quietly, or brainstorming…you get to define what it means for you. There are just two rules. This time must be time away from your To-Do List activites. You’re not doing any of them or thinking about them. PLANNED BEINGNESS IS YOU TIME. Place this in your daily To-Do List or on your calendar. Plan your beingness.
  2. Visionary Beingness– answers the question, “Who do I want TO BE a year from now?” A To-Do List enumerates the tasks you want to get done in the next year. Your To-Be List can enumerate the characteristics you want TO BE in the next year. These can be self-development goals, career goals, or personal characteristics. This is your list of things TO BE in the coming year. It’s an organized way to spell out who you want TO BE the same way you list what you need to do. Examples include the following.
    • By ______, I will BE less judgmental than I am now.
    • By ______, I will BE more courageous in following my dreams than I am now.
    • By ______, I will BE in a managerial role.
    • By ______, I will BE more at peace than I am today.
    • By ______, I will BE a more accomplished writer.
    • By ______, I will BE a more effective business owner.

Tips for Success:

  • Make your To-Be List as important as your To-Do List.
  • Use existing tools like your current electronic calendar or hard copy planner to create your To-Be List right along side your To-Do List.
  • Make it part of your routine.
  • Spend time each day reviewing your To-Be List just as you do your To-Do List.

By making time TO BE, you will experience greater peace and contentment. By envisioning who you want TO BE, you are focusing your mind and your efforts to create the circumstances, opportunities, and intention to make it so. Create an expectation that you will complete your T0-Be List the same way you complete your To-Do List and you will!
