Contact is a 1997 movie based on a book by Carl Sagan and starring Jodie Foster. It is one of my all-time favorite movies. Foster plays Ellie Arroway a highly-driven, highly rational astronomer searching for extraterrestrial life.

Her ridiculed search becomes an international sensation when her team detects a sentient message coming outer space. The message contains instructions for building a vehicle to rendezvous with the aliens. After a few twists and turns, Arroway winds up being Earth’s representative.

Her spiritual skepticism is tested when she has a profound experience that defies scientific explanation. The following scene includes her voyage to the rendezvous point and her meeting with an alien who represents himself as her father.

The key is the message delivered by the alien about how important we all are. The scene has unforgettable imagery. Enjoy and remember all we have is each other!

Upon return, Arroway has to explain her unprovable experience before a Congressional committee investigating the whole situation as a fraud. She makes an impassioned speech wishing that everyone could see what she has seen.

A New Sun Is Rising – The Affirmation Spot for Monday December 22, 2008

apollo_sunrise Today’s entry is a multi-paragraph affirmation that captures the essence of a dream I had several years ago. May it inspire hope and remembrance in all who read it today. Remembrance that the world we live in is a choice not a prison sentence. We can have a world rooted in peace and driven by the potential extant in each of us, if that is world we expect and demand.

If we continue accept less, then that is the reality we will continue to experience.

This affirmation calls on us to expect more of ourselves, each other, and our leaders. It reminds us that a new and better day is right here ready for us to awaken to it. Some have. Some are. Some will. Some are fighting to hold on to the old world. Which are you?

A world in which our fondest dreams shall come to pass. Where the greatest potentiality of humanity is realized: that each member of the human family will awaken to the inner light that opens one’s heart and frees one’s mind to look across culture, race, gender, religion and vast distance and see oneself.

Be of good cheer, o patient ones, for this new day dawns; a day of wonder and hope. A day, when filled with joy, all people shall attain their full potential. Long has been the night of toil and pain. Too long have brothers and sisters lived according to their fear of each other rather than their love for each other. But no more, the blinders have come off.

Finally and forever the Human Race will stand in the radiance of the truths that have lived within each of us all along. Truths that can no longer be ignored or distorted. The truth of our UNITY and our place in this planet’s web of life and in the greater cosmos beyond.

Tired of Negative Campaigns? Look for the Good – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday October 30, 2008

Regardless of your political views, it’s hard not to turn sour in the face of the negative campaign onslaught as this election cycle draws to a close.

This year is turning particularly ugly with loaded words and innuendo running amuck. Your biggest fear becomes that they all might be right about each other.

Words fly like “unstable”, “risky”, and “socialist”.

Some day, perhaps, we will have politicians (and their surrogates) who are able to articulate their messages like adults to audiences who behave like adults. Someday maybe we will reward candidates who speak to our highest hopes not our worst fears.

One day we may have an electorate that demands better behavior by punishing this kind of negativity at the ballot box rather than revelling in it. We will banish politicians whose only case for office is a negative case against their opponents.

To the extent we are divided by our elected officials, it is because we have accepted it and not demanded more.

One day these things may come to pass, but we do not yet seem to live in that world in 2008. So what can you do to counter all the negativity?

One group is taking positive steps to counter that negativity and encourage others to do the same.

LookForTheGood.org is encouraging people to stay positive this election season and offers tips on how to do your civic duty to pay attention to the campaigns without giving in to the negativity. Their mantra?

“This election season, make a positive difference…and remember to look for the good.”

A World About to Be Born – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday January 9, 2008

The sun is rising; the clouds have passed away. And in the minds of at least a few, a greater consciousness has arisen.

Tradition is no more. There is only awareness: an awareness of radiant possibilities and transcendent hopes for a world about to be born.

A world in which our fondest dreams shall come to pass. Where the greatest potentiality of humanity is realized: that each member of the human family will awaken to the inner light that opens one’s heart and frees one’s mind to look across culture, race, gender, religion and vast distance and see oneself.

When human beings can join together in this moment, free of all constraints and limits; simply experiencing their existence and connecting to the life force that flows through the universe in the most real and sincere way —THAT IS NIRVANA.

I speak not of a mystical experience to be had by a select few, but rather of the courage of anyone to remain completely present in this moment without attachment to outcomes or results. So I call myself a dreamer resolved to stay with this moment, where my heart may express tenderness and appreciation for all that is. For my heart is the birthplace of compassion for myself and this world.
