Five Principles of Gratitude

little girl and teddy bearIn The United States, we are entering the Thanksgiving season. It’s a moment to stop and reflect on how much to be thankful for – your spouse, children, grandchildren, your health, your job, or even food on the table. Even if you have none of those things, you have life and the opportunity to grow and to change. That is a the greatest blessing of all and everyone has that.

Here are five simple principles of gratitude that help you achieve it.

  1. Acceptance – we may not always like the way things are. We may want to change them. Acceptance is not acquiesence. However, to feel gratitude, we must learn to accept what is in this moment. It does not mean giving up on the change we hope to create, but rather surrendering to what is at this moment.
  2. Appreciation – we experience more gratitude when we take the time to more fully appreciate the people around us and the many blessings that come into our lives. If you feel a lack of gratitude, things to be thankful for are right there for the remembering. (58 Things to be Thankful For)
  3. Giving Back – we often feel gratitude when we receive. However, the reciprocal nature of giving and receiving promises that the more we give the more we will receive. By giving, we are setting ourselves up for more opportunities for gratitude in our lives.
  4. Honesty – gratitude is definitely one of the most sincere, authentic emotions we can experience. There is nothing phony or contrived about true gratitude. It is a feeling of connection and genuine love for our time here on Earth.
  5. Happiness – Happiness and gratitude are inseparable twins. It’s almost impossible to be happy without a sense of gratitude and certainly gratitude breeds happiness. If you want to feel more gratitude, be more happy. If you want to be happier, try a little more gratitude.

I recently wrote and recorded three gratitude affirmations and posted them to my website. These affirmations are written to help you remember to be thankful for the wonderful things in your life.

Mind, Body, Spirit Beautiful – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday September 16, 2008

Remember this about yourself all day long today. Every time the world starts to pick on you or you doubt yourself remember this simple affirmation. (Run time is 1 minute 43 seconds)

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday July 15, 2008

They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. When was the last time you looked into your soul?

Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror? I mean really look at yourself? I’m not talking about the kind of superficial looking you do when you comb your hair or put on your make up. I’m not talking about the kind of looking you do when you judge yourself because you added five extra pounds.

I mean really meditating on that person facing you in the mirror. I mean looking deeply into his or her eyes.

You look into the eyes of every other person you care about. Why not your own? Have you ever stopped and really become totally aware of that person staring back at you? Are you ever completely conscious that is YOU staring back?

If you’ve never done that or it has been a while, I want to encourage you to do it today. Take a few moments and really look at the person staring back at you in the mirror. It may seem a little uncomfortable at first, but stay with it until you really connect.

What potential does that person possess? What is he or she doing well? Where are the areas of potential improvement? Who are you? Where have you been? Where are you going?

When you look deeply you see that you have so many gifts, talents, and blessings. When you look deeper still you see that the form in front of you is just the shell of something far greater.

You see, we humans have this tendency to get caught up in the physical and the tangible. Those parts of us are the proverbial tip of the iceberg in comparison to the nonphysical and intangible parts of us.

When you have your mirror moment look deeply and with compassion. The person you find staring back is full of more potential, more possibility than you could ever have imagined.

Once you get past the shell and see the soul all things become possible.

From Ray’s Desk…

Hello, TAS friends

The past month has witnessed two major natural disasters in Asia. It’s an odd conundrum that the worst events bring out the best in the human spirit. People and nations around the world are mobilizing to help the people of Myanmar and China.

I think the reason these tragic events stir us so and bring out our best is that they remind us that we really are all in this together. We may differ politically, religiously, or economically. On ordinary days, those issues seem to matter so much.

However, when faced with unimaginable destruction and suffering, we seem to instinctively pull together. Maybe, in those moments, we are jolted awake to the fact that behind all our egoic masks and facades we are all subject to the same unpredictable whims of existence.

Such events can drive us to depression and withdrawal or engagement and enlightenment. They can create the thought that life is short and meaningless or that life is short and oh so precious.

There are circumstances beyond our control, but our thoughts and actions are always within our control.  When we realize that simple fact we are empowered and energized to pick up and move on from tragedy in our lives and in the world.

The Affirmation Spot Partners with Feed The Children

There are so many children who suffer on this planet every day. Sometimes it is the result of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the recent typhoon in Myanmar, or the Chinese earthquake. In other places, it is due to war, poverty, and other political conditions.

Founded in 1979, Feed The Children now has a presence in all 50 U.S. states and in more than 60 countries around the world. FTC delivers water and beverages, food, medicine, clothing, and much more – the necessities of life – to children and their families in distress.

The primary objective of The Affirmation Spot is to help people. The affirmations and other digital products we offer focus on improving the mental and spiritual aspects of our being. However, we cannot overlook the real, material needs of people.

That is why I am proud to announce a new special project in partnership with Feed The Children. I hope this pilot program will be the beginning of a long relationship with FTC.

Here is how it works.

May 15, 2008 – August 31, 2008

The Affirmation Spot will donate $.05 US for every $0.49 affirmation sold and $.10 US for every $0.79 or higher priced item sold to Feed The Children.

That means you can now help others as you are helping yourself. You get the affirmations and other positive thought products you want and you are helping Feed The Children too.

We will be providing monthly updates (on www.theaffirmationspot.com) on how much is donated through this program. Of course, the program is only as successful as we make it.

Together we can help children around the world.

Tips

The Tips section offers updated information on the website and helpful tips to using affirmations.
  • Newest Affirmations – The Affirmation Spot has a new link on the side menu called Newest Affirmations. This section provides links to the newest affirmations on the website and the dates they are posted.
  • Passive Listening – Listening to your affirmations passively is a great way to infuse them into your self-talk without your conscious mind interfering as much. Listen while you work or do other activities that require most of your attention. By the same process that helps you learn the words to a song you didn’t know you were listening to, you will find your affirmations coming to mind more easily.
I appreciate your comments and thoughts about the Ezine or the website. Please feel free to contact me with your thoughts, ideas, or suggestions.

My wife and I leave for our long-anticipated return trip to Hawaii tomorrow. Blogs may be a little sparse for the next ten days although it is my plan to blog a couple of times on the trip.

Hopefully, I will have some great experiences and maybe some pictures to share.
We are doing the island-hopping tour aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Pride of America. It’s a slightly smaller ship than the former  Pride of Hawaii (our ship last year), but still large, elegant, and beautiful looking ship.

The seven-day cruise aboard a Free Style NCL ship is definitely the way to see the islands. You travel at night and arrive in your new port each morning. There are a wide array of excursions that allow you to experience many aspects of the islands.

One of the things April and I loved so much about Hawaii is the Aloha Spirit. I found two really good descriptions of the in-depth meaning of Aloha – beyond just love, hello, and goodbye.

What is the Aloha Spirit?

The Aloha Spirit

May your day and your life be filled with Aloha!

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!
