6 Steps to A More Authentic You

Today’s Affirmation:

A new day dawns…I am a new person today; a better person, a healthier person, a happier person.

lao.gifToday’s thought comes from the ancient Chinese Book of Wisdom, The Tao Te Ching (pron. Dao De Jing) “The Book of the Way”. Little is known about its author, Lao-tzu, other than he was probably an older contemporary of Confucius.

“Tao” has many possible English translations among them would be “The Way”, “Ultimate Truth”, and “That which underlies all that is.”

“Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success or failure: which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never truly be fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the WHOLE WORLD belongs to you.

True perfection seems imperfect,
yet it is perfectly itself.
True fullness seems empty,
yet it is fully present.

True straightness seems crooked,
True wisdom seems foolish.
True art seems artless.

The Master allows things to happen.
She shapes events as they come.
She steps out of the way
and lets the Tao speak for itself.

Tao Te Ching Verses 44 & 45

The passage encourages us be authentically ourselves and truly follow the impulses of our hearts rather than the dictates of the herd. The problem is that after many years of living “by the appearances” we find ourselves unable to tell the difference.

How do you get back in touch with your authentic self? In my experience, I’ve found the following 6 steps effective.

  1. Quiet – quiet time is the first prerequisite to self-understanding. You need a space to be, to listen, and to ask. It is no accident that every spiritual traditon suggests quiet prayer or meditation.
  2. Question – once you establish a quiet space begin to question yourself. Think of yourself as a friend you are trying to help. Ask questions that prompt thought and help you assess your true needs and feelings.
  3. Listen – asking questions is not enough. You need to listen, really hear, the answers coming from within.
  4. Understand – follow up on your initial answers by probing deeper. Really seek to understand your needs and feelings.
  5. Act – when you truly understand your needs and your feelings and successfully block out the voices from the herd, you can take action. When that action is aligned with your underlying needs and feelings you are on your way to being authentically you.
  6. Allow – the passage also points out that there is wisdom in letting things happen as they do and accepting them as they are. This does not mean you give up on your dreams and goals or stop trying. The acceptance mindset is simply one that removes the pressure to be perfect.

Outside influences will always be there, but you need not sacrifice your sense of self for them. Things beyond our control are always going to happen. No amount of worry, no pill or technology science will ever invent can alter the circumstances of the human condition.

Nonetheless, being authentically yourself, accepting what is, and being at peace with all things helps you to weather life’s storms. It also helps you grow and flourish when the storm passes. You are back in the drivers seat in your life. The concern for appearances and the controls of the herd melt away. You are authentically you just as creation intended you to be all along.

Try, just today, to truly be YOU in every way and get out of the way so the universe can work its perfection.

Follow your bliss. Experience your bliss. Become your bliss.

Three Steps to Following Your Bliss – The Affirmation Spot for Friday March 7, 2008

Joseph CampbellThe famous comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell once said:

“When you follow your bliss… doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors, and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.”

By bliss, Campbell was referring to your true life’s purpose. He meant those activities, things, or people that are your reason for being.

What is your bliss? Do you know? Have you found it? These are questions you must answer for yourself.

Not one other person on the planet can answer them for you. That’s what Campbell means when he talks about the doors that wouldn’t be there for anyone else. The doors are individual to each of us. Think about that for a moment. You and only you have the password to unlock certain untapped, unique potentials that can be born into this universe only through you. How is that for important?

Follow these three steps to discover your bliss:

  1. Find it – Your bliss is what lends more meaning, gives more joy and more peace, and provides a greater sense of accomplishment than anything else in your life. What is your bliss? The answer may or may not be readily apparent. You might have to do some significant self reflection to discover it. Is your life aligned with those things?
  2. Believe it – Believe you can follow your bliss and succeed. We too easily discount our bliss as unrealistic or not possible. Ask yourself, “Is not following my bliss more realistic?” What are the costs to ignoring your deepest impulses? You have to believe these profound instincts are important enough to act upon and you need to believe!
  3. Pursue it – once you identify your bliss, pursue it with passion. Campbell relates, from his study of myriad myths and allegories from around the world, that when a person follows his or her bliss with passion; the universe or God opens the pathway to achieve it.

Once you find your bliss, believe it, and begin pursuing it with passion, watch in amazement as the universe rearranges itself to come to your aid.

Follow your bliss! Experience your bliss! Become your bliss!

“My thoughts, my words, my actions really do create my world. That is why I think great thoughts, I say great words, and I take great actions.”

Today’s article is a prayer I wrote back in 1993. I was at a very low moment in my life. On a particularly depressing day, this prayer suddenly emerged into my thinking. I felt compelled to pick up a pen and paper and write it down. It just seemed to gush out of me.The whole process took less than 10 minutes. For me, this prayer is a reminder that even the darkest moments of our lives contain within them the seeds of our healing.

I call it Prayer of Affirmation because, as you will see, the prayer is full of affirmations for the person praying it and for our world. May it bring something meaningful to your day.

christian_girl_praying.jpgI ask that I might be an instrument of peace in the world today. May I take care to think only thoughts that lead to a positive world for myself and for others. Help me to bear in mind the effect my thoughts have on the world that I come to experience. May I join with other compassionate souls to lend my thoughts and efforts to creating a better tomorrow for us all.

I am taking action to make the world a better place in every I affect it today. May I find peace and healing for myself as I work to be part of the solution in the world.

Grant me the strength within to love all living things and to make a positive impact on every soul I encounter today. May I attract positive people and circumstances to me that I may be more effective in my undertakings. May no one be too important nor to unimportant to greet with a kind word.

I seek the strength to live completely in love; releasing all my fears. I grant forgiveness to myself for all I hold against myself and for all I hold against another. May I be a tool of healing in the world.

I ask for the fortitude to be the embodiment of selfless harmony to whatever extent I am able today. I will be generous with my time, my resources and myself to the best of my ability without resentment or reluctance. For I know that what I give others I give to myself as well.

I seek happiness, peace, and freedom from suffering today. As such, I wish it for all beings as well. I am thankful for all that I have been granted. I am thankful for the beauty and harmony that exists all around me, if only I am willing to see it.

Finally, I seek a patient acceptance as events unfold in my life. Help me to see the big picture and not get bogged down by unimportant details. I understand that all I experience is chosen by me at some level for my benefit. Thus, I seek to understand, to learn, and to open myself to new possibilities.

Amen

I hope everyone is enjoying the last gasps of winter. Now the time has come to begin moving into a Spring mentality.

Seasonal changes are gentle reminders that change is an inevitability in our lives.  The question for us to answer is whether we will be the authors of the change or its victims? Change is a hot commodity right now. The presidential candidacy of Barack Obama has focused on change as a theme. We seem to want change, but we must embody any change we hope to see in ourselves or in the world.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “We must be the change we want to see in the world.”

Here is a question for you.

Are you where you want to be in your life? Personally, spiritually, financially? Are you ready to be the change you want to see in your life?

You know the changes you want to make. Somewhere you probably have a list of changes you want to make. They’re probably left over from some New Year’s resolutions or the plan you started planning a new life strategy last summer. Human nature, though, is to put them off. We convince ourselves to wait for a better time.

Mark Twain once said, “I fully support progress. It’s change that I object to.”

As ever Twain was speaking tongue-in-cheek, but his statement is true of many of us much of the time. We want t to improve our circumstances. We are simply unwilling to make the changes necessary to bring the improvements about. And so, we miss out on tremendous benefits that we might have enjoyed.

Change is a difficult because we find, upon reflection, that we operate a large portion of our lives on auto-pilot. Our modern society often has us so stretched by external concerns that addressing our interior life takes a back seat. We find ourselves lacking the energy and the insight to shift our perspectives in ways leading to the kind of personal growth we want to achieve.

Is that how you really want to go through life?

So, challenge yourself this week to take the time for some self-reflection.  Focus on the changes you would really like to see in your life.  Develop the insight necessary to make them happen. If you start now, by the time the grass starts to green and the temperatures start to change for the warmer, you will be well on your way to changing too.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

Someone recently asked me what I thought some of the biggest challenges are to changing the planet. I think among the greatest challenges we face in changing the world (at least in the United States) is our federal government and the mainstream media.

Motives are always difficult to infer, but results can be analyzed. It has become clear to me is that there are people in powerful places who have a vested interest in keeping all of us divided, disempowered, and dependent upon them. The biggest tranquilizer they use to keep us frozen is fear.

Certainly, there are individuals in this world who seek to terrorize others, there is a global warming trend happening, and there is always the threat of a global pandemic. The problem is when “leaders” overstate the threat to keep people in a constant state of panic. As the peoples’ power weakens, the leaders’ power grows. It’s a simple formula and one you should consider before giving your power away in exchange for some promised benefit – health, security, or others.

bush.gif“Knowing these realities, America must not ignore the threat gathering against us. Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof — the smoking gun — that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.”
~ President George W. Bush, October 6, 2002 making the case for attacking Iraq

However, our friends in government and the media like to seize on these realities, magnify them immensely, and use them as a mechanism of control. This can only happen when people respond with irrational fear.

If we can train ourselves to take the next step and ask the next question; we can return reason, wisdom, and thoughtfulness to the discussion of these issues. We can determine just and sound courses of action.

“When we’ve finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are really hitting us and we’re in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have war crimes trials for these bastards — some sort of climate Nuremberg.”
~ David Roberts, Grist Magazine Staff Writer describing what ought to happen to people who deny global warming.

First, serious conversation about serious change cannot happen in an environment where this kind of incendiary rhetoric is the core level of the discussion. Whatever motives people have when they say these things, the net result is to discourage debate, disempower people to think or act for themselves, and force ill-considered solutions — that generally require more insitutional control of our lives.

No one in human history has ever been more empowered by giving their power and freedoms to government for safekeeping.

My own feeling is that, if we are to unite and change the world, we first have to empower ourselves by taking back control of our own thoughts. We must be more unwilling to be manipulated by the constant influx of fear-mongering that streams into our consciousness 24/7. We must be less willing to believe the fear merchants who sell us chicken little along with miracle pills and minivans.

This constant diet of fear warps our minds towards isolation and makes it impossible to evaluate real threats. It also creates dissention and dehumanizes other people, groups, and ideas by globalizing the threat represented by a few.

We can short-circuit their ability to control us by becoming strong, empowered individuals. This represents a first step towards uniting to change the world. Without that element, we are simply a large group of disempowered dependents clinging to each other in a world we do not believe we have the power to change.

The second thing we need is compassion. We have to understand that even after we “get it” not everyone else is going to right away. It is easy to become frustrated at the pace of change and give up. We have to allow others to wake up at their own pace. You cannot force these things and sometimes trying only makes it worse.

Here are a few practical ways to stop the fear merchants in their tracks and maintain the integrity of your own thoughts and common sense.

  1. There are at least two sides to every issue – find them research them and come to your own conclusions.
  2. Ask what the speaker has to gain by spreading the fear? What are his or her interests in having you believe there is a dire threat?
  3. Think for yourself. Make it a habit not to just believe something because everyone else believes it. This kind of herd mentality is a form of control and is the arch enemy of your ability to think for yourself.
  4. Take active steps to combat the fear with hope and positivity. Affirmations, meditation, prayer, or just a few quiet moments help you to calm your mind and replace the fear advertising with thoughts you want to think.
  5. Look at the past. Have those spreading the fear been right in the past? What is their track record of credibility?
  6. Know who you are and be who you are. A strong person who is certain of their own mind, their own goals, but willing to let other be the same is the most powerful agent for change there is.

If we are the master of our own thoughts, empowered, and compassionate, we can, indeed, change the world. We can be our own person and not get caught up in “The Matrix” being spun every day by our leaders in government and the media.

We the people are and must be the source of power in this world…not government, not media, and certainly not an unaudited commercial scientocracy.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!
