Articulating Your Goals and Dreams – The Affirmation Spot for Monday April 14, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

My dreams are the fuel that powers my life. Today I choose to follow them.

Can you articulate your goals and dreams? Are you making your goals and dreams concrete enough to bring them to fruition? Are you putting your intention for their realization out into the universe? This week we are going to look at some ways to bring your goals and dreams closer to reality.

Articulating Your Goals and Dreams

Words have such power. Most spiritual traditions around the world talk about God or the gods speaking the world into being.

From the beginning, words have been the source of creation. They are the first step in manifesting thoughts in our head out in the world. They are also the bridge between thoughts/ideas and actions.

It’s nearly impossible for your goals and dreams to become a reality, if you are unable to articulate them. The ability to clearly articulate your goals and dreams is the first step in clearly envisioning them.

You often hear successful people talk about their mission statements. These statements are nothing more than a formalized articulation of who they are as a person and an affirmation of their dreams and goals.

Articulating your goals or dreams need not be that formal. It can be as simple as a phrase that succinctly describes your goal. To begin, use some simple questions to get your thought process going.

“What is your dream?”
“What do you want to be doing in five years?”
“If you could be doing anything with your life what would it be?”

You’re not worried about “the how” at this point, only “the what”. “The how” takes care of itself once you clearly envision “the what”.

Here’s a simple 7-step process to begin articulating your dreams and goals.

  1. Ask yourself the preceding questions or similar questions you devise.
  2. Brainstorm answers by writing down everything that comes to your mind when you ask these questions. Listen carefully to really capture your true heart’s desires.
  3. When you’re happy with your list prioritize your answers.
  4. Select 1-3 key goals or dreams (that’s all most people can really focus on at any given time). These are the ones that really speak to you right now. Keep the rest for future use.
  5. Write a brief statement describing the goal or dream and your desire to achieve it. Add a timeframe to your statement. Spice it up with extra detail to motivate action.
  6. Memorize your statement.
  7. Articulate the statement regularly – out loud and to yourself. When someone asks you what you want to be doing answer with your statement. Use the statement as an affirmation for yourself. Share it with friends, relatives, and colleagues.

Following are a few examples to get you started:

Instead of saying:

“I want to be a published author.”

Say something like:

“In five years, I want to be sitting on a beach writing novels full time.”

Instead of saying:

“I want to be a football coach.”

Say something like:

“In five years, I want to be a successful college football coach at a divsion I school.”

Instead of saying:

“I want to a better mom.”

Say something like:

“In the next six months, I want to create more time with my kids and devise ways to be more engaged in their learning.”

The next post will discuss putting your intention for achieving your goal out into the universe.

multi.jpgLet’s face it. You live in a multi-tasking rich world. You juggle multiple projects at work or school. You have to get the kids to soccer practice and dance practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Tae Kwon Do on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Or is it the other way around? You care for your aging parents. You take the dog for a walk. You try to be a part of your community.

Somewhere in the middle of all of that you try to find time to better yourself and understand the meaning of this crazy world.

I understand. I live that life too. That is why I started The Affirmation Spot. I’ve written, recorded, and used audio affirmations for more than 15 years.  The reason I preferred audio affirmations over saying them or reading them is because I could listen to them wherever and whenever I wanted. With the advent of digital media that is more true than ever.

Over the years, I’ve found that passive listening is very effective. You’ve had the experience of hearing a song or a commercial many  times – without paying conscious attention – and suddenly one day you’re singing the song or saying the words to the commercial. That’s the result of passive listening. You have unconsciously learned it through repetition. That’s why advertisers run the same commercial on a radio station 20 times a day. That’s why they play Top 40 songs over and over. It’s to unconsciously put them into your head. Passive listening is powerful!

You can use your affirmations the same way. Put your headphones on and listen while you work or play them in the car on the way to Tae Kwon Do. You don’t have to really be listening to get the benefit. Your mind is absorbing them. Sometimes it’s even better than conscious listening because you’re not really questioning as much.

Pretty soon you’ll find yourself saying the positive words to an affirmation when a negative situation arises because, like the song, you have unconsciously absorbed it. Unlike the song, though, it brings real benefit to your life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

“None of us will ever accomplish anything excellent or commanding except when he listens to this whisper which is heard by him alone.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Just a reminder that you are a brilliant and capable person. Your gifts and your destiny are your own. Not one other person in the world has the mission you are here to complete. It is unique to you.

A powerful engine can be silenced by one tiny valve not performing its function. Though your role may seem tiny and inconsequential in the big scheme of things, the perfection of the entire universe awaits your contribution.

No writer, philosopher, or poet can whisper that purpose into your ear. No love, friend, or colleague can, by persuasion, convince you to pursue it. No politician, employer, or religious leader can empower you to achieve it.

Only you can listen to the voice. Only you can persuade you. Only you can empower you.

The only dilemma is will you or won’t you?

CALL Your Negative Thoughts – The Affirmation Spot for Monday March 17, 2008

woman_eyes_closed_sun_rs“Speak of the Devil and he appears,” goes the old aphorism. Some people in the positive thought movement seem to think the same thing about negative thoughts. They are something to be avoided at all costs. You must stamp them out like burning embers of a campfire to prevent their spread.

Obviously, the goal of positive thinking and affirmations is to diminish negative thoughts and counter them with positive thoughts. This is a worthy and highly beneficial goal that enahances your life.  Negative thoughts, however, are a natural part of being human. We all have them and we will always have them.

To panic and spend a lot of time concerning yourself with them, only causes them to blossom and grow. Recognizing them, accepting them, and letting them go steals their power and allows them to vanish back into the void from where they came. Having a negative thought is not the problem. Allowing them to become your habitual way of seeing things is what you want to avoid.

Actually, our negative thoughts provide a natural benefit. They spread light on the parts of us that need work and attention. If you always have negative thoughts about your job, maybe that part of your life needs some attention. If you have negative thoughts about certain people, those may be relationships that need work.

It’s rather entertaining sometimes to simply “thought watch”. Our minds are interesting things. When we relax, close your eyes, and watch your thoughts for a while you notice how impermanent thoughts are. They appear and create feelings. The disappear and the feelings disappear with them.

If your thoughts are very destructive and involve hurting yourself or others, get professonal help.
Here are four  things you can do to handle and live more harmoniously with common negative thoughts. They form the word CALL.
  1. Counter – counter your negative thoughts with tools like affirmations. Persistent negative thoughts can be countered and changed by offering a positive alternatives.
  2. Accept – accept that you will have negative thoughts and it’s OK. You’re human afterall. No beating yourself up.
  3. Listen – listen to your negative thoughts. They may provide insight into where you need to focus your self-improvement efforts.
  4. Laugh – some of your negative thoughts really are pretty funny when you get enough perspective. Lighten up and see the humor in the way your mind works.

I’m not saying don’t try to transform your negative thoughts into something positive. I’m just saying that when they want to come out and play, CALL allows you to say, “Bring it on!”

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!
