A New Posidigm for Our World – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday December 30, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

“My world is what I make of it and I choose to make it a just place to be. Your world is what you make of it and you choose to make it a just place to be.”
(click the affirmation to hear it in mp3)

bright_light_rodsI believe our world needs a new posidigm!

About 18 months ago I coined a new term. I’m reintroducing it because I’m hoping it will really catch on. I believe it’s a word that speaks to the direction our world needs to move.

The word posidigm combines the words positive and paradigm.

I searched for the term on all the major search engines and could not find a reference to it, so I just claimed it.

Dictionary.com provides the following definitions – among others – for these two words:

Positive“Emphasizing what is laudable, hopeful, or to the good; constructive: a positive attitude toward the future; positive things to say about a painting.”

Paradigm“A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.”

So, a posidigm can be defined as:

“Emphasizing a hopeful, good, or constructive set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitute your way of looking at reality.”

tank.gif How much of the negativity, war, and chaos in our world is created by our habitual, limiting paradigms – our “negadigms”?. We need a new posidigm!

Our planet and our species face real challenges in the coming decades and centuries. We have to face our challenges honestly, see through the chicanery of the fear peddlers, and build a new posidigm.

This new posidigm must admit its own blindspots and not see the world through unrealistically rose-colored glasses. Its power will come from this honesty and its more positive view of our future and potential as individuals and as a species.

As you might have gathered from this blog, I am a big believer in postive thinking. I know that if tomorrow six billion people on this planet demanded peace, justice, or freedom we would have it.

I’ve had a number of well-meaning and intelligent people tell me these things are not possible in this world. My response is always the same. “They are not possible as long as that is our attitude.”

hands.gifWork hard this week (and it is hard work) to stay positive about your path and about the world. Slowly but surely we can undo what is happening and bring this world to a better place.

This week when someone asks you how you are or what you are doing, tell them you are busy buidling a new posidigm. Brick by brick, thought by thought, action by action, it is coming into view.

Be peaceful Be prosperous!

A New Sun Is Rising – The Affirmation Spot for Monday December 22, 2008

apollo_sunriseToday’s entry is a multi-paragraph affirmation that captures the essence of a dream I had several years ago. May it inspire hope and remembrance in all who read it today. Remembrance that the world we live in is a choice not a prison sentence. We can have a world rooted in peace and driven by the potential extant in each of us, if that is world we expect and demand.

If we continue accept less, then that is the reality we will continue to experience.

This affirmation calls on us to expect more of ourselves, each other, and our leaders. It reminds us that a new and better day is right here ready for us to awaken to it. Some have. Some are. Some will. Some are fighting to hold on to the old world. Which are you?

The sun is rising; the clouds have passed away. And in the minds of at least a few, a greater consciousness has arisen. Tradition is no more. There is only awareness: an awareness of radiant possibilities and transcendent hopes for a world about to be born.

A world in which our fondest dreams shall come to pass. Where the greatest potentiality of humanity is realized: that each member of the human family will awaken to the inner light that opens one’s heart and frees one’s mind to look across culture, race, gender, religion and vast distance and see oneself.

Be of good cheer, o patient ones, for this new day dawns; a day of wonder and hope. A day, when filled with joy, all people shall attain their full potential. Long has been the night of toil and pain. Too long have brothers and sisters lived according to their fear of each other rather than their love for each other. But no more, the blinders have come off.

Finally and forever the Human Race will stand in the radiance of the truths that have lived within each of us all along. Truths that can no longer be ignored or distorted. The truth of our UNITY and our place in this planet’s web of life and in the greater cosmos beyond.

Be the inspiration you want to see in your world.

The Seeds We Plant – The Affirmation Spot for Friday October 3, 2008

My wife passed this story along to me yesterday. Thank you, April!

A very wise person once noted that you can count the seeds in an apple, but you cannot count the apples in a seed. The thoughts we think, the words we say, the actions we take; all plant the seeds of potential futures.

The thing is we never know when the seeds we plant are going to benefit or bite us. If we look at life this way, we will make every effort to plant positive seeds and not negative ones. It’s an opportunity for us to help the world even as we do something in our own self-interest.

The following story demonstrates how a seed planted with kindness can bear positive fruit many years later. Enjoy.

GLASS OF MILK

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.

He drank it so slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

The boy said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many year’s later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. Dr. Kelly returned to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly asked business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.

She feared to open it because she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.

She read these words –

“Paid in full with one glass of milk.”

Signed,

Dr. Howard Kelly.
Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: “Thank You, God, that Your love has spread broad through human hearts and hands.”

There’s a saying which goes something like this: Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time.  If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place – And, after all, isn’t that what life is all about?

Stay inspired!

Moving Mountains Beginning with Mole Hills – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday December 18, 2007

Today’s affirmation is:

It is not the mountain I conquer, but myself. I am reaching for the top of the mountain and my day in the sun is here.”

mountain.gifThere is a famous quote variously attributed to several people that says, “Whether or not you believe you can do a thing, you’re right.”  In the Book of Matthew, Jesus audaciously states, “Had you the faith of a mustard seed, you could command a mountain to be moved from here to there and it would be so.”

Both statements clearly to remind us that we have within us an astonishging capacity to do what would ordinarily be considered miraculous. In both instances, the fuel for the miracles is our belief.

I have often pondered this statement of Jesus and thought, “Ok, I believe it. I command the mountain to move.”  Immediately, even before I can get the words out, “common sense” enters my mind and says, “This is nonsense. The world does not work that way.”  Doubt has entered the picture. That’s why Jesus started his statement with, “Had you the faith…”

In Buddhism, doubt is one of the “five hindrances” to wisdom and considered the most difficult to overcome. We live in a society that teaches us that doubt and mistrust are prerequisites for our own self-protection. I wonder if the doubt spread by this world view is hindering us, individually and collectively, as we pursue our goals.

Although easier said than done, if we could suspend our disbelief just long enough to allow a firm belief in ourselves and our potential to take root and flourish; we could begin bringing the miraculous into our lives.

Maybe we start with things smaller than mountains like succeeding in our career, or strengthening our friendships and relationships, or simply achieving peace of mind.  Then perhaps we can tackle the mountain.  But then as Edmund Hilary stated, “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.”

How true!

Everyone have a great Thursday. Find a situation today to suspend your disbelief long enough to allow your miracle.

Be peaceful Be prosperous
