“Haters”

I was thinking yesterday about a term I hear proliferating these days. As is usually the case, it started with young people and now seems to be spreading to everyone. I hear it on TV, see it on social networks, and recently have heard it more and more in my daily life. The word is “hater”.

We often forget the power of words to shape our lives and our paradigms of the world. Subconsciously, we are all well-schooled in the real meaning of the word hate. When we use hate in this voguish, casual manner, it still carries that meaning.

The subconscious message is that if you disagree with me, you’re a hater. How are we conditioned in our society to deal with people who hate us? Well, of course, we hate them back. When I transform disagreement or even a matter of taste or choice into hate, I am creating a more divisive tone to my world. Remember that much of what you create in your mind, you see in your world. If I create this idea that I live in a world of “haters”, that is what I am going to experience. Living in that world separates me from other people and creates a “me vs. them” mentality.

You can see this mindset proliferating in the “reality TV” genre now so prevalent in our media culture. Ego-driven, finger-pointing, body bumping arguments with your “haters” may make good TV, but they create a paradigm that is awful for society. When people see this behavior repeatedly, they begin to see it as the norm. Our herd instinct causes us to begin modeling it in our lives, unless we are very conscious. This is an incredibly unproductive, unhealthy mindset, and comes with a lot of dis-ease and dysfunction. Words do have power.

Look, I’m a writer and I appreciate and support the free use of language and even trendy language to communicate. I just think we need to be careful of the images we create of the world with our words. They have real impact in shaping who we are and how we see the world.

What do you think?

Have a beautiful day. Stay inspired!

A New Posidigm for Our World – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday December 30, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

“My world is what I make of it and I choose to make it a just place to be. Your world is what you make of it and you choose to make it a just place to be.”
(click the affirmation to hear it in mp3)

bright_light_rodsI believe our world needs a new posidigm!

About 18 months ago I coined a new term. I’m reintroducing it because I’m hoping it will really catch on. I believe it’s a word that speaks to the direction our world needs to move.

The word posidigm combines the words positive and paradigm.

I searched for the term on all the major search engines and could not find a reference to it, so I just claimed it.

Dictionary.com provides the following definitions – among others – for these two words:

Positive“Emphasizing what is laudable, hopeful, or to the good; constructive: a positive attitude toward the future; positive things to say about a painting.”

Paradigm“A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.”

So, a posidigm can be defined as:

“Emphasizing a hopeful, good, or constructive set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitute your way of looking at reality.”

tank.gif How much of the negativity, war, and chaos in our world is created by our habitual, limiting paradigms – our “negadigms”?. We need a new posidigm!

Our planet and our species face real challenges in the coming decades and centuries. We have to face our challenges honestly, see through the chicanery of the fear peddlers, and build a new posidigm.

This new posidigm must admit its own blindspots and not see the world through unrealistically rose-colored glasses. Its power will come from this honesty and its more positive view of our future and potential as individuals and as a species.

As you might have gathered from this blog, I am a big believer in postive thinking. I know that if tomorrow six billion people on this planet demanded peace, justice, or freedom we would have it.

I’ve had a number of well-meaning and intelligent people tell me these things are not possible in this world. My response is always the same. “They are not possible as long as that is our attitude.”

hands.gifWork hard this week (and it is hard work) to stay positive about your path and about the world. Slowly but surely we can undo what is happening and bring this world to a better place.

This week when someone asks you how you are or what you are doing, tell them you are busy buidling a new posidigm. Brick by brick, thought by thought, action by action, it is coming into view.

Be peaceful Be prosperous!

Do You Have Your New Posidigm Yet? – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday January 10, 2008

seaturtle.gifCoining a new word or phrase is always an enjoyable mental exercise. I once coined the term hydrothermal-ambient-lucidity. It describes the clear, warm water environment gently stroked by sunlight that you discover  when you open your eyes under water in a warm tropical setting.

While meditating, I kept experiencing these visions of being under water in such an environment. I was immersed in unnamable shades of blue, that warm bath water feeling, and the muffled sounds of submergence.

Well, the term never caught on (you can Google it and see), but I can still feel the sensations and see the images that inspired the term 15 years later.

A few months ago I blogged about another new term I created. I’m hoping this one will really catch on.

dolphins.gif This word speaks to the positive direction I am moving in my life and would like to see the world move. The word is posidigm (positive + paradigm).

I searched for the term on all the major search engines and could not find a reference to it, so I just claimed it.

So, a posidigm can be defined as:

“emphasizing a hopeful, good, or constructive set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitute your way of looking at reality.
