Obama Nomination Fulfills American Dream – But Will He Live Up to Promised Change? – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday June 4, 2008

This morning all Americans can take pride in the fact that we have taken a step forward. The promise of the American political system has been, for the moment, realized.

With the apparent nomination of Democratic Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States, America has finally moved beyond a past filled with hypocrisy on such issues.

Change is a wonderful, positive thing. Promised, but unrealized, change can be very demoralizing. The American people (and the world) are eager for an American President to bring the former right now, but are understandably wary of more unfulfilled promises and false hopes.

So which kind of president would Barack Obama be?

He says the right things.

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

BARACK OBAMA, speech, Feb. 5, 2008

We are at an historic moment. For better or worse, Barack Obama stands at the center of that moment. What Barack Obama decides to do with his historic opportunity remains to be seen.

He swept through the primary season calling for change, change, and more change. Given the status quo on many topics, it’s not hard to see why people are clamoring for change.

Obama’s challenge is to demonstrate that his brand of change goes beyond WHO he is and translates to what he will DO. While his milestone victory is exciting, what he will do for this country is of much more lasting concern. Does he truly recognize the issues of the day and is he willing to transcend political orthodoxy to address them?

Among the questions Mr. Obama will have to answer:

  • Does he understand that Americans want energy options that empower them to make smarter energy choices for the environment? They do not want an environmental nanny state that monitors and taxes every out breath.
  • Does he understand that Americans want to work with our neighbors while maintaining the integrity of our borders?
  • Does  he understand that Americans are willing participants in a global economy, but that the benefits must flow both ways?
  • Does he truly understand the folly that has been U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and elsewhere or does he think he can just implement in a “smarter” way ala John Kerry in 2004?
  • Will he hold to his promise to use meaningful dialogue to resolve world issues or will he bullied by his advisors into “acting presidential” and continuing the easy use of the marines to solve all problems?
  • Does he plan to abruptly reverse The USA Patriot Act and other unconstitutional directions that the nation has been going or will he remain silent and allow them to continue?
  • Does he have a strategy for bringing monetary policy back into the control of the American people, our representatives, and The Constitution?
  • Will he give the American people a say in multinational agreements now in process that impact our lives? Will he implement a transparent process for these discussions?
  • Is there really any difference in electing him over John McCain? Is there really any difference between the two major parties or have they merged into a kind of two-headed establishment party?
  • In two years, will we be able to tell the difference between his policies and George W. Bush’s? Will they be making a positive difference in our lives?

These are REAL questions and the jury is clearly out on these and many more issues important to the American people.

The American people want a real change in direction and not just a change in the messenger. We want action not lip service on those changes. We want specifics not broad generalities.

The voters’ challenge, especially those who have helped create the Obama tsunami, is to test the level of change he truly represents. It is the American voters’ responsibility to demand substance and commitment to that change. “Better than McCain” is not an acceptable measure for our next leader. We have gone down that road before and we have found only disappointment.

Congratulations, Mr. Obama! Today you can take pride in your accomplishment and we in ours. Tomorrow the proving begins. Are you an agent for change or just the appearance of it? We are all looking forward to finding out.

Stay inspired!

Today, since this is a blog of positive and empowered thinking, I decided to find all the positives about China’s role in Tibet and post them in one place.

Here is the complete list:

No, I’m not using a white font. It’s a very short list. China (the regime not the people), go home! Fifty years of brutal occupation, repression, and social re-engineering to bolster your unwarranted claim on the Tibetan plateau must end. The fact that western governments and businesses are too indebted and dependent on you to call your policies what they are, is of no consequence.

His Holiness The Dalai Lama  Tibetan Children  Tiananmen Square Tank Stand Off

The Dalai Lama has more credibility in the hearts and minds of the people of this planet than your regime. That is why you have to resort to calling him names and spreading lies about him.

Dear, readers, who do you trust?

One of the Dalai Lama’s (Text of 1989 Nobel Peace Prize Speech) favorite quotes:

“As long as space remains,
as long as sentient beings remain,
may I too remain
and dispel the miseries of the world. “

The Chinese government’s actions in Tibet over the years:

Well, their actions speak for themselves. Religious and political repression, destruction of Tibetan culture, human rights violations, and a repopulation strategy designed to extinguish Tibetan identity. NICE!

The best measure of whether or not Tibet is part of China is the view of the Tibetan people. They don’t believe they are Chinese. I guess that settles it.

The Olympics are a great, global event. They embody sportsmanship, brotherhood, and peace. They are an opportunity for a nation to show itself in a favorable light. Another regime tried to polish its image when it hosted The Olympics in 1936.  The Olympics are a majestic and wonderful stage. However, they cannot hide the brutal face of an authoritarian regional hegemon oppressing its peaceful neighbor under the pretext of helping it.

Go home and let the Tibetan people have their culture. What a concept (President Bush, are you listening?) in a world where global powers attack others “for their own good.”

The Olympics have given China the world stage. And the world is watching.

Be peaceful Be prosperous Be positive!

A new study from Duke University finds the people with a positive outlook were half as likely to die of heart disease as those with a negative outlook. Doctors followed 2800 patients and found that positive thinkers had far better results even after the severity of the patient’s condition.

A Little Good News – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday November 1, 2007

Hello and welcome to November.

You might be old enough to remember the Anne Murray song entitled A Little Good News. Here are some of the lyrics. I’m sure you’ll agree with the sentiment.

I rolled out this morning
Kids had the mornin’ news show on
Bryant Gumbel was talkin’ ’bout the fighting in Lebanon
Some senator was squawkin’ ’bout the bad economy
It’s gonna get worse you see, we need a change in policyThere’s a local paper rolled up in a rubber band

One more sad story’s one more than I can stand
Just once how I’d like to see the headline say
“Not much to print today, can’t find nothin’ bad to say”, because

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD’ed, nobody burned a single buildin’ down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

I’ll come home this evenin’
I’ll bet that the news will be the same
Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane
How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care
Whoa, tell meNobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today
And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play

And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today

You know, there actually is a lot of good news in the world today. For some reason, our friends in the media don’t believe it sells. So we get a steady diet of rape, murder, abduction, war, and fear. If you are what you eat applies to the information we take in, we’re in sad shape.

We have to be careful, though, not to paint the media with too broad a brush. There are news sources out there, not the traditional ones, that are committed to finding and reporting the good that you might have suspected might be happening somewhere on planet earth.I wanted to share a few resources I’ve come across in case you need a reaffirmation that the world and its people have not all lost their minds.I really recommend these two magazines:

  • Ode Magazine – Ode is a news magazine along the lines of Time or News Week that focuses on positive happenings in the world and people solving problems.
  • Positive Thinking Magazine – PTM’s website About Us page states, “We are people like you—presumably—who believe that how we think about our lives pretty much affects how they turn out. That living a positive lifestyle is the best way to avoid living a negative one.

The following websites also focus on positive news stories and provide a great change of pace from the mainstream fear injections.

  • HeroicStories.com – This site publish true stories about ordinary people being heroic in everyday life.
  • Happy News.com – We’re obviously different from most news sites in that we’re looking for happy stories only. We’re a news supplement, or online magazine, if you will, that seeks to add to a newsreader’s experience. So we’re not going to be interested in some stories, including some very newsworthy ones. Our basic belief is not that people should be insulated from bad news. Far from it. We encourage people to be fully engaged, fully informed citizens. That means we need to know the good and the bad. We just believe much of the traditional media has strayed from this course, and reports a disproportionate amount of negative news. We are trying to balance the scales back out. Plus, let’s be honest, there are some days when we have just “had enough” and need a pick-me-up.
  • Good News Network.org – “Our mission,” reads their website, “is simple. Lots of people hunger for positive news in their lives and sense this need in society as well. The birth of positive news programming was inevitable in today’s media landscape and it will become a permanent fixture in the culture of the 21st century.”
  • Upbeat.net – Upbeat is dedicated to promoting the positive, optimistic, and inspiring good news stories in the world.”
  • Daryn Kagan.com – This website is run by CNN news anchor Daryn Kagan and focuses on presenting postive, hopeful stories.
  • Hope you are able to find a little good news today.

    Peace…
    Ray
