Anger is a Toxic Brain Chemical

Anger is a toxic brain chemical. Like toxic chemicals out in the world, it can have short-term explosive power that seems to propel you forward. It gives you an endorphin rush and makes you “feel good.” This is short-lived.

Eventually, it corrodes the mind, corrodes the heart, corrodes the very essence of your being. Whatever anger rules, it eventually destroys – a person, a nation, a world. We must decide, as conscious creators, if it’s an energy we wanted creating our world.

The scientific evidence for this beyond question. Anger literally destroys our health, if we allow it to persist and become our way of being. Like other addictive substances, it lies to us. It makes us think we’re doing something constructive and anger always craves more anger.

The Japanese research Masuru Emoto wrote a series of best-selling books back in the 1990s called Messages from Water. He demonstrated, despite some scientists claiming it was pseudo-science, that water has memory. When it forms into ice crystals after being exposed to emotion, it tends to become beautiful and symmetric from positive emotion and damaged and sick looking after exposure to negative energy.

Think about that! You are about 75 percent water. The planet’s surface is about 75 percent water. How damaging could all the negativity on the planet right now be?

You don’t need his experiment to prove this to yourself. How do you feel when you’ve let anger get the best of you? Often you feel like you “need a shower.”

We’ve seen a lot of anger in the world in the stressful moment of the past year. Some of the issues driving the anger a legitimate. However, we must ask ourselves. Can this toxic brain chemical produce the positive change we seek or will it just drag us, our nations, and civilization down into its black hole of destruction?

Anger is an alert system like fear. They are meant to let us know there is something in our environment we should be reacting to. However, neither is a solution or strategy. They always fail and destroy when used in that way.

Once our anger has alerted us to the need for change, it must be transformed into a productive energy, brain chemical that can actually bring positive and productive change. Anger alone will consume all in its path, beginning with the angry person.

Let love, let peace, let a positive vision for change rule you. They are the clean energy of emotions. They are the constructive means of achieving that which you hope to achieve.

Affirmations:

  • Anger destroys me until I let it go. Today I let it go.
  • I release my anger and transform it into a more productive energy.
  • I refuse to let anger destroy me or destroy my world.
  • I choose love over anger.
  • I choose peace over anger.
  • I choose positive change over angry reaction.

Just in case no one else has reminded you today, you are awesome!

Roses and Jasmine or Thorns?

Social Media is an amazing sphere for human connection. It allows people to share what’s going on in their lives with friends and family. It also gives us a constant and ready stream of things to be angry, fearful, and stressed about.

Those who have an interest in sewing anger, fear, and stress are well aware of that potential. As consumers of information, we must be too!

There’s only so much “the sky is falling” “evil is winning” “I’m being oppressed” you can expose yourself to before that BECOMES the sum of your conscious awareness every day.

We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” Well, you’re also what you repetitively think and focus your attention on.

We all know there are real challenges facing us individually and collectively now and in the future. That’s our lot as human beings. The challenges never end until we move on.

Our choice lies in how we process those challenges and what we choose to spend our daily awareness on.

The great Persian mystic Rumi wrote about this a thousand years ago and said it more poetically than I ever could.

“When you go to a garden, do you look at thorns or flowers? Spend more time with roses and jasmine.”

Facebook and other social media, traditional media, politics; they’re all filled with flowers and thorns.

Which do you go looking for? Which do you post and spread across this nexus of human awareness we call social media?

There are real threats that deserve to be taken seriously. These platforms are amazing for sharing information about them.

I guess what I’m suggesting is to be careful not to seed the field of your mind with constant and terrifying negativity. For what you plant the field of your consciousness, will grow and become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Roses and Jasmine or thorns? In the garden and on Facebook, the choice is ours.

Just in case no one else has reminded you today, YOU are awesome!

Beyond “Happy Thoughts” – The Affirmation Spot for Friday August 29, 2008

Today’s thought is:

“Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.”
~ Benjamin Disraeli

Many people equate positive thinking with naivete. Thinking “happy thoughts”, they point out, in the face of tragedy or difficulty is unrealistic.

There seems to be a defensiveness in that line of thinking. It renders as, “If I let my guard down enough to think ‘happy thoughts’ when things are tough, I’m going to get hurt. So, I’m going to steel myself against that possibility by thinking negative (um, realistic) thoughts.”

I can’t think of a better time to think “happy thoughts” than in the face of struggle. The challenge is whether or not you can. It’s not so easy to face down injustice, sadness, depression, and hatred with a sense of peace and a wise smile. It takes incredible strength and fortitude to do that and we, this blogger included, often fail miserably.

Negativity (um, realism) is like a powerful gravity well sucking us into its depths. We become caught up in negativity (um, realism) and we find ourselves getting more negative (um, realistic) by the moment. A “happy thought” is a very good thing at that moment. it changes the perspective. After all, the overwhelming majority of stresses we feel in our lives are rooted in our thinking. Maybe, just maybe, changing your thoughts changes the situation.

“Happy thoughts” are beneficial, but only a beginning. Empowered thinking is the ultimate goal. Empowered thinking changes the dynamic from throwing “happy thoughts” against a stressful world to actually feeling strong enough to act for change.

Three elements of Empowered Thinking

  1. Thought aspect – you have to think positively. Belief and commitment are important in any endeavor. Positive thinking is imperative to maximize those attributes. Positive thinking is the basis for empowered thinking, but empowered thinking is more than just positive thinking. It incorporates two more elements.
  2. Knowledge aspect – you have to be informed. In achievement pursuits, know what you are trying to achieve and be informed on what is going to be involved in succeeding. Knowing that ahead of time can help you prepare mentally for it. When empowering your thinking to critically evaluate information (such as in politics) you need to know as many of the facts as possible. Positive thinking and a lack of information do not allow you to take powerful action.
  3. Action aspect – empowered thinking is more than just thinking and knowing. Empowered thinking includes action. If you have incorporated the first two elements, your actions can be motivated and informed.

While “happy thoughts” may provide you a kind of protective shield; empowered thoughts help you break out of your shell and move forward towards a better you, a better life, and a better world.

Stay inspired!

Radical Happiness in a Negative World – The Affirmation Spot for Monday December 10, 2007

happiness.jpgToday’s affirmation is:

“Today I am making the radical choice to be absolutely happy.”

Being happy is a radical choice. It takes work and it requires strength to be happy in our world. The news is filled with the negative. There is a camera, it seems, ready to record every negative event happening on the planet.

Sometimes I think these broadcasts would be more accurately called “negs” rather than news.

Fox News likes to call itself “Fair and Balanced” because, it claims, it provides both sides (apparently meaning left and right) to a story. To me, fair and balanced news would include equal time for the positive and the depressing news.

Hey, there are really bad things and really bad people in this world. It would be naive to stick your head in the sand and not be informed.

The fact is, though, that the overwhelming majority of people on this planet get up, go to work, raise their kids, try to set aside a little bit for a rainy day, and try to get along with their fellow human beings.

This is true of Asians, North Americans, South Americans, Middle Easterners, Europeans, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, men, women, rich, and poor. It is true of the educated, the uneducated, techies, farmers, doctors, managers, ministers, secretaries, and, well, you get the idea.

All these people get up every day and want to be happy. Instead, their leaders and their information brokers work overtime to present them with a world filled with threat – people wanting to kill them, steal from them, cheat them, and rape them. In short, they work to create an ambient fear that makes happiness tough.

This atmosphere is the reason the affirmation says “the radical choice” to be happy. You, the individual, have to make a radical choice to distance yourself from the matrix of negativity and find a positive place within you to achieve happiness.

The good news is you are fully capable of doing just that. Look for the positive things in your day. Remind others of the positive things going on around them. Spend time each day in prayer, meditation, or using tools like affirmations to counter the prevailing current.

I don’t necessarily encourage you to turn off the negs unless it really causes you distress. To be a rock and a resource to others caught in the negative whirlpool, it’s helpful to know what is being discussed.

I would encourage you to find ways to counter those messages and check them against your own experience of life. Is the world really on fire all day long everywhere or is that an exaggeration?

Are there things happening everywhere all day long that redeem the character of your fellow human beings and demonstrate that the world is, in fact, a miraculous place full incredible opportunity for you?

My answer is yes, if we make the radical choice to recognize them and find happiness.

The choice is yours. Will you get radical today?

Be peaceful Be prosperous,

Ray
