Over the past several months, I’ve been conducting an Internet survey on how people use affirmations. My goal is eventually to use the research to write a book about affirmations.

I’ve been a little surprised by the results of the survey. Only 43% of people who use affirmations report that they are using some form of audio affirmation. Of those using audio affirmations, less than half are making use of mp3 affirmations. That means only 18% of affirmation users are taking advantage of the MP3 format.

The proliferation of iPods, MP3 players, and MP3-capable cell phones makes it easier than ever to take affirmations and positive thoughts with you wherever you go and use them whenever you want. The great part is that you don’t even have to have an MP3 player or iPod to take advantage of it.

But why audio affirmations and specifically MP3 affirmations?

9 Reasons MP3 Affirmations Rock!

  1. Play flexibility – as compared to other audio formats, MP3 affirmations are the most flexible. They can be played on an array devices – iPods, MP3 players, MP3-capable cell phones, MP3-capable PDAs, your computer, or even burned to a CD – while tapes and CDs are limited to devices capable of playing them.
  2. Select flexibility – MP3 affirmations are often available as individual tracks. This allows you to select only the specific affirmations you want rather than having to pay for affirmations you will never use.
  3. Save money – as compared with any other types of audio affirmations, MP3 downloads save money. They can often be purchased as individual downloads like a song from iTunes rather than as expensive packages.
  4. Mirror negative information – audio affirmations mirror the way you get most of your negative information (through sound). Audio affirmations directly counter the negative audio information that accumulates as you go through the day.
  5. Save time – audio affirmations – unlike read affirmations, visualization board affirmations, subliminal software, and spoken affirmations – do not require you to set aside time to use them. Your full concentration is not required. They are perfect for multi-tasking. I often listen to affirmations while I’m working, exercising, or doing other activities. In fact, I find this kind of passive listening some of the most beneficial. You absorb the affirmations the way you absorb words to a song you didn’t even know you were listening to it.
  6. Increase enjoyment – listening to affirmations can be very enjoyable. This is especially true when they are set to music. You can easily create an affirmation playlists on your MP3 player or your computer’s media player or mix the affirmations in with your regular music playlists for added motivation.
  7. Privacy – with headphones audio affirmations can be used virtually anywhere without anyone else knowing what you are doing. Again, other affirmations forms do not lend themselves to this kind of privacy. Books, websites, and computer screens can all give away what you are doing.
  8. Use anywhere – with the previously mentioned portable devices, your affirmations can go with you to be used exactly when and where you need them. Take your affirmations into the locker room before the big game. Listen to them on the way to the big sales call or even while you wait for your meeting. Listen to them when you’re relaxing in the hammock. Absorb your affirmations along with “the sun” while tanning. Anyplace your portable device goes, your affirmations can follow.
  9. Better for the Environment – MP3 downloads have one very specific advantage over their CD, DVD, and cassette tape counterparts. They are far more environmentally friendly. Read this article describing the impact digital media – their production and disposal – has on the environment. Downloadable MP3 affirmations are “the green way” to get your affirmations.

The MP3 revolution can make your affirmations more effective, easier to use, and less expensive. Are you taking advantage of it?

Be peaceful Be prosperous!

Forest Dreams: A Guided Meditation for Relaxation – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday February 12, 2008

Today’s Thought:

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
~ Lao-tzu

Years ago when I found myself in some very difficult personal circumstances, I used to record guided visualizations and meditations to help move my life in a positive direction. Today I am sharing an abridged version of one that always had a powerful impact. I recorded this one about 1993 and played it each night when I went to bed.My recommendation is to record it and play either at bed time or at a time when you can relax and focus for about 15 minutes. I am also going to be recording this and offering it on The Affirmation Spot.com in the near future.

woman_relaxing_zoom.jpgForest Dreams: A Guided Meditation for Relaxation and Confidence

Finding yourself in a comfortable position, you close your eyes and begin the process of relaxing and letting go. You are gently releasing the worries and stresses that have accumulated today. They are peacefully fading away, fading away, they are now so far away. You are entering a pleasant state of absolute serenity and bliss; coming to rest in that immovable center within. All within you and all outside of you lives in total harmony.

Take a deep breath…exhale…feeling yourself going deeper, deeper, deeper. Again take a deep breath…and exhale. Feel yourself releasing and relaxing…and letting go. Letting go is so easy for you at this moment. It is not about thinking or doing, but simply being. Allowing this moment to unfold as it will and be what it is.This is your time. Let it be a nourishing time; a time to receive positive energy. No effort and no strain. You are coming to a gentle stillness within and without.

You are becoming fully aware of this very moment. You watch it come, you watch it be, and you watch it pass. You accept it without judgments for exactly what it is; letting go of your tendency to want things to be different than they are. And as you allow the moment to be exactly what it is, you are allowing yourself to be exactly as you are.

You know for certain that you have the inner resources to face whatever comes your way.

Now visualize yourself sitting or lying in a grassy clearing in the middle of a great forest. You feel a gentle breeze blowing across your body. Above you the sky is blue and the sun is warm and comfortable on your skin. Off in the distance, you hear the sound of a stream slowly meandering its way through the forest.

The warmth of the sun is penetrating your skin and into your muscles and tendons and bones. As it does, a deeper level of peace and relaxation sweeps over you.

It is a beautiful day, a day of hope for the future; a day of limitless beginnings. For your life is like a garden, you must plant it and tend it before the harvest comes.  You must nurture the garden of your life as you go. Weeding it of old destructive patterns of thought and action.

Making sure it receives the love and care necessary for its growth and ultimately its blossoming.  As with any garden there must come times of sunshine and times of rain both of which must be if the garden is to succeed and flourish. And though it is easier to find joy in the sunshine than in the rain; if you stand in the rain willingly and understand its nature and necessity you will come find it even sweeter than the sunshine. For both are essential to growth.

The sunshine is the provider of life, doing its work over long hours, days, and weeks.  The rain is occasional, yet it is truly the source of rapid growth and advancement.  It does its part in short increments and brings newness to all it touches. Thus is balance maintained in a garden and in our lives.

Remembering this allows you to find peace in the heated moments of life and joy in darker days.  Now stand and look at your surroundings.  Feel, sense the wisdom to be found here in this beautiful forest.  Be aware of the gentle breeze that blows past you, around you, through you.  Witness the how light and dark play off each other in these woods just as they do in your life.

forest1.jpgHear the gentle whisper of the rustling leaves speaking to you the secrets of your life.  Now looking to the left you see a giant Redwood tree. Walk over, greet it, and embrace it as an old friend. Knowing that you are brothers on this earth, each a part of the other. Ponder the truth of your dependence on this tree and its dependence on you and, in fact, the interdependence of all of nature.

Fragile as a spider’s web and yet indestructible.  Feel your deep, sub-atomic connection with the entire environment and understand the trust that must be kept between you and it.

Experiencing this oneness of nature and yourself, commit yourself not to damage it, to take only what you need from it, and to put back what you can.  Feel this commitment gelling in your mind and now solidifying for all time.  Bear in mind that in every moment nature freely shares the bounty of its air, water, and food with you: how it literally sustains your life.  Be thankful and reverent toward it.
Accept the fact that change must occur in order for your life and all life to evolve. “We must often change,” said Confucius, ‘if we wish to be constant in happiness and wisdom.”

Life is an ever-evolving struggle between change and balance. Balance requires the flexibility to deal the incessant flux of life in our universe. One moment is joy and the next is pain. Your evolution requires that you accept both without over-indulging either. Our world is full of peril and opportunity and a little of each in the other.

Leaning against the giant redwood is a wooden staff.  It will be your guide on this great journey upon which you now embark.  It is a beautiful day in the forest. The sun is shining above and the stream gently rolls its way through this place.

Beyond the blue of the day sky lie the vast starfields of our universe and each seems to beckoning you on a path they well know, but you just now begin.  As you start down this path, you resolve to make the most of this opportunity to grow.

A shining path appears before you winding its way through these woods as far as you can see. Now as you start down the path, your staff in hand, you resolve in your heart to make the most of this opportunity to change and create a fresh start.

As you begin your trek through this ancient forest, a new confidence and optimism is entering your life. Your whole being turns to view things in new and positive ways. A deep sense of self-worth, self-esteem, and self confidence permeates your entire being.

Your self doubt has evaporated. These feelings are unstoppable. You love and respect yourself. You know you are capable of achieving anything!

arms_stretched.jpg You are facing your difficulties and challenges head-on and successfully overcoming them. You take concrete, measurable steps to handle the circumstances in your life. You are organized, efficient, and successful. You know that your purpose and universal purpose are one and that no obstacle can prevent you from achieving your goals.

Life is good! You focus on the good things that are happening because you benefit in every way by doing so. You are passionate about life. You embrace it and engage it at every opportunity. You know your potential is limitless and you are living up to it every day.

Your life is shifting in a positive direction. You are vigorously healthy. Your creative energies flow freely and they are opening new possibilities for you constantly. You are strong, steady, and capable. You find balance and joy everywhere you go. Abundance and happiness are your constant companions.

You are attracting the people and circumstances that work towards your highest good. Whatever you need is coming your way.

Your wisdom and discernment pierce outer appearances to reveal the true nature of things. This gives you a compassion for yourself and for the world.

You are growing. You are building. You are succeeding. You can do it!

As you listen to this recording day by day, the suggestions are becoming your mode of living and thinking. Every fiber of your being lives in accord with what I am telling you. And, I am telling you a wondrous healing is taking place in your life. Possibilities you never considered are flowing your way. You are prepared to take advantage of them.

You are prosperous. You are positive. You are free. You are transformed.

If this is your normal bed time, you will drift into a deep and restful sleep. Your dreams are coming true. If this is not your normal bed time, return to your day full of the peace, the wisdom, and the confidence gained from this experience.

Follow your bliss! Experience your bliss! Become your bliss!

25 Miscellaneous Affirmations – The Affirmation Spot for Friday January 25, 2008

First Person and Second Person Affirmations

athlete_hphones.jpgToday I am sharing 25 miscellaneous affirmations. Each follows the first person, second person formula. I’ve written before on the importance of using first and second person affirmations.

Many affirmation gurus suggest that all affirmations be written in the first person. First person affirmations are the most effective when reading, writing, or saying affirmations. Most people do not feel comfortable looking into a mirror and using “you” affirmations.woman_chair_hphones_rs.jpgHowever, audio affirmations open up a whole new realm. Listening is more passive than speaking or reading and you are used to hearing people speak to you in the second person.

My 20 years of experience with audio affirmations demonstrates that second-person affirmations are highly effective as audio affirmations. They offer “outside” confirmation of the first-person version of the affirmation.

For example, following “I am beautiful” with “You are beautiful” provides subconscious external confirmation of the first-person claim.

Tips

  • Commitment – keep in mind that the key to using affirmations – audio, written, or spoken – is commitment to your goal. Without a commitment to making the change or reaching your goal, affirmations are just words.
  • Repetition – repetition is the engine of affirmation success. For an affirmation to do its job in transforming your thoughts, it has to get at least equal time with the negative thoughts you want to replace.
  • How much/how often – speak, write, or listen to the first person affirmation 5-10 times and then repeat the second person affirmation the same number of times.  Do this at least twice each day. Stay with the affirmation(s) for at least 30 days. Use them again if the old thoughts return.
  • How to use first person affirmations – “Own” the first-person version. Speak or listen as if you are speaking passionately to yourself.
  • How to use second person affirmations – “Actively accept” the second person version. Speak or listen as if someone you respect is confirming your affirmation back to you.
  • How to know you’re getting results – there are several criteria for recognizing an affirmation’s success.
    • The old thought, behavior, or performance disappears or lessens.
    • Your mood, thinking, behavior, or performance change in a positive direction.
    • The old thought, behavior, or performance appears and your thinking immediately answers with the affirmation. This is really exciting. Your old thought is “I am stupid.” You think this thought and immediately it is answered by your affirmation, “I am highly intelligent.”

Here are 25 affirmations that will appear on the website in the near future. I tried to cover a number of topics.

Nothing Is Ever Lost – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday December 12, 2007

raybaseball75.jpg Today’s affirmation is:

“Today I am bringing the power of my past to the aid of my present.”

Nothing important is ever lost period. It may be out of sight and out of mind, but every person, thing, thought, or event that you have ever encountered continues to play a role in the thread that is your life.

I wrote the following poem back in 1993 at a time when I was wondering whether I had lost something of the magic of my childhood. As I wrote the poem, I realized that the power of that time was still right here within me. I only needed to reach out and touch it.

There is some time, some place, some person in your past that continues to have a tremendous influence on who you are and who you are becoming. I hope this poem will encourage you to reach out and touch the power that lives there for you.

“The Baseball Glove”

Worries gone from my mind
and sunshine up above;
clinging to my giant hand
my childhood baseball glove.

Its color is long-faded.
The pocket’s past worn out.
It takes me back to a time
before my self-styled doubt.

Back to days of make-believe
when I had not a care.
All day games of whiffle ball
and friendships that I shared.

As I think of long ago
and look, now, at this mitt
I’m caught up with the notion:
perhaps, it might still fit.

Be peaceful Be prosperous

Friday greetings,christmas_blue_ornament.jpg

We normally think of red and green as the traditional colors of the Christmas season. In our modern world, we can often add the color blue. Blue as in stressed, depressed, down, or burnt out. Even if Hanukkah is your holiday, you can do without this kind of blue.

Despite its uplifting and inspiring aspects, the holiday season seems to have a way of exasperating  normal stress levels in our lives. The season pushes normally even-keeled people to the brink and chronic stress sufferers to the breaking point.  I could probably write a week’s worth of posts on the things that create that situation, but today’s post focuses on ways to reduce your stress this holiday season.

Here are a few ideas for making this holiday season less stressful and more meaningful for you. Believe me, I am working right along with all of you on many of these.

  1. Be aware of your schedule – one way to reduce stress during the holidays is simply to know your schedule. Most of the year events are few and far enough between that we can handle them without a calendar. During the holidays, things can sneak up on you. Last minute events can create stress because they often involve finding a gift, cooking a dish, or both. This is avoided by simply knowing when and where you commitments are and planning for them ahead of time.
  2. Stay within your budget – giving is integral to the meaning of the holiday season. With all the marketing and the genuine impulse to give, spending beyond our means to get that perfect gift or enough gifts for loved ones can seem virtuous. There is nothing virtuous about setting yourself up for the January credit card crunch or December blues knowing that January is coming. Stay within your means and be honest with yourself and others. If you can’t afford to buy things, don’t. Consider giving your time to someone else to help them with a project or using your creative talents to make a gift. Most of your family and friends are not really desperate for more things anyway.
  3. Remember the real meaning of the season – I’m not here to tell you what that meaning ought to be for you. However, most of us agree that this time of the year has a significance that transcends the commercialism that permeates it. Get back in touch with what that meaning is for you and stay focused on it during the holidays. That concept is sure to be more peaceful and less stressful than the go, go, go…shop, shop, shop mentality.
  4. Prioritize your activities – you may not be able to fit every party or every activity into your holiday schedule. Rather than stressing out by trying to make room for every single event, prioritize and select.  Learn to graciously say, “thank you, but no thank you.” You’ll have more time for the most important people and activities.
  5. Focus on people not things – the holidays are a time to spend with people – family, friends, colleagues. The spiritual teacher Ram Dass used to say, “Be here now.” Work on being fully present with the people and enjoying that experience. When you are spending time with others forget about the “to do” list and all the other commitments. Just enjoy being here now.
  6. Be with other people – the holidays are particularly hard when you are down on your luck. Nothing is more stressful than being alone for the holidays. If you are in that position, make an extra effort to find ways to be around people and share the season.  You may not “feel like it” and may not believe you have anything to offer anyone else. If you can push past these two thoughts, you will experience more holiday happiness than you expect.
  7. Make time for you – this one is particularly for those of you always place the needs of others ahead of your own, but it applies to everyone. Make time for yourself during the holidays. Take a day and go shopping by yourself or for yourself. Make sure to schedule some time to read, write, scrapbook, work on the car, or whatever gives you personal joy. The feeling that you haven’t had any time to “just be” can be very strong during the holidays. The effect of that is often stress. Remember to be good to others by being good to yourself.
  8. Stay on track – use affirmations, prayer, meditation, and other practices and tecniques to stay on track with these other goals. Take a moment each day to see make sure you are monitoring your stress and keeping it under control.

A great affirmation for the holiday season is:

“I am committed to reducing my stress this holiday season. I am reducing stress this holiday season by gaining maximum enjoyment from my time with family and friends. I am reducing stress this holiday season by remembering and focusing on why this time of year is important to me.  I am reducing stress this holiday season by recognizing and addressing my own needs so that I have the energy to be there for others.”

No offense to Elvis, but you can do without the Blue Christmas this year. Try each of these ideas or just pick one and watch your stress go down and your enjoyment go up.

Peace…

Give The Gift of Positive This Holiday Season – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday December 5, 2007

Wednesday greetings,

world_in_hand.jpgToday I am going to shamlessly promote a series of affirmations that I am very proud of. The holidays are coming, why not give your friends, your family, and yourself the gift of positive?

I am pleased to announce that The Affirmation Spot’s My World affirmations, our most popular series, are now available as a single downloadable zip file.

This series includes 11 affirmations that inspire you to envision and choose a more positive world in many areas of your life. Each affirmation comes in three varieties which means you actually get 33 different affirmations.

These affirmations were designed to be used in tandem and to address multiple areas of your life.  These affirmations are a part of my personal daily routine. I have found them to be very effective at getting me pumped and ready to go for the day or a big event.

The three varieties are:

Exercise version – set to an inspring piece of music entitled To Fly With A Dream, this version of the affirmations are designed specifcally for times of activity such as during exercise. Listen while jogging, biking, lifting, or any other strenuous activity. This version are recorded a slightly higher volume to handle noisy situations.

Relaxation version – set to a beautiful guitar piece called Ponce’s Preludo in E Major, the relaxation version of the affirmations are designed for times of relaxation, meditation, or as background during work. Listen while meditating, relaxing, before bed, first thing in the morning, or at other times when you want to relax. This version is recorded at a slightly reduced volume for quiet times.

No music version – allows you to listen to the affirmations without music or add your own.

Best of all, you download the files once and you are then free to send them to as many people as you like. In fact, I want you to spread them around. Give them to clients, friends, or colleagues. Embed them in PowerPoint presentations or e-cards. Use them as a background for your website or blog. The possibilities are endless.

Downloading the entire series also saves you time and money by allowing you to download a single file while saving you 60% as compared with downloading all 33 affirmations individually. You can listen to the affirmations on computer, burn them to a CD, or play them on your MP3 player or iPod.

Thank you for the continued support and words of encouragement for The Affirmation Spot and what we are doing.  It is my sincere hope that you, your friends, and your family will find these affirmations a helpful tool for creating a fantastic 2008!
