Caching Out – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday January 14, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“Release stress…I am releasing all stressful thoughts and feelings from my life.”

sunrise7Did you know that when you look at the Sun you are not actually seeing the Sun as it is right now? Traveling at the speed of light, the Sun’s light takes about eight and a half minutes to reach the Earth. You are seeing the Sun as it existed eight and a half minutes ago.

You are seeing the Moon as it existed about 1.255 seconds ago. You see most of the stars in the night sky as they were decades, centuries, or millennia ago.

Sometimes we can think we are looking at what is when we are really looking at what was.

In your computer, there is a function known as caching that goes on constantly while you are using the computer.  This function saves into memory the last version of a visited web page. The benefit of caching information is that allows the computer to more rapidly access information than if it had to find it and load it all over again. This saves computer resources and time.

Your “mental software” functions in a similar way. You are constantly caching beliefs, feelings, and memories. You are constantly caching perceptions about people, things, and situations. Like the computer, this process allows you easily access information about your environment and saves valuable mindshare resources for other more pressing things. In other words, it is convenient not to have to rethink or reevaluate.

When a computer accesses a web page that has been cached in its memory it displays the version of the web page that was current when it was saved to memory. The browser may have to be refreshed to display changes made to the web page since it was cached.

When your mind “caches” things something similar happens. You may continue to see an old version of your reality and the people and things in it. Dogma forms and your perception becomes limited and inflexible. People never change and things never change. All new information is filtered to conform to your existing perceptions.

While convenient, this process denies the fact that people and things do change. A person who you categorized once as rude and obnoxious could have a profound change, but you would not recognize it because you see them through your cached view. A circumstance that once was very beneficial to you might have become toxic in your life, but you fail to recognize it because you are seeing it through a dated filter.

Worst of all, this process is nearly unconscious until you bring it to your conscious awareness. You have to remember to click refresh once in a while in your relationships and circumstances. Look with fresh eyes and see what is really there now.

Every moment in this universe is a totally unique and special event.  People are capable of change for good or bad.  You miss the diversity, opportunity, and potential when you use your cached files to view the world.

Click refresh right now.

India Goes to the Moon – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday October 22, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

“Determination…I push my limits and I achieve great things.” (click to hear it now)

Space represents such an opportunity for humanity. It is chance for us to work together on something important to all of us.

As The United States has largely rejected its space heritage in recent decades, other nations have stepped up in its place.

Today India took a major step forward in its space program by launching its first unmanned mission to the Moon. It joins its Asian counterparts Japan and China who already have craft orbiting our nearest celestial neighbor.

India’s craft dubbed Chandrayaan-1 – “Mooncraft” in ancient Sanskrit – lifted off today from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. The launch site is located on India’s southeast coastline near India’s largest city Chennai.

For longtime readers of this blog, you know I love space. It is my belief that space exploration poses challenges and offers economic opportunities that could fundamentally alter how humans interact on Earth.

It is my firm belief that the global war economy – sadly still far and away Earth’s largest industry – could easily be replaced by a global space economy. In fact, I would argue that economic reasons are the primary driver of wars on our planet. Our planet could be fundamentally improved by the substitution of space exploration for war.

Chandrayaan-1’s two-year mission is to provide the most detailed maps ever of Earth’s nearest neighbor and set the stage for landing an unmanned craft on the Moon’s surface by 2012.

Last October Japan successfully placed it’s Kaguya moon vehicle in orbit around the moon (view Earthrise and Earthset videos from Kaguya). The Japanese have set a goal of 2025 for placing a manned mission on the surface of the moon.

China’s Chang’e vehicle has also been orbiting the Moon for nearly a year now. Russia has announced plans to land on the Moon around 2025 and even NASA has announced plans to return by 2020.

This transition to a spacefaring race is a positive step. Just as human beings the world over took pride in the accomplishment of landing humans on the Moon July 20, 1969; everyone can take pride as other nations continue to push the envelope of exploration in our Solar System.

So it is in a spirit of common cause, common hopes, and common dreams that I congratulate India on its accomplishment today. May Chandrayaan-1 expand human knowledge about the Moon and bring closer the day when humans work together to travel the stars.

That’s one giant step for India and one giant leap for humans in space.

If you’re like me, you could probably use a little diversion about now. Summer is winding down and the political season is heating up. Today I thought I’d share some photos from somewhere many of us would love to be – Hawaii!

My wife and I have been fortunate enough to visit paradise each of the past two years. She is, in most cases, the photographer. Here are a few of the beautiful photos she has taken on those two trips.

Enjoy your few minutes away from the real world and Aloha!

Miracles II – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday August 6, 2008

This past Friday one of the rarest and most amazing astronomical events occurred. Total solar eclipses only happen once every few years anywhere in the world. In your lifetime, you’d be fortunate to see two in your area.

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun and covers all but the extreme outer edge of the Sun. These eclipses are a total coincidence of nature. The sun is almost exactly 400 times larger than the moon, but the moon is almost exactly 400 times closer to Earth than the Sun.

In the first 15 seconds of the video, you can see solar prominences extending out from the surface of the Sun. The video captures totality – when the Moon momentarily completely covers the Sun.

This creates the optical illusion that allows the Moon to appear to blot out the Sun. It is one of nature’s true miracles. We truly live on a remarkable planet in a remarkable universe. It’s source of absolute joy and peace to recall it.

Last week’s eclipse was seen only in Canada, The Arctic, Russia, Mongolia, and China. The following video was shot from Canada.

Enjoy this miracle and stay inspired!
