Show Respect in the Coming Debates over Sandy Hook Tragedy

The tribe says pick a side. The wise say been there done that.

In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, we are not all going to agree on the causes nor the solutions. One can already hear the war drums as the tribes begin to formulate proposals and turn up the rhetoric.

John F. Kennedy once said:

If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.

As we tackle these difficult questions, let us remain respectful.

There has been a lot of talk this week about reducing evil in the world. One way we can all contribute significantly is not to make those who disagree with us evil. Let us work for the best solutions for all and remember that the tone of our civil discourse is at least a contributor to our society’s issues. When we pick up an insult and hurl it or engage in personal attack we are taking a step down the road of the violence that plagues us.

We are better than that. Let us prove it in the coming debate.

Stay inspired!

6 Steps to A More Authentic You

Today’s Affirmation:

A new day dawns…I am a new person today; a better person, a healthier person, a happier person.

lao.gifToday’s thought comes from the ancient Chinese Book of Wisdom, The Tao Te Ching (pron. Dao De Jing) “The Book of the Way”. Little is known about its author, Lao-tzu, other than he was probably an older contemporary of Confucius.

“Tao” has many possible English translations among them would be “The Way”, “Ultimate Truth”, and “That which underlies all that is.”

“Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success or failure: which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never truly be fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the WHOLE WORLD belongs to you.

True perfection seems imperfect,
yet it is perfectly itself.
True fullness seems empty,
yet it is fully present.

True straightness seems crooked,
True wisdom seems foolish.
True art seems artless.

The Master allows things to happen.
She shapes events as they come.
She steps out of the way
and lets the Tao speak for itself.

Tao Te Ching Verses 44 & 45

The passage encourages us be authentically ourselves and truly follow the impulses of our hearts rather than the dictates of the herd. The problem is that after many years of living “by the appearances” we find ourselves unable to tell the difference.

How do you get back in touch with your authentic self? In my experience, I’ve found the following 6 steps effective.

  1. Quiet – quiet time is the first prerequisite to self-understanding. You need a space to be, to listen, and to ask. It is no accident that every spiritual traditon suggests quiet prayer or meditation.
  2. Question – once you establish a quiet space begin to question yourself. Think of yourself as a friend you are trying to help. Ask questions that prompt thought and help you assess your true needs and feelings.
  3. Listen – asking questions is not enough. You need to listen, really hear, the answers coming from within.
  4. Understand – follow up on your initial answers by probing deeper. Really seek to understand your needs and feelings.
  5. Act – when you truly understand your needs and your feelings and successfully block out the voices from the herd, you can take action. When that action is aligned with your underlying needs and feelings you are on your way to being authentically you.
  6. Allow – the passage also points out that there is wisdom in letting things happen as they do and accepting them as they are. This does not mean you give up on your dreams and goals or stop trying. The acceptance mindset is simply one that removes the pressure to be perfect.

Outside influences will always be there, but you need not sacrifice your sense of self for them. Things beyond our control are always going to happen. No amount of worry, no pill or technology science will ever invent can alter the circumstances of the human condition.

Nonetheless, being authentically yourself, accepting what is, and being at peace with all things helps you to weather life’s storms. It also helps you grow and flourish when the storm passes. You are back in the drivers seat in your life. The concern for appearances and the controls of the herd melt away. You are authentically you just as creation intended you to be all along.

Try, just today, to truly be YOU in every way and get out of the way so the universe can work its perfection.

Follow your bliss. Experience your bliss. Become your bliss.

Give The Gift of Positive This Holiday Season – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday December 5, 2007

Wednesday greetings,

world_in_hand.jpgToday I am going to shamlessly promote a series of affirmations that I am very proud of. The holidays are coming, why not give your friends, your family, and yourself the gift of positive?

I am pleased to announce that The Affirmation Spot’s My World affirmations, our most popular series, are now available as a single downloadable zip file.

This series includes 11 affirmations that inspire you to envision and choose a more positive world in many areas of your life. Each affirmation comes in three varieties which means you actually get 33 different affirmations.

These affirmations were designed to be used in tandem and to address multiple areas of your life.  These affirmations are a part of my personal daily routine. I have found them to be very effective at getting me pumped and ready to go for the day or a big event.

The three varieties are:

Exercise version – set to an inspring piece of music entitled To Fly With A Dream, this version of the affirmations are designed specifcally for times of activity such as during exercise. Listen while jogging, biking, lifting, or any other strenuous activity. This version are recorded a slightly higher volume to handle noisy situations.

Relaxation version – set to a beautiful guitar piece called Ponce’s Preludo in E Major, the relaxation version of the affirmations are designed for times of relaxation, meditation, or as background during work. Listen while meditating, relaxing, before bed, first thing in the morning, or at other times when you want to relax. This version is recorded at a slightly reduced volume for quiet times.

No music version – allows you to listen to the affirmations without music or add your own.

Best of all, you download the files once and you are then free to send them to as many people as you like. In fact, I want you to spread them around. Give them to clients, friends, or colleagues. Embed them in PowerPoint presentations or e-cards. Use them as a background for your website or blog. The possibilities are endless.

Downloading the entire series also saves you time and money by allowing you to download a single file while saving you 60% as compared with downloading all 33 affirmations individually. You can listen to the affirmations on computer, burn them to a CD, or play them on your MP3 player or iPod.

Thank you for the continued support and words of encouragement for The Affirmation Spot and what we are doing.  It is my sincere hope that you, your friends, and your family will find these affirmations a helpful tool for creating a fantastic 2008!

Finding Light in the Darkness – The Affirmation Spot for Monday November 12, 2007

Well, it’s happened again. We traded in that extra hour of sleep last Saturday night for earlier sunsets for the next several months. You know the routine. You look at the clock expecting it to read 8:00 because a look out the window reveals pitch blackness. Instead, the clock reports something crazy like 5:45.

I don’t know about you, but it honestly bums me out every year. It seems like piling on to take an hour of sunlight away during a part of the year when the days get shorter on their own by a few minutes each day. I’ll admit it. I love the sunshine and the light. I love long days and warm weather.

Medical science calls this Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It is a very real condition affecting many people this time of the year. Estimates range between 1.5 to 9 percent of the American population that suffers full-blown SAD. Perhaps as many as an additional 14% experience a milder, but still clinical condition. Most of us just feel a little blue because our months of outdoor activities are limited by the cold and the dark.

The question is how do we combat these effects and keep our outlook positive? Obviously, people with a serious issue want to seek medical advice, but the rest of us can do a number of non-medical things to get us through the dim, murky depths of the Autumn and Winter seasons.

  1. Light therapy – Scientists have discovered that many people have a physical reaction to light deprevation. This can be addressed by something called light therapy. Light therapy involves sitting or lying near a bright light for 30-60 minutes per day.  The therapy is most effective when you sit or lie within 15 to 30 cm of the light.  The light must be much brighter than ordinary lighting on the order of 2500 to 10,000 lux (wikipedia). Some results can be expected within a week, but it usually takes several weeks to see maximum results from this treatment.
  2. Internal journey – In mythology, night, darkness, and winter all often symbolize death. This death is not necessarily literal, but metaphorical. The reference is to dying to the external. These concepts are often tied to the internal journey (i.e. going within) as opposed to looking without. We are a very outward looking culture. We draw our social cues, entertainment, and much of our self-understanding from outside. This is not and has not been true of all cultures through time. Be it prayer, meditation, or quiet sitting; the willingness to shut out all the distractions and noise for some period each day can yield tremendous benefits. Try taking advantage of the longer nights and reduced activity to explore within. You are likely to find your dreams, your motivations, and few ghosts awaiting your introspection. Make an adventure out of it. You might emerge in the light and warmth of Spring as a new person.
  3. Positive thinking – Affirmations and other positive thinking tools become doubly important. Keep your spirits high and thoughts realistic, but forward looking. Regular use of affirmations or other positive thinking tools can help even out the mental valleys and mountains experienced this time of the year.
  4. Positive change – For those of you into gardening, you know all about planting bulbs in the ground this time of the year. You plant a dormant bulb in the Fall. The bulb spends the winter transforming and emerges in the Spring as something beautiful. Think of yourself as a bulb. Plant who you are today and then work all winter on changes you’ve been wanting to make in your life. Build a plan complete with goals and actions to get you there. By Spring, you will emerge as something new and amazing.
  5. Hobbies – Throw yourself into a hobby. All summer long you were wishing for a free weekend to get to some indoor activity you really enjoy. Now is the time. Don’t procrastinate! Your hobby keeps your mind focused and engaged and passes the long dark hours until Spring.

The bottom line is that there is no reason to be SAD this time of year. There are steps and techniques to deal with the psychological effects of this time of year. Who knows, you might even reach a place where you actually look forward to setting back the clock.

Have a peaceful and productive Monday!

Letting Go Tips – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday October 17, 2007

woman_eyes_closed_sun_rs.jpgToday’s affirmation is:

“I hold on to those ideas, things, and circumstances that serve my growth and freely release those that no longer do.”

Letting go is something many people have a difficult time doing. As human beings, it is natural that we grow attached to the ideas, things, and circumstances that have added value to our lives. We get used to the way things are and, at times, will go to any extent to keep them that way. This is simply loyalty until it becomes destructive to our well-being.

The ability to let go and move on is a key factor for success in life. Successful people recognize when a situation has yielded all the benefit possible (or enough punishment) and they willingly accept the next challenge.

Many situations begin in our lives as fertile rivers that nourish us and help us grow. However, when we hold on longer than we should we wake up one morning laying in a proverbial dry river bed and wondering what in the world happened.

Now, I’m not advocating a bottom-line cost-benefit approach to life, where you dump your spouse because you “don’t feel it” today or change jobs every six months. Commitment is an important characteristic of successful people as well.

I’m advocating a wise, well-considered approach that honestly aligns with your deepest needs and intentions. Those are not fickle, flavor-of-the-day feelings, but they do change periodically.

One stumbling block encountered when trying to let something go is the fact that it is a mostly mental process. One way to put an exclamation point on the release is to do something physical to represent the release.

Not every situation needs this much attention, but situations where you are really having a hard time letting go; try the following.

Write the situation you are trying to release on a piece of paper. Be specific. Use names, dates, and descriptions. At the end of the note, write, “Today I am releasing you.”

Here are three ways to solidify your release of the issue.

1. Take your note and tear it into small pieces. Feed the pieces – one at at time -into a fire until it is gone. As you feed each piece into the fire, say to yourself, “I release you.”

2. Get a balloon and stuff your note inside. Fill the balloon with helium and release it. As the balloon sails up and away, say to yourself, “I release you.” The balloon gets smaller and smaller until it is gone. Visualize your attachment to the situation getting smaller and smaller until it is gone.

3. If there are very strong feelings associated with the situation, try this technique. Put your note in an empty aluminum can. Set the can in your drive way and roll over it with your car until it smashed flat. Each time you roll over the can say to yourself, “I’m done with this situation.” When you have crushed the can flat throw it a way and “be done with it.”

These techniques are helpful for situations involving strong emotional attachments. Not every situation requires such an extreme measure, but we do need to maintenance our lives occasionally to make sure we are surrounding ourselves with the people, things, and circumstances that benefit us and the people we care about.

Have an exceptional Wednesday.

Peace…

Ray
