Freedom Vs. Control

Electrons revolve around the brain. Concept of idea.Every time you give your power to decide your path or to be who you are away, you are disempowered.

Freedom struggles in the face of controlling paradigms because many lack a strong enough impulse to be autonomous.

It is as though much or our species lives in a traumatized state that seeks someone to fill in the blanks for us. Religion, government and other institutions have successfully stepped into the void for thousands of years to fill for us.

In our time modern times, mass media has ushered in an era of control through “cool”. People have learned that they are empowered by being like someone else, rather than finding the unique qualities and purposes that make them who they are.

It is not a cult of the like-minded and conditioned by centralized authority that leads to the Nirvana we seek. Some see this centralized control – often through government – as the only means for solving a nation’s or the planet’s problems. But I believe, it is a planet filled with autonomous, self-empowered individuals that choose to work together for the common good.

The former is our weak-minded, easy-way-out attempt to reach the same end. The latter must be our goal.

That is not to say we can operate in a selfish bubble. Nothing we do is without links and impacts on everything and everyone around us. A free empowered individual is one who creates bonds of choice and mutual benefit rather than being forced.

I think it is an innate mistrust in humanity driven by constant examples of reasons to doubt the motivations of those around us and our secret feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty that drive us to concede our potential to some outside authority that “knows better”.

The challenges are many in going from where we are now this state of empowered autonomy linked to a commitment to the common interest. There is probably not even agreement on what that human being looks like and some will deny it’s even possible. Some would surely use their increased empowerment for destructive ends, like a teenager experiencing the first taste of freedom. We shall not have that answer until we set its attainment as our priority. None of these can be a reason not begin down this enlightened road.

The how is uncertain and this is what frightens the powers that be on the planet. Because they have interests to protect. They have come to value order over any other virtue.

How can you begin? You can begin each and every day by being aware of who and how you give your power away. You can strive to use the power you do have judiciously, positively towards your interests, but not selfishly or abusively against others. You can mentor those in your sphere of influence to do the same.

You can begin to see that institutions are there to serve our needs and not the other way around. Understand that their authority and relevancy comes from the people they serve. You can pull yourself in the direction of freedom and autonomy one decision at at time, until any other approach seems foreign to you.

Follow your bliss. Experience your bliss. Become your bliss.

17 Quotes About the Future

Today’s Affirmation:
The past is the past! My direction is forward, not back!

The astronautWe humans often have such pessimism about the future and about ourselves. That pessimism chains us to old nightmares that keep repeating. We mourn at sunsets and feel helpless to change the momentum of our individual and collective existence.

But, what if we chose to see sunset as beginnings rather than endings? What if we chose to walk away from certainty that chains us to the past and trade it for the uncertainty where possibility and potential live?

Today I am posting 17 quotes focused on helping you to positively focus on the future. While you cannot underestimate the importance of living fully in the now, I believe it is important to create a positive expectation for the future. See new horizons for yourself and for humanity. Too often, our popular media portrays a dark and dangerous future. This probably mirrors the human mental default setting.

It takes work to overcome that and see a bright and positive future. However, we must if we are to live in that future. The future is always a mystery, but never an accident. I hope these quotes will help you prepare for and paint a colorful and empowering future. I am certain you will find at least one quote, if not several, that fire your visions for peaceful, positive, and productive future.

  1. “I’m choosing happiness over suffering, I know I am. I’m making space for the unknown future to fill up my life with yet-to-come surprises.”~ Elizabeth Gilbert

  3. “The best way to predict the future is to event it.”~ Alan Kay
  4. “The minute you alter your perception of yourself and your future, both you and your future begin to change.”~ Marilee Zdenek
  5. “And when the future hinges on the next words that are said, don’t let logic interfere. Believe in your heart instead.”~ Philip Robison
  6. “You keep unconsciously becoming your past, until you consciously choose to become your new future.”~ Ray Davis
  7. “He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future.”~ George Orwell
  8. “The future belongs to the risk-takers, not the comfort-seekers.”~ Brian Tracy
  9. “We can become inspired to shape a higher, more ideal future, and when we do, miracles happen.”~ James Redfield
  10. “The future starts today, not tomorrow.”~ Pope John Paul II
  11. “The visions we offer our children shape the future. It matters what those visions are. Often they become self-fulfilling prophecies. Dreams are maps.”~ Carl Sagan
  12. “Take comfort in the future. We worry about what will become of us. Our lives are chaotic like a wave rushing to shore. But every single drop of water in that wave winds up precisely where it belongs, and so do we.”~ Ray Davis
  13. “The past is always tense, the future perfect.”~ Zadie Smith
  14. “You can build the future out of anything. A scrap, a flicker. The desire to go forward, slowly, one foot at a time.”~ Lauren Oliver
  15. “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith.”~ Franklin D. Roosevelt
  16. “Let go of the past and go for the future. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you imagined.”~ Henry David Thoreau
  17. “Your future is only as bright as your mind is open.”~ Rich Wilkins

We are capable of amazing futures, even as we tend to the present. Those futures are born in individual minds and the collective mind, and must be, if we are see them manifest in our world.

Your Belief Inventory – The Affirmation Spot for Monday January 12, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“This year I am absolutely committed to being the person I came here to be.”
(This is the official TAS affirmation for 2009. Click the affirmation to hear the mp3 version)

yesterdayWhat you believe about you, your life, and the world impacts your experience of them. Your beliefs inform your thoughts and your thoughts generate your actions. And, of course, your actions create the world where you live. It’s very important to be aware of your beliefs.

Are your current beliefs fully conscious to you? Or, is your self-perception stuck in yesterday? Do you know what you believe today? Of course, the quick answer is “yes”. Do you really?

Just as a once- thriving river bed slowly dries up and changes course your beliefs can subtly shift over time almost without your knowledge. You don’t notice it day to day, but over years the change can be dramatic.

Life is an ever-changing adventure, but sometimes your self-perception and the perception of others does not keep up with who you are today.

You and the people around you may have an outdated idea of who you are.

Have you had the experience of really advancing in your professional or personal life only to have your family not recognize the change? You go home for the holidays and your mother still sees you and treats you like you’re 13. It can be very frustrating when others fail to recognize the strides and leaps you have made in life. Their perception of you can become locked in time.

When I was 25 I became seriously ill and spent several weeks in the hospital. One of the best internists in the city took my case. He became my personal physician for several years. He was a gifted and talented doctor, but he never let go of his vision of me as that sick person lying in a hospital bed. Finally, I had to move on and find a new doctor. His belief about who I was didn’t keep up with reality.

While frustrating when other people do this to you, you often do it to yourself. Has your perception of who you are kept up with the reality?

Here is an idea to help you get in touch with who you are today. Complete a Belief Inventory.

Take each of the following dimensions of your life (feel free to add your own) and write a brief description of your belief on that area of your life.

Don’t jump the gun. Give it some real thought. Really capture your true beliefs on each of these topics.

Belief Inventory

  • Personality
  • Relationships
  • Career
  • Body image
  • Future
  • Spiritual life
  • Life
  • Politics

Here’s the punchline. Now that you better understand where you really stand on these aspects of your life you can map a strategy for self-development based on where you really are instead of where you thought you were.

If you’re really bold, share it with family and friends and have them complete one on you. The feedback could be interesting and you will get a sense of who they think you are.

Have fun with your Belief Inventory and I’d love to hear how it comes out.

Stay inspired!

Those Magic Moments – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday October 24, 2007

 Today’s affirmation:

“I know what achieving my goal feels like. I know what it smells like and tastes like. I know what achieving my goal looks like and sounds like. I envision my life with my goal attained.”

Some of you are probably familiar with that old Drifters song This Magic Moment. If you are, you know it is one of those songs that starts you humming and probably gets stuck in your head all day.

Life is about Those Magic Moments. We move through the “average days” in our life longing for another Magic Moment, or, in many cases, really just to relive previous Magic Moments.

As is often the case, sports, this week, has provided a lesson on the chalkboard of life. This week two traditionally successful teams have taken opposite approaches to rekindling Those Magic Moments.

In the history of college football, only three teams have a higher winning percentage than the Nebraska Cornhuskers. During the mid 1990s, the Huskers finally overcame their long-time nemeses University of Miami, FL and Florida State to become college football’s premiere program.

Legendary coach Tom Osborne finished his career with three national championships in four years capping the most illustrious stretch in the history of an illustrious program.

People in Nebraska got used to Those Magic Moments. They almost felt entitled to them. When Osborne retired, Nebraska hired long-time assistant to the legend, Frank Solich. Solich only went 61-19 in six years as head coach – not good enough. There were no more national championships -no more Magic Moments.

He was fired in favor of NFL coach Bill Callahan. Callahan, now in his fifth year, has compiled a 26-21 record. Those Magic Moments feel further away than ever for Nebraska fans.

This week, in the midst of a particularly devastating losing streak, Nebraska fired its Athletic Director and hired the legendary Osborne as interim Athletic Director.

The New York Yankees are far and away the most successful team in the history of major league baseball. However, the team had fallen on a decade of hard times. In 1996, the team hired Joe Torre as its manager.

Torre led the Yankees to four world championships in five years between 1996 and 2001. In the years since, the Yankees have had baseball’s best record, but no more World Series wins. Owner George Steinbrenner and many in the Yankee nation grew impatient with not winning a World Series every other year.

This week the Yankees offered Torre a contract the team knew he would not accept effectively forcing him out. The team believes it can recapture Those Magic Moments with a new manager.

These two teams are following two strategies we often pursue when we are searching for Those Magic Moments. Nebraska looked backwards to past glory. The hope is that Tom Osborne, through his mere presence, can bring the Magic back.

The Yankees chose to look to the future in the hope that “new blood” might transform success into perfection.

We, too, are always looking for Our Magic Moments. We look forward and we look back. We try to relive the past or we try to change everything in the hope that change itself will bring us the happiness we want.

The truth is that our happiness is hidden in the most conspicuous, but unlikely place….NOW.

The past is the past. When we try to recreate the past the best we can hope for is a meaningless replication. We don’t live there anymore. We live here and now. What worked in the past may not work today. Can Tom Osborne really return the Nebraska football program to 1997?

When we change everything hoping to come up with something better, we usually wind up with a rootless life that does not live up to our expectations. Will the new Yankee manager be able top Torre’s 95+ win per year average and win enough World Series’ to keep George and the Yankee faithful satisfied?

The past is our teacher. The future is our dream. Neither provides a foothold for us to climb and build and grow. The only foothold on the entire mountain of life is right now.

Now may not seem like Magic. It may not be all we want it to be, but it is really the only clay from which we can sculpt the rest of our lives.

Afterall no Magic Moment that ever was or ever will be is inherently Magic. What makes Moments Magic is not the moment. It is us. It is us being fully who we are in that moment, dealing with its realities, and making the most of them.

We already soaked all the Magic there was from yesterday. We cannot begin drawing on tomorrow’s Magic. Let’s stay focused on finding all the Magic that exists today and be content with it.

Peace…

Ray
