5 Ingredients for Success – The Affirmation Spot for Monday August 18, 2008

Watching the Olympics really highlights the narrow margin between greatness and near greatness when it comes to sports and life. But for a 1/100th of a second here or an extra step there, the winners and the almosts would be quite different. The message is that the margin of victory is small, but opportunities for success are many.

As I pointed out in one recent post, I really believe we are in a race of one. The world may appoint one person the “winner” and someone else the “loser”; but we really are in a pursuit of own highest potential. Winners and losers are an administrative detail.

Someone who works hard for years towards a goal is not a loser by any measure. They may not be labeled winner or victor, but they are an unqualified success.

There are many, many things that contribute to success. However, they can be broken down into five key ingredients that repeatedly create success.

  1. Talent – talent in a particular endeavor really is a baseline for success in that field. That’s not to say that you cannot derive satisfaction and happiness from painting even though you’ll never be Monet. You most certainly can! However, if your goal is success in a pursuit, it’s best to start with where your talent lies. Talent can be natural or developed.
  2. Motivation – all the talent in the world is nowhere without the motivation to develop it and advance it to a superior level. Motivation is a lot about excelling the talent and being willing to do the hard work. It’s also the mental part of the equation. Motivation is all about your thinking.
  3. Hard work – even in the age of electronic communication, social networking, and global media there is still no substitute for hard work. Success comes to talented, motivated, hard workers.
  4. A little help from your friends – it’s easy to see how this works in a team sport. A football team cannot win without a quarterback, offensive tackles, linebackers, punters, etc. Really, though, most high-level endeavors in life are a team effort. These Olympians we see winning medals have coaches, massage therapists, sponsors, and others that make it possible for them stand on that platform.
  5. Luck – there may be five really great sales professionals in a company, but only one is the top. Two great teams meet in The World Series every year, but only one great team becomes world champion. Sometimes you can have other four factors and it comes down to the way a ball bounces. Luck can be the deciding factor between individuals or teams that have done the other four. However, luck is overrated by many people who see all success as luck. It rarely is. Many people give up when luck goes against them. The key is to start right back with the motivation and start the process again. You were not the top sales person this time, but you can be next time. You can lose the Super Bowl by inches, but start again at training camp with the goal to get there again.

Affirmations: Repetition and Belief Part II – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday August 5, 2008

In the previous post, I discussed the importance of repetition with affirmations in changing thoughts at the subconscious level. Over time, this repetition helps change the subconscious environment and that lays the groundwork for the belief that is necessary for affirmations to succeed. Today I am discussing belief.

Let me qualify what I mean by belief. Belief is not the fervor with which you say affirmations or listen to them. It’s not about “believing in the affirmations”.

When I talk about belief and affirmations I am talking about the belief in the accomplishment, goal, or dream you are pursuing. I am talking about a commitment and a plan of action to coincide with the use of the affirmations. The belief, the willingness to believe, or at least the desire to “go for it” must already be present in you.

This is going to shake some people up. Affirmations are not tools of persuasion. Let me say that again. Affirmations are not tools of persuasion.

The common thinking about affirmations is that if you hammer a phrase into your mind long enough and hard enough, that process will magically make you believe it. There is a grain of truth in this idea as it relates to the repetition side of the house, but if belief is lacking, the affirmations cannot succeed.

There are many people – including many coaches and mental health professionals with M.A. and PhD after their names – who mistakenly think affirmations are tools of persuasion. Often these professionals evaluate affirmations harshly because they fail to produce the desired results. These criticisms usually center on the issue of cognitive dissonance – the natural resistance in our minds to statements that we don’t believe to be true.

The argument follows this line of reasoning.

Patient A had self-esteem issues. We tried affirmations as a way of correcting the self-esteem. However, the affirmations failed because patient A was not able to make the leap from the current state to the desired state represented by the affirmations. Therefore, affirmations don’t work because they place unrealistic demands on the patient’s ability to believe in the outcome.

Precisely. Affirmations are not tools of persuasion. They do not create belief. They magnify and expand belief or desire to align thinking with actions in a person determined to achieve a goal. That belief/determination/desire foundation must be created, when necessary, by counseling, coaching, or other means. Saying or listening to affirmations without this belief component – without commitment to achieving something – is nothing more than wishful thinking.

You are always going to encounter cognitive dissonance when using affirmations – especially in extreme cases where the desired change is great – if the patient or client is not properly prepared. If the person has not committed to the change, agreed that the change is something he or she is willing to attempt, affirmations will not help. When someone is not committed to achieving a goal, affirmations are literally empty words.

I’ve seen parents use affirmations with their kids in sports and other activities. They give affirmations to the kid to improve performance. Affirmations can absolutely help improve performance, if the child wants to improve.

Affirmations can help the child become a better baseball player, but they cannot help the child want to be a baseball player in the first place. The desire to be a baseball player and to improve must be present before affirmations can change the situation.

For affirmations to be successful, there must be a determination on the part of the person using the affirmations to push toward the goal. Then, and only then, can the change in thoughts created by affirmations help create the mental environment that allows the action plan to have the best chance for success.

So what is the net net of this article? Belief, commitment, desire, or all of them must be present for affirmations to succeed. Affirmations do not get you to the goal in a vacuum. They create the positive thought environment that prepares you for success, causes you to expect it, and helps you stay focused and motivated when obstacles arise.

When you have your thoughts and your actions moving positively in the same direction you are a force to be reckoned with. Affirmations – through repetition and belief – will empower your thoughts to support your powerful action in the world.

From Ray’s Desk…

Hello, TAS friends

The past month has witnessed two major natural disasters in Asia. It’s an odd conundrum that the worst events bring out the best in the human spirit. People and nations around the world are mobilizing to help the people of Myanmar and China.

I think the reason these tragic events stir us so and bring out our best is that they remind us that we really are all in this together. We may differ politically, religiously, or economically. On ordinary days, those issues seem to matter so much.

However, when faced with unimaginable destruction and suffering, we seem to instinctively pull together. Maybe, in those moments, we are jolted awake to the fact that behind all our egoic masks and facades we are all subject to the same unpredictable whims of existence.

Such events can drive us to depression and withdrawal or engagement and enlightenment. They can create the thought that life is short and meaningless or that life is short and oh so precious.

There are circumstances beyond our control, but our thoughts and actions are always within our control.  When we realize that simple fact we are empowered and energized to pick up and move on from tragedy in our lives and in the world.

The Affirmation Spot Partners with Feed The Children

There are so many children who suffer on this planet every day. Sometimes it is the result of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the recent typhoon in Myanmar, or the Chinese earthquake. In other places, it is due to war, poverty, and other political conditions.

Founded in 1979, Feed The Children now has a presence in all 50 U.S. states and in more than 60 countries around the world. FTC delivers water and beverages, food, medicine, clothing, and much more – the necessities of life – to children and their families in distress.

The primary objective of The Affirmation Spot is to help people. The affirmations and other digital products we offer focus on improving the mental and spiritual aspects of our being. However, we cannot overlook the real, material needs of people.

That is why I am proud to announce a new special project in partnership with Feed The Children. I hope this pilot program will be the beginning of a long relationship with FTC.

Here is how it works.

May 15, 2008 – August 31, 2008

The Affirmation Spot will donate $.05 US for every $0.49 affirmation sold and $.10 US for every $0.79 or higher priced item sold to Feed The Children.

That means you can now help others as you are helping yourself. You get the affirmations and other positive thought products you want and you are helping Feed The Children too.

We will be providing monthly updates (on www.theaffirmationspot.com) on how much is donated through this program. Of course, the program is only as successful as we make it.

Together we can help children around the world.

The Tips section offers updated information on the website and helpful tips to using affirmations.
  • Newest Affirmations – The Affirmation Spot has a new link on the side menu called Newest Affirmations. This section provides links to the newest affirmations on the website and the dates they are posted.
  • Passive Listening – Listening to your affirmations passively is a great way to infuse them into your self-talk without your conscious mind interfering as much. Listen while you work or do other activities that require most of your attention. By the same process that helps you learn the words to a song you didn’t know you were listening to, you will find your affirmations coming to mind more easily.

The Little Engine That Could (a Platt and Munk Classic)Many of you are familiar with famous 20th century children’s story The Little Engine That Could.According to Wikipedia, it is unclear who originally wrote the story, but it appeared in the publication Wellsprings for Young People in 1906 under the title “Thinking One Can”.  Four years later the story was published by The Daughters of the American Revolution. That same year, 1910, a version titled The Pony Engine written by Mary C. Jacobs appeared in The Kindergarten Review. (source wikipedia)

As with much of the literature I was exposed to in my early years, I first read the book at my grandmother’s house. Although I had no clue what an underdog was then, I was loved the idea that someone who was told they could not do something did it.

For those not familiar with the story, a long train has to be pulled over a large hill. Several anthropomorphized large engines refuse the task because they believe it impossible. However, one little engine volunteers to attempt. As the little engine builds steam going up the hill, it begins saying, “I think I can….I think I can….I think I can.” Finally, reaching the crest of the hill The Little Engine begins saying, “I know I can…I know I can…I know I can.” The Little Engine succeeds demonstrating the benefits of thinking positively.

This story is simple and childlike. Most wisdom is.

Look around and realize that every human-made thing you see began with an idea and the statement, “I think I can.” Very little has ever been accomplished by someone saying to themselves, “I don’t think I can.” Oh, occasionally a pessimist may succeed at something; proving the statement that even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

By and large, though, if you want to succeed in life – live your dreams, accomplish great things, build something, write something, leave your mark – you must attain the mindset, “I think I can.” You won’t have it every minute of every day. Doubt is part of life.  However, if you can get that mindset most of the time, success follows. As success grows on success, your “I think I can” mindset transitions into an “I know I can mindset”. When you get to that point you’re off to the races.

Now that you have children or grandchildren don’t forget this classic. Do what you can to instill in them an optimistic outlook on life. By helping them now, you prevent them from having to build it from scratch later in life.

Be peaceful Be prosperous Be positive!

25 Miscellaneous Affirmations – The Affirmation Spot for Friday January 25, 2008

First Person and Second Person Affirmations

athlete_hphones.jpgToday I am sharing 25 miscellaneous affirmations. Each follows the first person, second person formula. I’ve written before on the importance of using first and second person affirmations.

Many affirmation gurus suggest that all affirmations be written in the first person. First person affirmations are the most effective when reading, writing, or saying affirmations. Most people do not feel comfortable looking into a mirror and using “you” affirmations.woman_chair_hphones_rs.jpgHowever, audio affirmations open up a whole new realm. Listening is more passive than speaking or reading and you are used to hearing people speak to you in the second person.

My 20 years of experience with audio affirmations demonstrates that second-person affirmations are highly effective as audio affirmations. They offer “outside” confirmation of the first-person version of the affirmation.

For example, following “I am beautiful” with “You are beautiful” provides subconscious external confirmation of the first-person claim.

Tips

  • Commitment – keep in mind that the key to using affirmations – audio, written, or spoken – is commitment to your goal. Without a commitment to making the change or reaching your goal, affirmations are just words.
  • Repetition – repetition is the engine of affirmation success. For an affirmation to do its job in transforming your thoughts, it has to get at least equal time with the negative thoughts you want to replace.
  • How much/how often – speak, write, or listen to the first person affirmation 5-10 times and then repeat the second person affirmation the same number of times.  Do this at least twice each day. Stay with the affirmation(s) for at least 30 days. Use them again if the old thoughts return.
  • How to use first person affirmations – “Own” the first-person version. Speak or listen as if you are speaking passionately to yourself.
  • How to use second person affirmations – “Actively accept” the second person version. Speak or listen as if someone you respect is confirming your affirmation back to you.
  • How to know you’re getting results – there are several criteria for recognizing an affirmation’s success.
    • The old thought, behavior, or performance disappears or lessens.
    • Your mood, thinking, behavior, or performance change in a positive direction.
    • The old thought, behavior, or performance appears and your thinking immediately answers with the affirmation. This is really exciting. Your old thought is “I am stupid.” You think this thought and immediately it is answered by your affirmation, “I am highly intelligent.”
