Remember the Miracle That Is You

ray_meditating_rock_kauai_2013_5There is a natural human tendency to confuse our own frame of mind with the state of the world. When the stress and chaos of our daily lives closes in, we can easily slip into a sense of powerlessness and limitedness.

The world can appear dark and daunting. I was in that place just yesterday and a good friend “called me back to my true self” as Thich Nhat Hanh would say.

The miracles are all around us. Astonishingly enough, when we train ourselves to see the miracles manifest in the world we are forced to confront our personal miracle.

Have you ever considered that at this very moment there are people in outer space? There are people exploring the depths of the ocean. There 100,000 Americans in the air on airplanes right now. There are people climbing mountains, people praying, people weeping, people raising their voices in joyful song.

Somewhere in the world the sun is rising. Somewhere else it is setting. There are ants rebuilding their hills after a rainstorm and a mother leopard hunting prey to feed her hungry cubs. A rushing stream is eroding the soil along its bank while the air slowly claims the stream by evaporation. A baby monkey clings to her new mother while a 70 year-old elephant lies down and closes his eyes for last time; leaving this form he knows so well.

It is a big, amazing world. It is far larger and more wondrous than our limited perspective is capable of recognizing sometimes. When we become mired in our limitedness we forget that every single thing in existence – including us – is a miracle. Each came into being against overwhelming odds.

Further, not a single thing exists that is separate from us. The sun and the stream, the leopard and her prey, birth, living, dying – they are all a part of our common experience.

When we see ourselves in the context of the broader miracle…as an integral part of it….we become stronger and less vulnerable to the whims of our momentary frame of mind. The bottom line, my friend, is that you and I are miracles. We better learn to deal with it.

Take the Wheel in Your Life

Today’s Affirmation:

Today I stand up! Today I stand out! Today I stand strong!

skipperIf your strategy is to let life happen to you; it will. It’s time to put you back in the driver’s seat in your life. Ask yourself, honestly, “Am I the driver or the passenger in my life?”

Yes, I know we can’t control everything that happens to us. I also understand the wisdom of just being and going with the flow.

Neither is a reason to not be the driver in your own life. Things out of your control are going to happen whether you are the driver or the passenger in your life. That’s no reason not to be steering the things you can control. There is wisdom in “just being”, but it is so much more beneficial when done as a conscious choice to enhance your life rather than as the result of sitting in a rudderless boat.

Wayne Dyer talks about being not only the actor in your life, but also the director and producer. Actors are just given scripts that they then play out. They have no say in how the story line progresses. Directors make conscious choices about how the story is going to be told. Producers select the ideas that become the story lines created by directors and actors.

CHOOSE your storyline. It’s not enough to just tell or act someone else’s vision of your life. Put yourself in the driver’s seat.

Here are a few tips for putting you in the driver’s seat.

  1. Be the driver – stop seeing yourself as the passenger in a life where things “just happen” to you. You have a say and you have a lot of control over what happens in your life and how you react and adapt to it.
  2. Make the decisions – if you have become a passenger in your life, you have probably given control to someone else. Take it back. Be ready to accept advice from others (many heads are better than one), but make your own decisions.
  3. Take credit and responsibility – give yourself the credit for your achievements and take responsibility for your failures. Others play a role in successes and failures, but you are ultimately responsible for the results and choices in your life.
  4. Get back up – getting knocked down or facing a setback is an event not a way of life for people driving their lives. Life is full of bumps and bruises. Adapt and move on.
  5. Empower your thinking– practice empowered thinking. Here are the three aspects of empowered thinking.
    • Thought aspect – you have to think positively. Belief and commitment are important in any endeavor. Show me two people of equal talent – one who believes in his or her ability and one who does not – and I can tell you with high accuracy who will succeed. Positive thinking is imperative to maximize success potential in any endeavor. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t; you’re are right.” Positive thinking is the basis for empowered thinking, but empowered thinking is more than just positive thinking. It incorporates two more elements.
    • Knowledge aspect – you have to be informed. In achievement pursuits, know what you are trying to achieve and be informed on what is going to be involved in succeeding. Knowing that ahead of time can help you prepare mentally for it. When empowering your thinking to critically evaluate information you need to know as many of the facts as possible. Positive thinking without information does not allow you to take powerful action. When you combine positive thinking with information you lay the groundwork for powerful action in your life.
    • Action aspect – empowered thinking is more than just thinking and knowing. Empowered thinking includes action. If you have incorporated the first two elements, your actions can be motivated and informed. Until there is action, informed positive thinking is just wishful thinking. Your world is supported by intentions, but it is built by actions.
  6. Take action – the driver’s seat is a place of action. The passenger’s seat is a place of passivity, paralysis, and fear of moving forward and making change. Take action. Some actions don’t work out, but you cannot allow that fear to stop you from being the driver in your life.

If you’ve been the passenger for too long, make today the day to shift back over into the driver’s seat. Take the wheel and start steering!

The Power of L.O.S.S.

Today’s Affirmation:
I accept my losses and learn from them! Defeat is simply opportunity disguised as setback.

head_in_handsMany people see losing or a loss as a very negative thing. Like anything else, losing is all in how you look at it. A well-studied loss can be every bit as valuable in our journey as a victory. I’m not saying that losing is more fun than winning or that winning isn’t valuable. Clearly, we all want to win.

The truth is that most winners had to experience losing before they ever succeeded. So what if you chose to look at your losses in a slightly different light? A loss might be seen as Lessons and Obstacles on your way to Stunning Successes.

  • L – Lessons: Losing nearly always provides some lessons and some clues on how to improve. If you pay attention to the things that contributed to the loss, you can apply those lessons to future situations. Given time, you find the winning combination.
  • O – Obstacles – Losses are clearly obstacles. After all, your goal was to win or succeed. However, an obstacle might challenge you to improve or increase your determination to succeed. Used as mental and emotional leverage, a good obstacle can propel you to future victories.
  • S – Stunning – Losing can get you down and make you feel unworthy. In that dark moment of loss, remember to see what a stunning miracle you are. You are a diamond in the rough slowly being polished into something very special.
  • S – Successes – Success is that moment of break through when the journey of loss has been transformed into victory. The lessons, obstacles, and seeing how stunning you are kept you on track to enjoy the sweet taste of success.

So you see a loss is never loss. It’s an opportunity, an invitation to a journey of self-discovery, stretching yourself, and new achievement.

The Power of Your Mind

Today’s Affirmation:
I AM the engine of MY dreams! MY dreams NEVER give up on me and I NEVER give up on MY dreams!

The results are in! For thousands of years, the wisest of the wise among us have been telling us, “It’s all about the mind, stupid.” It makes sense. The mind, via the brain, is the part of our being that interacts with and makes sense of our environment.

Modern science has demonstrated that the Universe around us, despite its physical appearance to our senses, is really just energy. Our mind/brain structure is tuned into that energy and literally creates the individual and collective realities that we experience within that field of energy.

However, the mind is not just a passive receiver of frequencies. It also has the ability to transmit, when trained properly, frequencies that can manifest objects of its desire.

We’ve all heard quotes like these.

  • “The Universe is Change; our life is what our thoughts make of it.”
    ~ Marcus Aurelius
  • “Wealth is the capacity of man’s mind to think.”
    ~ Ayn Rand
  • “We become what we think about most of the time.”
    ~ Earl Nightingale
  • “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
    ~ Napoleon Hill
  • “We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.”
    ~Buddha
  • A man is a product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.”
    ~ Mohondas Gandhi
  • “For as a man thinks within himself, so is he.”
    ~ Proverbs 23:7

These are just a few of the most famous quotes. You could literally fill a book with quotes from humanity’s best and wisest people sending this very same message to you. But, are you listening?

Do you still believe that life is something that happens “out there” and “to you” rather than “in here” and “by you”? Do you still believe that your thinking is out of your control? There’s nothing you can do about it? Thoughts just pop into your head?

Affirmations are a workhorse tool when it comes to changing and choosing the thoughts you want to think in your life. It is more complex than just saying the words over and over, but  there are many resources on this blog and elsewhere to help you with the finer points.

You CAN change and master your thinking. That is the first thing you must believe.

I have been writing and recording audio affirmations for more than 20 years. First, I used them to improve my own thinking and my own life. Then I shared with them others. Now I have created a website called The Affirmation Spot where I make the power of audio affirmations available to you.

How does it work? Just like you learn the lyrics to a song with repeated listening. You’ve had that experience of suddenly knowing the lyrics to a song when you didn’t even know you’d been listening. Audio affirmations provide the same benefit. Soon the positive affirmations are appearing in your mind to replace the negative programming that was there.

I’d like to invite you to The Affirmation Spot today. You can download any single affirmation on the site for free to try or you can jump right and download the ones that make sense for you in your life right now.

You will find short affirmation singles, extended affirmations and meditations, and ebooks. I home record all the audio to keep the prices down and affordable for everyone.

You can always contact me directly and I am happy to help you get the most of your affirmations. I’ve been writing, recording, and using audio affirmations for more than 20 years. So, I’ve encountered and found solutions to the things you may face, as you begin using affirmations. I’m here to help.

Are We Conscious Enough to Change?

Thought for Today:

We unconsciously become the experience of previous generations, unless we consciously become the change.

sun in handsMost people in our modern world are aware that their DNA – the building blocks of our bodies – are passed on to us by our parents.

Attitudes and thought patterns are passed along in much the same way. Early on, our parents have the strongest influence and later our peer groups. Then, of course, we are all impacted by societal mental soup in which we swim. Few would argue that our own personality is in there somewhere impacting the person we become. However, we unconsciously accept and create models of the world based on how those around us see it.

The end product is often a human being holding strongly to beliefs he or she had almost no role in creating. Yet, our connection to those beliefs – that model of the world – are so strong many are willing to kill and die for them.

The question is sometimes asked, “If humans were capable of changing wouldn’t we have already changed?” The assumption in that question is that we cannot change because we have not changed.

Ethnic and religious wars spring up in our world over the simple right of the other to exist. Humans have and continue to enslave humans. Military, political, and economic empires are built on the sweat and tears of people we never see.

Can we change? Well, my answer is yes and no. If our plan is to unconsciously continue inheriting, then no we cannot and we will not change. On the other hand, if we choose become consciously aware of this habitual “mental DNA”, we most certainly can see an end to the unconsciousness.

Without artificial interference, there is little we can do with the physical genes we get other than make the most of them. Fortunately, our mental genes can easily be changed by us whenever we choose.
