Affirmation: “I am a one in a trillion miracle!
Susan Boyle is certainly among the most inspiring stories of 2009. Early in the year, as a contestant on the Britain’s Got Talent television show, Boyle appeared on stage the unlikeliest of stars. When asked by Simon Cowell if she had a dream, she said she wanted to be a professional singer.
The judges smirked. The audience giggled. Then Susan Boyle sang. Boy, did she sing! She beautifully belted out “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables.
She won over the audience, the judges, and the world. The video of her performance went super viral on YouTube. Susan Boyle was an overnight sensation. As the season progressed, Susan Boyle became the overwhelming favorite to win the show. However, in the end she was defeated by a dance company called Diversity.
This evening my wife and I watched a special featuring Susan Boyle singing and telling her remarkable and inspiring story to the world. Simon Cowell shared that after the defeat she was afraid she would vanish from the scene. He had promised her that he would make a record with her win or lose.
During tonight’s special she was presented with a triple platinum album for that record. In fact, her album has sold 4.5 million copies in about two weeks. It is the fastest selling album in history.
Why is Susan Boyle so inspiring? She has an amazing talent, no doubt. Yet, there are many great singers out there. Why is she special? She is special because she is the embodiment of what we all are – something extraordinary wrapped in an ordinary package.
She embodies the promise that lives within each of us and that sneaking suspicion that we have that it is never too late to live our dream. That if we persist and believe good things really can happen to us.
Right now millions of people around the world are living vicariously through Susan Boyle’s incredible accomplishment. I would encourage you take it one step further. In an interview during the show tonight, Susan said, “I was a spectator in life. Now I am a part of it.”
Stop spectating. Get out there and live your dream. Release your inner Susan Boyle.
“I am absolutely committed to being the person I came here to be!”
