India Goes to the Moon – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday October 22, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

“Determination…I push my limits and I achieve great things.” (click to hear it now)

Space represents such an opportunity for humanity. It is chance for us to work together on something important to all of us.

As The United States has largely rejected its space heritage in recent decades, other nations have stepped up in its place.

Today India took a major step forward in its space program by launching its first unmanned mission to the Moon. It joins its Asian counterparts Japan and China who already have craft orbiting our nearest celestial neighbor.

India’s craft dubbed Chandrayaan-1 – “Mooncraft” in ancient Sanskrit – lifted off today from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India. The launch site is located on India’s southeast coastline near India’s largest city Chennai.

For longtime readers of this blog, you know I love space. It is my belief that space exploration poses challenges and offers economic opportunities that could fundamentally alter how humans interact on Earth.

It is my firm belief that the global war economy – sadly still far and away Earth’s largest industry – could easily be replaced by a global space economy. In fact, I would argue that economic reasons are the primary driver of wars on our planet. Our planet could be fundamentally improved by the substitution of space exploration for war.

Chandrayaan-1’s two-year mission is to provide the most detailed maps ever of Earth’s nearest neighbor and set the stage for landing an unmanned craft on the Moon’s surface by 2012.

Last October Japan successfully placed it’s Kaguya moon vehicle in orbit around the moon (view Earthrise and Earthset videos from Kaguya). The Japanese have set a goal of 2025 for placing a manned mission on the surface of the moon.

China’s Chang’e vehicle has also been orbiting the Moon for nearly a year now. Russia has announced plans to land on the Moon around 2025 and even NASA has announced plans to return by 2020.

This transition to a spacefaring race is a positive step. Just as human beings the world over took pride in the accomplishment of landing humans on the Moon July 20, 1969; everyone can take pride as other nations continue to push the envelope of exploration in our Solar System.

So it is in a spirit of common cause, common hopes, and common dreams that I congratulate India on its accomplishment today. May Chandrayaan-1 expand human knowledge about the Moon and bring closer the day when humans work together to travel the stars.

That’s one giant step for India and one giant leap for humans in space.

China Gets A+ for Opening Ceremony – The Affirmation Spot for Saturday August 9, 2008

Fireworks filled the Beijing skies Friday evening and the hearts of Earth’s most populous nation seemed to beat in anticipatory unison. As the much of the globe looked on, China welcomed the world’s finest young athletes to The Games of the XXIX Olympiad in a memorable opening ceremony.

The show was a vast as China, as new as today, and as ancient as this proud culture. The ghosts of Confucius and Mao were clearly walking the stadium floor as China put on its best face for the world. In short, it was a display of the great paradoxes that is China.

We witnessed twinges of China’s totalitarian government that crushes internal dissent, commits cultural genocide in Tibet, and denies foreign journalists access to Internet. Conversely, the powerful heart of that nation and its people was almost palpable – even on TV. The good-natured, easy-going spirit of the Chinese people that is almost cliche was abundantly evident.

The Chinese people welcomed the world with a smile and enthusiasm unbounded by their restrictive environment. I recently heard a story on National Public Radio (NPR) where a 75-year-old Beijing man had learned several languages to help tourists find their way during The Games. One police officer had mastered 14 languages for the same reason.

The national pride reached a crescendo when the Chinese team, led by NBA star Yao Ming and 9-year-old Lin Hao, entered the stadium. Lin Hao was a victim of the recent Sechuan earthquake. He attained the status of a national hero for going back into his school and saving classmates. His story and his presence added a very human element to the drama.

The opening ceremony was punctuated by a death-defying Olympic flame lighting ceremony. 1984 Chinese gold medalist Li Ning, attached to wires like Peter Pan, ascended to the top of the stadium and then “ran” around the top of the entire stadium and lit the flame signaling the opening of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Clearly, the people of China are committed to sharing their friendship and their culture with the people of the world. Over these next few weeks, we will find out if China will rub off on the world or if the world will rub off on China through this experience.

I suspect it will be a little bit of both and that is probably a good thing. The rest of us can gain from the seemingly eternal optimism of the Chinese people and China’s government can reduce its paranoia and recognize that contact with and information from the outside world are not such a bad thing.

If those two things happen, these Olympics could have positive effects on the global dynamic long after the last medal ceremony.

To the millions of Chinese who worked to prepare everything that made these opening ceremonies amazing, I say thank you and well done!

From Ray’s Desk…

Hello, TAS friends

The past month has witnessed two major natural disasters in Asia. It’s an odd conundrum that the worst events bring out the best in the human spirit. People and nations around the world are mobilizing to help the people of Myanmar and China.

I think the reason these tragic events stir us so and bring out our best is that they remind us that we really are all in this together. We may differ politically, religiously, or economically. On ordinary days, those issues seem to matter so much.

However, when faced with unimaginable destruction and suffering, we seem to instinctively pull together. Maybe, in those moments, we are jolted awake to the fact that behind all our egoic masks and facades we are all subject to the same unpredictable whims of existence.

Such events can drive us to depression and withdrawal or engagement and enlightenment. They can create the thought that life is short and meaningless or that life is short and oh so precious.

There are circumstances beyond our control, but our thoughts and actions are always within our control.  When we realize that simple fact we are empowered and energized to pick up and move on from tragedy in our lives and in the world.

There are so many children who suffer on this planet every day. Sometimes it is the result of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the recent typhoon in Myanmar, or the Chinese earthquake. In other places, it is due to war, poverty, and other political conditions.

Founded in 1979, Feed The Children now has a presence in all 50 U.S. states and in more than 60 countries around the world. FTC delivers water and beverages, food, medicine, clothing, and much more – the necessities of life – to children and their families in distress.

The primary objective of The Affirmation Spot is to help people. The affirmations and other digital products we offer focus on improving the mental and spiritual aspects of our being. However, we cannot overlook the real, material needs of people.

That is why I am proud to announce a new special project in partnership with Feed The Children. I hope this pilot program will be the beginning of a long relationship with FTC.

Here is how it works.

May 15, 2008 – August 31, 2008

The Affirmation Spot will donate $.05 US for every $0.49 affirmation sold and $.10 US for every $0.79 or higher priced item sold to Feed The Children.

That means you can now help others as you are helping yourself. You get the affirmations and other positive thought products you want and you are helping Feed The Children too.

We will be providing monthly updates (on www.theaffirmationspot.com) on how much is donated through this program. Of course, the program is only as successful as we make it.

Together we can help children around the world.

We are going to take a break from the Hawaii recap today. A question I get from a lot of people who find out what I do with The Affirmation Spot is: “How can I stay positive in a negative world?”

It’s a great question and, short of a few very esteemed teachers in human history, one I’m sure we all grapple with. I’m a self-professed news junkie. I suppose it’s part of my natural curiosity about the world. I like to learn new things and see new things. I want to know what’s going on.

That passion gets me into trouble sometimes because I find myself feeling blue about our inhumanity to each other, wars, poverty, economic upset, and needless suffering. I have to pick myself up and remind myself that we all have been given enormous power to deal with our stresses, difficulties, and concerns; if only we choose to call on that power.

There’s an old quip that says, “What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?” It refers to someone who brings up an issue that has no bearing on the current conversation. However, today everything, it seems, has to do with the price of something in China.

It appears that many of us are about to face some of the most difficult economic times of our generation. The news of currency inflation, mortgage and credit crises, foreclosures, bankruptcies, downsizing, food shortages, and rapidly rising commodity prices flood the airwaves daily.

How bad is it? Shortages combined with the falling dollar are driving commodities like corn, rice, wheat, oil, and others to all-time record highs. Faulty lending and borrowing practices of recent years combined with a speculative housing market are creating housing numbers not recorded  since the 1930s.

There are food riots in Haiti. The Philipino government is threatening people who hoard rice with lifetime imprisonment. Now, some suppliers in the U.S. are being cautioned about possible shortages. Costco and Sam’s Club recently imposed limits on commercial rice orders.

“Well, that’s very negative,” you might say.

Facts are not negative or positive they are facts. The rapid rise of the Chinese and Indian middle classes, the conversion of foodstuffs for people and livestock to alternative energy production, and major crop failures have created a kind of perfect storm for world food supplies.

All appearances are that this is a real and somewhat befuddling problem without quick answers.

Pulling the pillow over our heads and pretending will not make difficulty go away. The question is not whether we can avoid tough times, but rather are we equipped to deal with them?

That leads me to Step 1 of how to stay positive in a negative world:

  1. Face negatives head on. Be aware, awake, and face reality.
  2. Positive thinking is often criticized for failing to acknowledge reality. I believe it is a prerequisite to growth and success. You don’t want to get mired or stuck in it, but acknowledging it is so important.

If we are not willing to face reality and take responsibility for our own awareness, we cannot be empowered to succeed in this world. We cannot stay positive in a negative world without the ability to face reality with open eyes.

Some people tell me they don’t ever watch the news because it is so negative and depressing. I concur. However, we have two choices. We  can be laying on the beach unaware of a coming tsunami and be blissfully washed away when it comes or we can pay attention to the warning system and TAKE ACTION to get ourselves in the best position for it.

The latter, while uncomfortable sometimes, is positive because it empowers us to act on our knowledge of what is happening. The other option leaves us hanging our hats on fate.

Step 2 of how to stay positive in a negative world.

  3. Distinguish legitimate threats from phony ones.
  4. This is a tricky one. The news media and government seem to take a kind of pleasure in keeping us in a constant state of crisis. Not everything is a crisis. Therefore, it becomes important to decide what should really concern us. We need not worry about everything just because we saw a news story on it.

There are real threats in the world – our personal environment and the global environment – and it behooves us to spend our precious energy dealing with the real ones instead of chasing phantoms with our worry.

Step 3 of how stay positive in a negative world.

  5. Have a plan of action Once you identify real threats to your happiness develop an action plan to deal with them. Not everything is in your control, but make sure you do the things you can to maximize your chances for success. You will be at least that far ahead of those who did not do steps 1 and 2.
  6. Step 4 of how to stay positive in a negative world.

  7. Know you have all the tools and the strength to face any challenge.
  8.  This is the really critical one. You see it doesn’t matter what we have to deal with or face in life. It’s all about how we handle it. It’s all about realizing we can grow and learn and prosper in any envrionment.

Step 5 oof how to stay positive in a negative world.

  9. Remember that you are headed to a better place.

You are not planning to stay and dwell on the negatives. You are constantly in motion to bring about better, more positive outcomes for yourself and those around you. Every negative in the world has positive counter point. Every bit of pain can become impetus to achieve great things.

Please don’t disempower yourself by not being informed. We have a responsibility as citizens, as people, as members of the human family to be empowered and make informed decisions about our future.

Stand, face the wind, and say, “Whatever comes I can handle it.”

    Stay positive stay inspired!

Today, since this is a blog of positive and empowered thinking, I decided to find all the positives about China’s role in Tibet and post them in one place.

Here is the complete list:

No, I’m not using a white font. It’s a very short list. China (the regime not the people), go home! Fifty years of brutal occupation, repression, and social re-engineering to bolster your unwarranted claim on the Tibetan plateau must end. The fact that western governments and businesses are too indebted and dependent on you to call your policies what they are, is of no consequence.

His Holiness The Dalai Lama  Tibetan Children  Tiananmen Square Tank Stand Off

The Dalai Lama has more credibility in the hearts and minds of the people of this planet than your regime. That is why you have to resort to calling him names and spreading lies about him.

Dear, readers, who do you trust?

One of the Dalai Lama’s (Text of 1989 Nobel Peace Prize Speech) favorite quotes:

“As long as space remains,
as long as sentient beings remain,
may I too remain
and dispel the miseries of the world. “

The Chinese government’s actions in Tibet over the years:

Well, their actions speak for themselves. Religious and political repression, destruction of Tibetan culture, human rights violations, and a repopulation strategy designed to extinguish Tibetan identity. NICE!

The best measure of whether or not Tibet is part of China is the view of the Tibetan people. They don’t believe they are Chinese. I guess that settles it.

The Olympics are a great, global event. They embody sportsmanship, brotherhood, and peace. They are an opportunity for a nation to show itself in a favorable light. Another regime tried to polish its image when it hosted The Olympics in 1936.  The Olympics are a majestic and wonderful stage. However, they cannot hide the brutal face of an authoritarian regional hegemon oppressing its peaceful neighbor under the pretext of helping it.

Go home and let the Tibetan people have their culture. What a concept (President Bush, are you listening?) in a world where global powers attack others “for their own good.”

The Olympics have given China the world stage. And the world is watching.

Be peaceful Be prosperous Be positive!
