Are You Pole-Vaulting in Quick Sand?

Today’s Affirmation:

“I succeed by helping my clients succeed.”
(Click the affirmation to hear the mp3 version)

pole_vault1The image is rather humorous to imagine, isn’t it? Picture a pole-vaulter racing down the track and planting his pole in a vat of quick sand to launch. What do you think would happen?

Yet many of us do that every day. Our careers, businesses, and personal lives are a lot like a pole-vaulting competition. As we progress, someone keeps moving the bar higher each time. Have we set a firm foundation for success?

The pole represents the actions we take to “vault” over our goals. Our thoughts are the foundation we use to launch. If our thoughts are like quick sand – not empowering and supportive of our goals – then no amount of action is going to get us where we want to go. We have to have a solid foundation from which to launch our activity.

Unfortunately, establishing and maintaining success-generating thoughts is not a “once and done” proposition.

Henry David Thoreau once wrote:

“As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.”

Here are some simple steps to help you create a firm mental foundation for your actions.

  • Add Thinking Time – Many people forget to account for time to think, imagine, and dream. When you start a new project or create an action or business plan add “thinking time” into your time line as the first step. Thinking before you act creates a firm foundation for success.
  • Empower Your Thinking – Now that you’ve added thinking time focus on creating the kinds of thoughts that support your plans, goals, and dreams. Elevate your strengths and abilities and reduce focus on negatives and naysayers. Harness the power of your thinking to propel you forward rather than hold you back.
  • Rinse and Repeat – Keep the positive, empowered thoughts coming. As you move forward, you may encounter doubts or headwinds.  Your thoughts are a critical buffer to keep you going. Many, many people give up as soon as the obstacles appear because their thoughts have not prepared them to handle it. Stay focused on your mental game to keep your edge and weather storms.
  • Grow and Change – Even power thoughts can be misdirected. The point is not to beat your head against an unmovable wall. That is stubbornness not success. An empowered thinker is constantly reevaluating and adjusting course to keep steering towards the goal. Sometimes the goal even changes through the process. Be adaptable and ready transition your thoughts to support the new goal.

Particularly in the current environment, your thoughts are your life-line to keep you going. Make sure they are rock solid and not quick sand. The bottom line is that the first step to any achievement is an empowered thought. The secret to sustained success is constant maintenance of your thinking.

Make getting your thoughts empowered, aligned, and on board the first step in every action plan or business plan you create. Don’t try to pole-vault in quick sand.

Think It! Believe It! Do It! Be It!

2009 Affirmation

“This year I am absolutely committed to being the person I came here to be!”

Your Belief Inventory – The Affirmation Spot for Monday January 12, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“This year I am absolutely committed to being the person I came here to be.”
(This is the official TAS affirmation for 2009. Click the affirmation to hear the mp3 version)

yesterdayWhat you believe about you, your life, and the world impacts your experience of them. Your beliefs inform your thoughts and your thoughts generate your actions. And, of course, your actions create the world where you live. It’s very important to be aware of your beliefs.

Are your current beliefs fully conscious to you? Or, is your self-perception stuck in yesterday? Do you know what you believe today? Of course, the quick answer is “yes”. Do you really?

Just as a once- thriving river bed slowly dries up and changes course your beliefs can subtly shift over time almost without your knowledge. You don’t notice it day to day, but over years the change can be dramatic.

Life is an ever-changing adventure, but sometimes your self-perception and the perception of others does not keep up with who you are today.

You and the people around you may have an outdated idea of who you are.

Have you had the experience of really advancing in your professional or personal life only to have your family not recognize the change? You go home for the holidays and your mother still sees you and treats you like you’re 13. It can be very frustrating when others fail to recognize the strides and leaps you have made in life. Their perception of you can become locked in time.

When I was 25 I became seriously ill and spent several weeks in the hospital. One of the best internists in the city took my case. He became my personal physician for several years. He was a gifted and talented doctor, but he never let go of his vision of me as that sick person lying in a hospital bed. Finally, I had to move on and find a new doctor. His belief about who I was didn’t keep up with reality.

While frustrating when other people do this to you, you often do it to yourself. Has your perception of who you are kept up with the reality?

Here is an idea to help you get in touch with who you are today. Complete a Belief Inventory.

Take each of the following dimensions of your life (feel free to add your own) and write a brief description of your belief on that area of your life.

Don’t jump the gun. Give it some real thought. Really capture your true beliefs on each of these topics.

Belief Inventory

  • Personality
  • Relationships
  • Career
  • Body image
  • Future
  • Spiritual life
  • Life
  • Politics

Here’s the punchline. Now that you better understand where you really stand on these aspects of your life you can map a strategy for self-development based on where you really are instead of where you thought you were.

If you’re really bold, share it with family and friends and have them complete one on you. The feedback could be interesting and you will get a sense of who they think you are.

Have fun with your Belief Inventory and I’d love to hear how it comes out.

Inner Architect – A Book Review – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday July 8, 2008

A few generations ago our ancestors began trading their family businesses and farms for the upward mobility offered by the corporate world. The tradeoff seemed to be a success. The middle class grew and there was prosperity. Little could our great grandparents have known how unsatisfying and soul-voiding this way of life would become for many in future generations.

The good news is that today technology and skills learned in the corporate world are making new self-directed lives possible. There is a renaissance in entrepreneurship. People are leaving the corporate world in growing numbers to pursue their own vision for their lives. They are creating lives of fulfillment and financial security by following their bliss.
There are a plethora of books and coaches out there promising to help you find that bliss. However, I recently became aware of a particular book that really delivers. It places the keys for your new life firmly in your hands.

“I felt stuck and didn’t know what to do about it. My heart had been absent from my work for a long time. I had a fuzzy idea about what I really wanted to do, but I couldn’t even imagine how I could possibly make it happen. So I continued to hold on to the job that was attached to my paycheck.” … “I felt dead inside. It then dawned on me what I was doing – trading the precious hours of my life for money and a piece of security. This revelation brought me to the understanding that the life I had created was one I was no longer willing to tolerate.”

So writes Susan Hanshaw, in the introduction to her latest book Inner Architect: How to Build the Life You Were Designed to Live.

With those words, Hanshaw captures the feelings of millions of people who trudge off to jobs each day attracted by the gravitational pull of the paycheck and the inertia of the obligations that have grown up around that paycheck.

Hanshaw was vice-president and second-in-command of a thriving direct marketing firm. She was making good money and “living the American dream.” The only problem is that she wasn’t happy. Her work had become meaningless because it was not aligned to who she wanted to be.

Maybe you have felt that same sense desperation and wondered if there is a way out. You have “tried” a side business or two; or dabbled with your great American novel.

Your heart was in the right place, but the truth is you didn’t really have a plan and your momentary energy turned to disappointment when things didn’t go as you hoped. You found yourself back in your cube less confident and more confused than ever.

Thankfully, Susan Hanshaw chose not to go back to her office. Instead, she writes, “I wrote my resignation letter that night and handed it to my boss the following day.” Thus began her journey of self-discovery and hard-earned lessons about what it really takes to move from the corporation to the life of your dreams.

The great American mythologist Joseph Campbell is often quoted for his affirmation, “Follow your bliss!”

“Yes,” you say, “I want to follow my bliss, but how? How can I abandon the paycheck? How can I develop the confidence? How can I change my vision of myself? How can I develop a plan for success? How can I stick to my plan?”

Inner Architect is a step-by-step master’s guide to charting a course for your heart’s desires and creating success on that path from someone who’s been there and done that. Susan Hanshaw consciously offers encouragement and wisdom through inspiring material and workbook exercises. The exercises are designed to draw out the knowledge, wisdom, and courage necessary for you to answer your questions and to claim your life back.

Hanshaw’s process is comprised of six phases:

  • Considering Change
  • Designing the Job You Love
  • Breaking Through Fear
  • Creating Your Plan
  • Building from the Inside Out
  • Moving into Your New Life

Each phase includes a series of steps and thought processes to work through. Hanshaw’s process is at once logical, emotional, and spiritual. This author really “gets it” that your whole self is engaged in bold, life-changing choices and she expertly provides the tools you need to deal with each aspect of your decision, plan, and implementation.

Inner Architect combines the practicality of a book you’d find in the business section of the bookstore with the insight and compassion of a book from the self-improvement section. This book helps the logical business person connect with the other aspects of his or her being that are needed to succeed in this change. It helps organize the emotional person to develop a concrete plan for action.

Inner Architect offers no illusions that “the leap” is going to be easy or work-free; or that it is not frightening. Hanshaw warmly dispels your worries by acknowledging them and openly sharing her own fears, obstacles, and heartaches from her journey.

Each step in the book is punctuated with a Key to Evaluate section. Here Susan assumes the role of coach. She asks questions that ensure you have digested the material and that you are committed to moving to the next step. It’s your gut check to see how committed you are to making the choices your change requires.

Inner Architect is not for the casual cube farm daydreamer. Rather, it is for the serious-minded person ready to affect real change in his or her life, but needing some guidance on how to get there. Those readers will walk away from this read with a fully-developed action plan to change themselves and their lives.

Even if you are not yet ready to make the “hand in your resignation leap”, Inner Architect allows you to work at your own pace. You can begin working towards your goal today and arrive when you are ready.

More than anything Inner Architect by Susan Hanshaw offers a tested route to living a happier, more fulfilled life – personally and professionally. It lights the way to your bliss, if only you choose to follow it.

Over the past several months, I’ve been conducting an Internet survey on how people use affirmations. My goal is eventually to use the research to write a book about affirmations.

I’ve been a little surprised by the results of the survey. Only 43% of people who use affirmations report that they are using some form of audio affirmation. Of those using audio affirmations, less than half are making use of mp3 affirmations. That means only 18% of affirmation users are taking advantage of the MP3 format.

The proliferation of iPods, MP3 players, and MP3-capable cell phones makes it easier than ever to take affirmations and positive thoughts with you wherever you go and use them whenever you want. The great part is that you don’t even have to have an MP3 player or iPod to take advantage of it.

But why audio affirmations and specifically MP3 affirmations?

9 Reasons MP3 Affirmations Rock!

  1. Play flexibility – as compared to other audio formats, MP3 affirmations are the most flexible. They can be played on an array devices – iPods, MP3 players, MP3-capable cell phones, MP3-capable PDAs, your computer, or even burned to a CD – while tapes and CDs are limited to devices capable of playing them.
  2. Select flexibility – MP3 affirmations are often available as individual tracks. This allows you to select only the specific affirmations you want rather than having to pay for affirmations you will never use.
  3. Save money – as compared with any other types of audio affirmations, MP3 downloads save money. They can often be purchased as individual downloads like a song from iTunes rather than as expensive packages.
  4. Mirror negative information – audio affirmations mirror the way you get most of your negative information (through sound). Audio affirmations directly counter the negative audio information that accumulates as you go through the day.
  5. Save time – audio affirmations – unlike read affirmations, visualization board affirmations, subliminal software, and spoken affirmations – do not require you to set aside time to use them. Your full concentration is not required. They are perfect for multi-tasking. I often listen to affirmations while I’m working, exercising, or doing other activities. In fact, I find this kind of passive listening some of the most beneficial. You absorb the affirmations the way you absorb words to a song you didn’t even know you were listening to it.
  6. Increase enjoyment – listening to affirmations can be very enjoyable. This is especially true when they are set to music. You can easily create an affirmation playlists on your MP3 player or your computer’s media player or mix the affirmations in with your regular music playlists for added motivation.
  7. Privacy – with headphones audio affirmations can be used virtually anywhere without anyone else knowing what you are doing. Again, other affirmations forms do not lend themselves to this kind of privacy. Books, websites, and computer screens can all give away what you are doing.
  8. Use anywhere – with the previously mentioned portable devices, your affirmations can go with you to be used exactly when and where you need them. Take your affirmations into the locker room before the big game. Listen to them on the way to the big sales call or even while you wait for your meeting. Listen to them when you’re relaxing in the hammock. Absorb your affirmations along with “the sun” while tanning. Anyplace your portable device goes, your affirmations can follow.
  9. Better for the Environment – MP3 downloads have one very specific advantage over their CD, DVD, and cassette tape counterparts. They are far more environmentally friendly. Read this article describing the impact digital media – their production and disposal – has on the environment. Downloadable MP3 affirmations are “the green way” to get your affirmations.

The MP3 revolution can make your affirmations more effective, easier to use, and less expensive. Are you taking advantage of it?

Be peaceful Be prosperous!

I plan to record this and add it to the website in the near future, but decided to share the text today. If you read this to yourself, you can feel your confidence rising and your stress melting away. Why a manifesto? This self-dialogue is full of self-declarations of your readiness to move forward to healing, success, peace, or whatever your immediate goals are.candle1.jpg

The first key is to realize that you have the courage, the wisdom and the strength within you to make the changes you want to make in your life; to bring about the healing you seek. For, in truth your healing comes from within. Others may facilitate or act as mediators, but it is the healer within you that is bringing about the miracle you are receiving right now. Know this deeply.

Focus your healing energies on bringing about an end to your suffering. This healing is occurring within you right now. It is not far off in the future. Your healing is a reality right now in this moment. You are experiencing a complete healing. Your mind, body, emotions, and spirit are all benefiting. Joy is increasing and expanding in your life exponentially. Your horizons are growing brighter and brighter.

You are opening your heart and your mind to possibilities you had never before considered. Right now you are accepting that anything and everything is possible for you. You understand that the circumstances in your life are always perfect to create the highest version of yourself. Your tools, your gifts, and your talents are more than enough to create a life of abundant success and happiness. Feel the joy increasing in your life.

Feel your confidence rising. There is no situation you cannot handle. There are no limits to what you can achieve. Nothing can occur that you can’t learn from and turn to your advantage. As your joy increases and your happiness manifests; there is less room for fear in your life, less room for self-doubt. These aspects of yourself are clearly decreasing in your life.

In fact, you are, as I speak, releasing your fears, releasing your self-doubt. They serve no purpose in your life. So you are releasing them and letting them go. You are successful. You think like a success, you talk like a success, you act like a success. You are a success!  Your success is complete; encompassing all aspects of your life.

Your spiritual life is a success, your career is a success, and your relationships are a success. You are a success. And success means progress in every area of your life. You are releasing the habitual patterns of thought and action that have held you back in the past.

You are releasing thoughts and actions that limit you in any way, shape, or form. By releasing these limiting patterns in your life; you are now completely free to live your life in this moment and to create your highest good in the here and now. You are determined to be fully present in the experience of now. You are intuitive, creative, and spontaneous in creating your new life – each moment, each day.

Feel the harmony, strength, and confidence this knowing creates deep within you. You are becoming the person you always knew you could be right this moment!

Peace…

Ray
