Time to Be Who You Came Here to Be – The Affirmation Spot for Friday January 2, 2009

starfield2Unless you adhere to the most skeptical view of evolution, you probably believe that life has a purpose. There is a reason you – and everyone and everything that shares this planet with you – are here. Your very presence is a certifiable miracle.

Literally trillions of events in the history of this universe had to happen just right for you to be here. If any one of them had happened another way, then no you.

In my book, that makes your existence rather significant.

That begs the question. Why are you here? What are you here to be?

More than likely you know the answer to that question. It’s hidden or forgotten somewhere deep inside of you, but it is there. You’ve had inklings of it throughout your life. There are those things you just love doing and experiencing. There are places you just love to be. Perhaps at one time you dreamed of doing those things or being in those places.

Somewhere along the line your dreams and reality collided.  You gave up on the dreams to live in “reality.” “They” told you your dreams were not realistic and you bought it. My question to you is do your dreams and your reality have to be conflict? Can your dreams become your reality?

The great thinkers and spiritual teachers of our species have been clear and unequivocal in their conviction that our dreams can be our reality. Few things have been more universally taught.

That’s not to say that you can blink your eyes “Genie-style” and your wish becomes your life. It may take work. There may be challenges. You might have to make hard choices. None of the great sages ever promised otherwise.

Are your dreams worth it or not?

The joy and jubilation created by the new year will pass and “real life” will begin again. The momentum you need to make the changes you are promising yourself this year need to be boosted by something inspirational, if they are to survive.

Your dreams fit the bill perfectly. Suspend your disbelief and start walking in the direction of your dreams. As you get in better “dream shape” pick it up to a jog. By the end of the journey, you will be in full sprint towards your dreams.

Soon you will be embracing your deepest dreams and spending your days living your dreams instead of…well…dreaming about them. Belief and commitment are the only price of admission.

It’s time to “show up” and be the people we came here to be in 2009! Are you with me?

New Year’s Day 2009 – The Affirmation Spot for January 1, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

fireworks1As 2009 begins, 2008 and all its memories slip into the past. There they join memories from other years. It’s easy to allow our present to become a place where we long for the past. The past always seems somehow noble and safe from a distance. As long as we don’t live in the past, there is no harm in remembering it.

The past, though, has a lesson for the present. All those fond memories were once a “right now”. Did we enjoy them to their fullest when we were there? We remember them fondly now, but did we truly and fully experience their miracle then?

2009 is now full of potential and memories to be created. As we create them, let us pledge to live each one to its fullest and experience it to the max.

So what does 2009 promise? The words that come to mind are Transformation and Renaissance. There are some very hopeful and inspiring possibilities on the horizon.

Global – This year, I believe, has the potential for a Renaissance on so many fronts. It’s becoming apparent – as we’ve seen in recent months – that many of the ways we think about, see, and interact with the world no longer serve us.

Transformation is in the air as outmoded institutions and systems struggle to survive.  Renaissance is happening, but we must ensure it is the kind of Renaissance that leads to a freer, more enlightened humanity.

Bottom-up empowerment must win out against Top-down control. Centralized authority and control – be it governmental, economic, military, spiritual, or corporate – are the problem not the solution. These systems stifle the creativity and collaboration needed to advance.

However, these systems are going to try to hold on to power with white-knuckled determination. Their power and control are what they know and what they are comfortable with. In my opinion, it is not global recession we are witnessing, but global transformation.

That new posidigm is coming into view, but the existing negadigm is going to drag its feet. Wisdom and empowered thinking will be at a premium, but they will see us through.

Personal – Changes in the global system necessitate change within us. As we seek to grasp new models for universal advancement, we also have inner work that we know needs to happen.

Resolutions are great, but if you’re bold enough this year; replace your resolutions with revolutions. Your life can be transformed by this time next year, if you choose. You are the deciding factor.

There is no throwing the baby out with the bathwater here. What still works for the world and for us will remain. We are simply going to see a shedding of old paradigms created for another era. 2009 seems poised to be a pivotal year in this shift.

We are, indeed, living in interesting times.

Everything that happens, regardless of the immediate suffering or joy it creates, perfectly prepares you to fulfill your purpose and achieve your goals. Focus, therefore, always on your experience and the lessons it has to teach you.

For just as the sun knows when to rise and the rose knows when to bloom, so too will you know when it is your moment to step forward and shine. It will be obvious that circumstances call for the special gifts and personal abilities that are uniquely yours.

Remember no matter where life has led you or how much pain you have endured, you still have something wonderful within that you, and only you, can contribute to the universe. Never let anyone tell you that your contribution is umimportant.

I’d dare say that your contribution is so important that the natural unfolding of the universe is undermined when you or anyone else fails to make their contribution. Live as if you dwell in a blessed state of grace because you do. Act as if you are endowed with enormous power to make a difference because you are.

Each day is one small deposit in your larger contribution to all of existence. Do yourself and the rest of us a huge favor and don’t forget to make it.

Thomas Jefferson penned one of the most powerful affirmations in all of human history. His words are the first of his preamble to The Declaration of Independence. Jefferson wrote:






“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

How powerful is that? For me, this is the beginning point for how we should view the other people who share this planet with us. Each one is innately endowed with these rights and qualities.

In our modern world, there are people picking apart Jefferson’s affirmation. I hear people complaining that, “He says ‘all men’ and not all people.” Others devalue the affirmation because they don’t believe in a creator.

Still others – mostly government – have replaced “creator” with “government”. They are actively trying to convince you that the real reading is “…They are endowed by their government with certain situationally revokable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

All of this misses the key point of Jefferson’s affirmation. People are innately equal in their right to be and to pursue their lives. Each and every person has enormous potential that can only be unlocked when they are granted the freedom to explore it. That is more important than his wording. That is the principle we must all strive to embody in our own lives and allow others to embody in theirs.

These innate rights, freedoms, and qualities are unrevokable. They are yours simply because you are here – a human being living on this planet. They are not subject to situation or fad. They cannot be denied by governments or institutions. These entities may do so, but when they do they are violating the most sacred aspect of the human being.

You are sacred. Your rights are sacred. Your dreams and potential are sacred. Your right to pursue happiness is sacred. So, too, is everyone else’s sacred.

In my view, we must “Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident” if we are to create the beautiful world that is our destiny.

April caught this rainbow framing the Honolulu skyline before our cruise sailed.There is one thing that is so often overlooked by people pursuing business, spiritual, or personal goals. You have to remember to reward yourself once in a while.

It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit and forget to enjoy the fruits. Our big reward this year was our trip to Hawaii. We spoiled ourselves a little by going two years in a row, but we’re worth it and so are you!

Your reward is whatever rejuvenates, refreshes, or reinspires you to get back on the path or back in the fight. Take the time to figure out what those things are and use them as the carrots that spur you along as you pursue your objectives, goals, and dreams.

If I gave you 60 seconds right now, could you name five things that do that for you or your family? You need to know these things and keep them in front of you to help you through the tough spots that inevitably come into our lives.

Reward yourself! You’re worth it. Your family is worth it. 

April and me are starting a vision board. It’s a term that describes the latest incarnation of the old goals board. You place pictures, items, and words on a board that keep you focused on your goals and their rewards. They need not be things. They can be experiences. They can be changes you want to see in the world. Whatever inspires YOU!

Trendy, yes I know, but it’s a very effective way to help you visualize where you are going, what keeps fuel in your tank, and why you are doing that 16-hour day today.

Hawaii Part I

OK. I promised some play-by-play of Hawaii and some pictures. Today is part one. I will work the rest of the story into upcoming posts.

April 18 and April 19

We arrived in Honolulu on Friday April 18 and checked in to the beautiful Pacific Beach Hotel on Waikiki. April snapped this gorgeous photo of the sun setting with sailboats in the foreground.

The sand was white and soft and the sunset was memorable. We enjoyed a small taste of the Waikiki night life taking in some hula dancers and a local band at the outdoor hotel coffee shop.

Saturday we enjoyed some shopping and sightseeing near the beach before boarding Norwegian Cruise Line America’s Pride of America. The ship sailed at 8 p.m. leaving the lights of Honolulu behind and setting course for Hilo.

April 20

Sunday morning we arrived in Hilo and managed to catch the site of one of the few lingering humpback whales that had not left yet for Alaska. We had a date with the world’s most active volcano Mt. Kiluwea. Our maiden excursion on this cruise was an eight-mile bike ride around the rim of the volcano.

The weather was chilly and rainy and felt more like Seattle than Hawaii. However, the volcano did not disappoint. The photo shows April and me decked out for our rainy bike ride with the volcano’s main vent spewing in the background.

That evening the ship backed up along the Hilo coast allowing us to see the volcano at night.

While not as impressive as last year, Kiluwea was hard at work creating the newest land on Earth. April got this photo of two lava streams flowing into the ocean and the smoke being generated as 2000 degrees meets the cool waters of the Pacific.

That night we enjoyed a beautiful night at sea with a near full moon lighting the way. We slept with sliding glass door to the balcony open and drifted off to sleep to the gentle rocking and hypnotic sound of the placid Pacific.

This week American Idol aired its second annual Idol Gives Back program. American Idol has successfully raised money that would make Jerry Lewis blush. Last year’s program raised about $76 million and this year’s, at last count, was over $60 million and still going.

The show featured a star-rich cast including Bono, Brad Pitt, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Miley Cyrus, and dozens of other celebrities.

The program has a duel focus in that it raises money for domestic American and international causes. This year’s show focused on six charities:

Idol Gives Back represents a hopeful trend in primetime network television. This trend is one of social responsibility and community consciousness. It mixes business with helping others. Along with shows like Oprah’s Big Give, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and even Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, American Idol Gives Back is leading the way towards making giving and helping others cool again.

Thinking Inside the Box


Today’s Affirmation:
Million dollar ideas are as common as grass. My million dollar idea is coming to me today.


How inventive are you? Do you see a roadblock or an opportunity when you encounter a challenge? When your million dollar idea comes along will you recognize it or dismiss it as crazy?

Innovation is not always miraculous. Sometimes it’s simplicity. It’s born of necessity and an otherwise ordinary idea meeting in the right time and place.

We’re all constantly told to “think outside the box” when we need to be creative. Sometimes, though, innovation requires us to think inside the box.

My friend Gerry passed along an e-mail she received about a recent Japanese innovation – square watermelons!

Japanese grocers had a problem. Their stores are much smaller than American stores and so space is limited. Watermelons take up a lot of room and they don’t stack neatly in a tight space.

A natural response would be to say that watermelons are round and that’s just the way it is. However, Japanese farmers decided that if the grocers needed square watermelons they would come up with a way to do it. As it turns out, watermelons will grow in the shape of a square when they are planted in a square box.

Japanese consumers, who also have smaller refrigerators, loved the new watermelons. Farmers were able to sell the melons at premium prices. Everyone won.

At the bottom of the e-mail, its originator offered some outstanding analysis that benefits all of us when confronting a challenging issue.

  • Don’t Assume: The major problem was that most people had always seen round watermelons so they automatically assumed that square watermelons were impossible before even thinking about the question. Things that you have been doing a certain way your entire life have taken on the aura of the round watermelon and you likely don’t even take the time to consider if there is another way to do it. Breaking yourself from assuming this way can greatly improve your overall life as you are constantly looking for new and better ways to do things. This was one of the most difficult things for me to do because most of the assumptions I make, I don’t even realize that I’m making them. They seem perfectly logical on the surface, so I have to constantly make an effort to question them.
  • Question habits: The best way to tackle these assumptions is to question your habits. If you can make an effort to question the way you do things on a consistent basis, you will find that you can continually improve the way that you live your life. Forming habits when they have been well thought out is usually a positive thing, but most of us have adopted our habits from various people and places without even thinking about them. I have changed a large number of habits that I have had after taking the time to question them and continue to do so. Some of them I have know idea where they came from while others I can trace to certain people or instances in my life. It’s a never ending process, but by doing this, you can consistently strive toward making all aspects of your life more enjoyable instead of defaulting to what you have now.
  • Be creative: When faced with a problem, be creative in looking for a solution. This often requires thinking outside the box. Most people who viewed this question likely thought they were being asked how they could genetically alter water melons to grow square which would be a much more difficult process to accomplish. By looking at the question from an alternative perspective, however, the solution was quite simple. Being creative and looking at things in different ways in all portions of your life will help you find solutions to many problems where others can’t see them. I am not a creative person, but I’ve found that the more that you look at things from different perspectives, the more creative I have become. It’s a learned art and builds upon itself.
  • Look for a better way: The square watermelon question was simply seeking a better and more convenient way to do something. The stores had flagged a problem they were having and asked if a solution was possible. It’s impossible to find a better way if you are never asking the question in the first place. I try to ask if there is a better way of doing the things that I do and I constantly write down the things I wish I could do (but currently can’t) since these are usually hints about steps I need to change. Get into the habit of asking yourself, “Is there a better way I could be doing this?” and you will find there often is.
  • Impossibilities often aren’t: If you begin with the notion that something is impossible, then it obviously will be for you. If, on the other hand, you decide to see if something is possible or not, you will find out through trial and error.   Take away the lessons from the square watermelons and apply them to all areas in your life (work, finances, relationships, etc) and you will find that by consistently applying them, you will constantly be improving all aspects of your life.

The famed starfleet captain Jean-Luc Picard once said, “Something is only impossible until it’s not.” Square watermelons are not impossible and neither, more than likely, is your challenge. You just need to look with a fresh pair of eyes. And whether in or out of the box, let your spirit of invention lead you to success.
