Today’s Affirmation:

Success Affirmation: My hard work is paying off in an avalanche of success!

There is a narrow margin between greatness and near greatness when it comes to sports and life. But for a 1/100th of a second here or an extra step there, the winners and the almosts would be quite different. The message is that the margin of victory is small, but opportunities for success are many.

It is my firm belief that we are in a race of one. The world may appoint one person the “winner” and someone else the “loser”; but we really are in a pursuit of own highest potential. Winners and losers are an administrative detail.

Someone who works hard for years towards a goal is not a loser by any measure. They may not be labeled winner or victor, but they are an unqualified success.

There are many, many things that contribute to success. However, they can be broken down into five key ingredients that repeatedly create success.

  1. Talent – talent in a particular endeavor really is a baseline for success in that field. That’s not to say that you cannot derive satisfaction and happiness from painting even though you’ll never be Monet. You most certainly can! However, if your goal is success in a pursuit, it’s best to start with where your talent lies. Talent can be natural or developed.
  2. Motivation – all the talent in the world is nowhere without the motivation to develop it and advance it to a superior level. Motivation is a lot about excelling the talent and being willing to do the hard work. It’s also the mental part of the equation. Motivation is all about your thinking.
  3. Hard work – even in the age of electronic communication, social networking, and global media there is still no substitute for hard work. Success comes to talented, motivated, hard workers.
  4. A little help from your friends – it’s easy to see how this works in a team sport. A football team cannot win without a quarterback, offensive tackles, linebackers, punters, etc. Really, though, most high-level endeavors in life are a team effort. These Olympians we see winning medals have coaches, massage therapists, sponsors, and others that make it possible for them stand on that platform.
  5. Luck – there may be five really great sales professionals in a company, but only one is the top. Two great teams meet in The World Series every year, but only one great team becomes world champion. Sometimes you can have other four factors and it comes down to the way a ball bounces. Luck can be the deciding factor between individuals or teams that have done the other four. However, luck is overrated by many people who see all success as luck. It rarely is. Many people give up when luck goes against them. The key is to start right back with the motivation and start the process again. You were not the top sales person this time, but you can be next time. You can lose the Super Bowl by inches, but start again at training camp with the goal to get there again.

Focus on What You Control – The Affirmation Spot for Monday August 31, 2009

Today’s thought is:

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”
~ John Wooden

I often encounter people who look at the world in horror and say, in desperation, “I want a different world, but what can one person do?” Similarly, there are people who feel powerless to change their own lives for the better. They allow what they cannot do to stop them from doing what they could do.

The problems that face us individually and collectively can be overwhelming at times. Their enormity depresses some, makes others apathetic, and still others angry.

The amazing thing is that these same conditions inspire others to strive for something better, more complete, more empowering. The key is to focus on what we can do rather than what we cannot.

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.”
~ Oliver Wendell Holmes

John Wooden’s accomplishments, while not world-changing, are staggering in sports terms. He led the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team to 10 NCAA national championships in 12 years between 1964 and 1975. In that span his teams, went undefeated four times. Only one team in men’s college basketball has completed an undefeated in the 33 years since.

As a revered coach, Wooden’s words have become legendary. Today he is 97 years old. Someone who has achieved that level of success in any field and that scale of longevity bears listening to.

Coach Wooden tells us not to let what we cannot do interfere with what we can.

  • Maybe you can’t end world hunger today, but you can donate time or money to those helping to feed the hungry.
  • Maybe you can’t create a more just political system overnight, but you can collaborate with others and take steps that will get us there one day.
  • Maybe you can’t attain your financial goals today, but you can begin making the changes and taking the chances that will lead you to that goal one day.
  • Maybe your life is too filled with stress and pain to achieve complete happiness today, but you can at least begin releasing the stress and the pain so that one day you can know that happiness.
  • Maybe your dream of being a world-class dancer has to wait another year, but you can still work on perfecting the dance in preparation for that day.
  • Maybe world peace is not in the cards for humanity today, but you can create a more peaceful world through every encounter you have today.
“Actually, I’m an overnight success, but it took me twenty years.”
~ Monty Hall

The fact is that you may not reach the mountain top today. That does not mean you stop climbing. For these days when you worried, stressed, and strove over your goal, will be “the stuff” the dream is made of when you do achieve it.

Follow your bliss! Experience your bliss! Become your bliss!

Affirmations Help You Achieve Goals – The Affirmation Spot for Monday August 24, 2009

Ray’s Daily Affirmation:

“I am the engine for my dreams. My dreams never give up on me and I never give up on them.”

Affirmations have many applications. Really, any aspect of your life that can benefit from more positive self-talk – just about every area – can benefit from affirmations. Two uses for affirmations are achieving goals and overcoming adversity.

Coach and motivator Scott Armstrong describes his own use of affirmations in achieving his goal of running in the Boston Marathon and overcoming adversity in the middle of a marathon.

What’s your goal today? Affirmations are a powerful tool that can help you achieve those goals. Get Scott’s book “Boston Marathon or Bust” at Amazon.

Make it an awesome Monday and stay inspired!

Be Do Have – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday June 17, 2009

Today’s affirmation is:

“I believe wholeheartedly that I am part of the solution in my life and in my world.” (click the affirmation to hear the mp3 version)

Today I am posting a video discussing the Be, Do, Have formula described in Mark Victor Hansen‘s book The One Minute Millionaire. The video positions the ideas for people in creative pursuits. However, the concept is really applicable to anyone.

Affirmations are a particularly good tool for helping you achieve the Be phase of this process. It calls for firmly establishing (in your mind) that you are – in the present – what you want to become.

green_leaves_sunlight.jpgToday’s affirmation:

“Your life is coming together in a complete and perfect way. You are doing all that is necessary, accepting all that is necessary, and releasing all that is necessary for your life to come forth and blossom. Give yourself credit for your accomplishments; cut yourself some slack for your mistakes. Know that all leads to your growth and healing. Be happy an enjoy life!”

When you accept that your life is coming together just as it should, you are free to challenge yourself to stretch beyond your limits.

On my journey this day, I follow in the footsteps of the immortals. The imprints they have left behind on the Earth are large and their strides are a stretch for me. Yet, if I dare not encounter them and measure myself by them, how shall I ever know the true immensity of my own being?

So, I step consciously into the light; walking the path they once walked. Leaving it, occasionally, and improvising. Adding to it qualities uniquely my own.

Breathing with the trees and conversing with the clouds, as once they did. Our collective wisdom grows until no distinction remains among the path, the immortals, and me.

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” ~ Henry Ford

“There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.” ~ John Ruskin

Right now is the time to open yourself to the possibility of ignoring limitations and going beyond self-imposed boundaries. For the fear and anxiety you experience are nothing but the shadow of unfulfilled promise.

arms_stretched.jpgThe world is full of opportunity and peril and a little of each in the other. It is ever forming and reforming; manifesting in precise accordance with our expectations. For your world lives in your mind long before it becomes visible; shaping itself to your perception of what is possible.

What is set in stone today is the dust in tomorrow’s breeze. Remember you are creating tomorrow’s results with every thought, word, and action today. Change is the catalyst for your betterment and your imagination its only limitation. Make the most of this blessing given you to personify the fruition of the promise that dwells within.

Each moment is a gift providing you with a fresh start on which to build a life filled with things more precious to you than your problems.

Take Time to Slow Down – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday February 24, 2009

Today’s Affirmation:

“”I’m a high achiever, but when I need down time I recognize it and I take it!””
(Click the affirmation to add to your mp3 player)

Hey, you’re a human being, not a robot. It’s a wonderful thing to be a super achiever and most days you are. Wisdom, however, dictates that you recognize when enough is enough.

You all remember the story of the tortoise and the hare. It’s a long race and you need to find respite now and again, if you are to complete it successfully. It’s perfectly OK, and really necessary, to transition freely from tortoise to hare and back.

Your dreams are still there. They are not so fickle that they will spoil because you take one day to cool it! The key is to recognize you need it and take it without beating yourself up the whole time. That defeats the purpose.

You can be the hare again tomorrow, but on the days when you need to be the tortoise accept it.

Are You Pole-Vaulting in Quick Sand?

Today’s Affirmation:

“I succeed by helping my clients succeed.”
(Click the affirmation to hear the mp3 version)

pole_vault1The image is rather humorous to imagine, isn’t it? Picture a pole-vaulter racing down the track and planting his pole in a vat of quick sand to launch. What do you think would happen?

Yet many of us do that every day. Our careers, businesses, and personal lives are a lot like a pole-vaulting competition. As we progress, someone keeps moving the bar higher each time. Have we set a firm foundation for success?

The pole represents the actions we take to “vault” over our goals. Our thoughts are the foundation we use to launch. If our thoughts are like quick sand – not empowering and supportive of our goals – then no amount of action is going to get us where we want to go. We have to have a solid foundation from which to launch our activity.

Unfortunately, establishing and maintaining success-generating thoughts is not a “once and done” proposition.

Henry David Thoreau once wrote:

“As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.”

Here are some simple steps to help you create a firm mental foundation for your actions.

  • Add Thinking Time – Many people forget to account for time to think, imagine, and dream. When you start a new project or create an action or business plan add “thinking time” into your time line as the first step. Thinking before you act creates a firm foundation for success.
  • Empower Your Thinking – Now that you’ve added thinking time focus on creating the kinds of thoughts that support your plans, goals, and dreams. Elevate your strengths and abilities and reduce focus on negatives and naysayers. Harness the power of your thinking to propel you forward rather than hold you back.
  • Rinse and Repeat – Keep the positive, empowered thoughts coming. As you move forward, you may encounter doubts or headwinds.  Your thoughts are a critical buffer to keep you going. Many, many people give up as soon as the obstacles appear because their thoughts have not prepared them to handle it. Stay focused on your mental game to keep your edge and weather storms.
  • Grow and Change – Even power thoughts can be misdirected. The point is not to beat your head against an unmovable wall. That is stubbornness not success. An empowered thinker is constantly reevaluating and adjusting course to keep steering towards the goal. Sometimes the goal even changes through the process. Be adaptable and ready transition your thoughts to support the new goal.

Particularly in the current environment, your thoughts are your life-line to keep you going. Make sure they are rock solid and not quick sand. The bottom line is that the first step to any achievement is an empowered thought. The secret to sustained success is constant maintenance of your thinking.

Make getting your thoughts empowered, aligned, and on board the first step in every action plan or business plan you create. Don’t try to pole-vault in quick sand.

Think It! Believe It! Do It! Be It!
