Positive Political Poll Update – The Affirmation Spot

campaign08.jpgAbout four weeks ago, I began taking an unscientific poll asking readers a political question not being posed in the myriad of professional political polls being conducted right now.

The question was:

Which major presidential candidate do you believe has the most positive message for America in 2008 and why?

Here are the results to-date. Please note that I began the poll before the slew of recent withdrawls. Nonetheless, the results are somewhat surprising for two of the five candidates still in this race.

Candidate with the most positive message:

  1. Barack Obama          43%
  2. Ron Paul                 21%
  3. Mike Huckabee        12%
  4. Hillary Clinton            6%
  5. John Edwards            6%
  6. Mitt Romney              6%
  7. John McCain              3%
  8. Rudy Guiliani              0%

As to the question of why the selected candidate is the most positive in this year’s campaign.

  1. Believability            18%
  2. Integrity                15%
  3. Hope                     15%
  4. Policies                  12%
  5. Truthfulness           12%
  6. Vision                    12%
  7. Principles                 9%
  8. Faith                       3%

Forest Dreams: A Guided Meditation for Relaxation – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday February 12, 2008

Today’s Thought:

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
~ Lao-tzu

Years ago when I found myself in some very difficult personal circumstances, I used to record guided visualizations and meditations to help move my life in a positive direction. Today I am sharing an abridged version of one that always had a powerful impact. I recorded this one about 1993 and played it each night when I went to bed.My recommendation is to record it and play either at bed time or at a time when you can relax and focus for about 15 minutes. I am also going to be recording this and offering it on The Affirmation Spot.com in the near future.

woman_relaxing_zoom.jpgForest Dreams: A Guided Meditation for Relaxation and Confidence

Finding yourself in a comfortable position, you close your eyes and begin the process of relaxing and letting go. You are gently releasing the worries and stresses that have accumulated today. They are peacefully fading away, fading away, they are now so far away. You are entering a pleasant state of absolute serenity and bliss; coming to rest in that immovable center within. All within you and all outside of you lives in total harmony.

Take a deep breath…exhale…feeling yourself going deeper, deeper, deeper. Again take a deep breath…and exhale. Feel yourself releasing and relaxing…and letting go. Letting go is so easy for you at this moment. It is not about thinking or doing, but simply being. Allowing this moment to unfold as it will and be what it is.This is your time. Let it be a nourishing time; a time to receive positive energy. No effort and no strain. You are coming to a gentle stillness within and without.

You are becoming fully aware of this very moment. You watch it come, you watch it be, and you watch it pass. You accept it without judgments for exactly what it is; letting go of your tendency to want things to be different than they are. And as you allow the moment to be exactly what it is, you are allowing yourself to be exactly as you are.

You know for certain that you have the inner resources to face whatever comes your way.

Now visualize yourself sitting or lying in a grassy clearing in the middle of a great forest. You feel a gentle breeze blowing across your body. Above you the sky is blue and the sun is warm and comfortable on your skin. Off in the distance, you hear the sound of a stream slowly meandering its way through the forest.

The warmth of the sun is penetrating your skin and into your muscles and tendons and bones. As it does, a deeper level of peace and relaxation sweeps over you.

It is a beautiful day, a day of hope for the future; a day of limitless beginnings. For your life is like a garden, you must plant it and tend it before the harvest comes.  You must nurture the garden of your life as you go. Weeding it of old destructive patterns of thought and action.

Making sure it receives the love and care necessary for its growth and ultimately its blossoming.  As with any garden there must come times of sunshine and times of rain both of which must be if the garden is to succeed and flourish. And though it is easier to find joy in the sunshine than in the rain; if you stand in the rain willingly and understand its nature and necessity you will come find it even sweeter than the sunshine. For both are essential to growth.

The sunshine is the provider of life, doing its work over long hours, days, and weeks.  The rain is occasional, yet it is truly the source of rapid growth and advancement.  It does its part in short increments and brings newness to all it touches. Thus is balance maintained in a garden and in our lives.

Remembering this allows you to find peace in the heated moments of life and joy in darker days.  Now stand and look at your surroundings.  Feel, sense the wisdom to be found here in this beautiful forest.  Be aware of the gentle breeze that blows past you, around you, through you.  Witness the how light and dark play off each other in these woods just as they do in your life.

forest1.jpgHear the gentle whisper of the rustling leaves speaking to you the secrets of your life.  Now looking to the left you see a giant Redwood tree. Walk over, greet it, and embrace it as an old friend. Knowing that you are brothers on this earth, each a part of the other. Ponder the truth of your dependence on this tree and its dependence on you and, in fact, the interdependence of all of nature.

Fragile as a spider’s web and yet indestructible.  Feel your deep, sub-atomic connection with the entire environment and understand the trust that must be kept between you and it.

Experiencing this oneness of nature and yourself, commit yourself not to damage it, to take only what you need from it, and to put back what you can.  Feel this commitment gelling in your mind and now solidifying for all time.  Bear in mind that in every moment nature freely shares the bounty of its air, water, and food with you: how it literally sustains your life.  Be thankful and reverent toward it.
Accept the fact that change must occur in order for your life and all life to evolve. “We must often change,” said Confucius, ‘if we wish to be constant in happiness and wisdom.”

Life is an ever-evolving struggle between change and balance. Balance requires the flexibility to deal the incessant flux of life in our universe. One moment is joy and the next is pain. Your evolution requires that you accept both without over-indulging either. Our world is full of peril and opportunity and a little of each in the other.

Leaning against the giant redwood is a wooden staff.  It will be your guide on this great journey upon which you now embark.  It is a beautiful day in the forest. The sun is shining above and the stream gently rolls its way through this place.

Beyond the blue of the day sky lie the vast starfields of our universe and each seems to beckoning you on a path they well know, but you just now begin.  As you start down this path, you resolve to make the most of this opportunity to grow.

A shining path appears before you winding its way through these woods as far as you can see. Now as you start down the path, your staff in hand, you resolve in your heart to make the most of this opportunity to change and create a fresh start.

As you begin your trek through this ancient forest, a new confidence and optimism is entering your life. Your whole being turns to view things in new and positive ways. A deep sense of self-worth, self-esteem, and self confidence permeates your entire being.

Your self doubt has evaporated. These feelings are unstoppable. You love and respect yourself. You know you are capable of achieving anything!

arms_stretched.jpg You are facing your difficulties and challenges head-on and successfully overcoming them. You take concrete, measurable steps to handle the circumstances in your life. You are organized, efficient, and successful. You know that your purpose and universal purpose are one and that no obstacle can prevent you from achieving your goals.

Life is good! You focus on the good things that are happening because you benefit in every way by doing so. You are passionate about life. You embrace it and engage it at every opportunity. You know your potential is limitless and you are living up to it every day.

Your life is shifting in a positive direction. You are vigorously healthy. Your creative energies flow freely and they are opening new possibilities for you constantly. You are strong, steady, and capable. You find balance and joy everywhere you go. Abundance and happiness are your constant companions.

You are attracting the people and circumstances that work towards your highest good. Whatever you need is coming your way.

Your wisdom and discernment pierce outer appearances to reveal the true nature of things. This gives you a compassion for yourself and for the world.

You are growing. You are building. You are succeeding. You can do it!

As you listen to this recording day by day, the suggestions are becoming your mode of living and thinking. Every fiber of your being lives in accord with what I am telling you. And, I am telling you a wondrous healing is taking place in your life. Possibilities you never considered are flowing your way. You are prepared to take advantage of them.

You are prosperous. You are positive. You are free. You are transformed.

If this is your normal bed time, you will drift into a deep and restful sleep. Your dreams are coming true. If this is not your normal bed time, return to your day full of the peace, the wisdom, and the confidence gained from this experience.

Follow your bliss! Experience your bliss! Become your bliss!

Remember Your Power – The Affirmation Spot for Monday February 11, 2008

copy-of-ray_hawaii1.jpgWhat Ray’s reading right now:

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose (Oprah’s Book Club, Selection 61)

Today’s affirmation is:

“The power that lies within me moves mountains and commands the seas.”

jesus_rs.jpgJesus stands alone in human history in one indisputable regard. An overwhelming majority of the human population reveres him in one way or another. For many, he is their lord and savior. For at least as many others, he is considered a great teacher or prophet. He is nearly universally accepted as one of great teachers.

Today’s blog is not about debating what Jesus represents to you. It is about asking you, revere him how you will, to look at something he said about you and accept that it is true. He said you probably have a deficit when it comes to faith, belief, and trust about how this universe works and about your capaibilities.

Two of my favorite verses in The Bible are Jesus’ statements to his disciples about the power that lies within. Jesus is clear in both instances. The disciples’ inability to create miracles was not due to their lack of power, but to their lack of faith.

mustardseed.jpgMatthew 17:19-20

“Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, ‘Why could we not cast it (a demon) out?’ He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Luke 17:5-6

“The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ The Lord replied. ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.'”

How’s your faith? You’ve probably got smaller issues to deal with than moving mountains into the sea. Although, some days, your struggles can seem that daunting.

I’m sure we could have a spirited debate, depending on your belief, as to how you access that faith and the power that comes with it. Nonetheless, Jesus clearly states that you have it, if you choose to have it. The price? Simply, belief that you can do it.

The power Jesus attributes to the mustard seed is the power to live in trust and without doubt. The mustard seed, as far as we know, does not have a highly conflicted and intelligent mind feeding it reasons not to believe. It trusts in God or the universe to provide for it. The mustard seed loses itself in the flow of that trust. It lives free of doubt.

Jesus is calling us to lose ourselves in that trust. If we can move beyond the doubt, we can find the power he describes.

It’s always been strange to me; this tendency humans have to see ourselves as less than we are. Why do we so readily accept negatives from the Bible and other sacred writings, but we cannot bring ourselves to believe the positives?

We believe, “I am a sinner.” That’s not a problem. But tell me I can move mountains into the sea? No way! This is just a spiritual example of the same negative self-talk that afflicts us in other aspects of our lives.

“I could never go to college.” “I will never have the relationship I want in my life.” “I am never going to pull out of this depression.”

St. Augustine is famously quoted as saying, “Miracles happen, not in opposition to nature, but in opposition to what we know of nature.”

We don’t believe we can move the mountain or go to college because they defy our belief quotient. That is what we believe “we know of nature”. And so, says Jesus, “You’re right.” Those miracles will not happen as long as that is our mindset. If we are looking for miracles – large or small – we must be willing to trust in what seems “in opposition” to nature.

I’m going to leave it to you to decide how much stock you want to put in Jesus’ words. You can choose to keep believing the negative thoughts that flow through your mind, limiting your life. Or, you can choose to believe that anything is possible and that, with the faith of a mustard seed, you can make it happen!

Let me just encourage you when life seems difficult to always remember who you really are.

What is Your Dream Vacation? – The Affirmation Spot Saturday Survey February 8, 2008

My Answer

ray_kona.jpgLast March my wife and I were fortunate enough to take our first trip to Hawaii.  We expected to enjoy ourselves, but we were unprepared for the unbelievable beauty of the place and the feelings it evoked in both of us.

So, this April we are making a return trip. Last year we sailed aboard NCL’s Pride of Hawaii. That ship was reassigned to the Mediterranean Sea.

This year we will be aboard Pride of America. Cruising is a fantastic way to see Hawaii. You travel at night. When you awake in the morning you’ve arrived at your next destination.

It gives you a chance to get a taste of each of the islands. For months after our first trip, I would close my eyes and see the incredible blue water off Kona or have a brief memory of our two mile trek across the lava fields to see “the newest land on earth.” I think often about the miles and miles of gorgeous beaches on Maui and the unspoiled wonder of the Nipali Coast.

Perhaps the most amazing place was the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park. In ancient times, it was known as the “Place of Refuge”. When someone was condemned to death their sentence was commuted if they could make it to this sacred place alive. Today this part of the Kona coast is definitely a refuge for the soul.

We are so looking forward to the return visit. After last year’s trip, we decided to make it a goal to move to Hawaii one day. This year’s trip will determine if we just had a crush or if it is true love. We’re pretty sure we already know!

This year I plan to blog from the ship during our trip. So I can share our Hawaii experience with readers of the blog.

Things I Learned from My Dog Part II – The Affirmation Spot for Friday February 8, 2008

The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life

Be sure and visit the blog Saturday for our weekly Saturday poll. Last week’s poll asked, “What one thing would you do to make the world a better place?”

mia_snow.jpgMia is our beautiful three year-old black lab. She is doesn’t know it, at least I don’t think she does, but she is a master teacher on the subject of life – a kind of canine Confucius. You see, she lives her life the way many of us set out to live ours. She knows what she wants and she goes for it and she never gives up.

You can characterize this trait as persistance.

When Mia wants something she can be highly persistent. For instance, I rarely get to sleep in on weekends anymore. Mia usually makes sure I’m up no later than 7 a.m. She doesn’t have to go out she just wants me out of bed. She has a very subtle approach and a clear strategy. She doesn’t bark or run around the room.

No, Mia persists with kindness.

It usually starts with her getting up on the bed and finding a way to lay her head on my chest. This is usually enough to wake me up. Then the licking begins. She licks my hand until I sleepily hide it under the pillow. Mia persists. She inches up her way up so that she can lick my chin.I’ve always been a night owl. On nights when I don’t have to go into the office the next day, like Friday nights, I’m often up late reading or working. So, I’m pretty determined to sleep in until at least 8:00. Mia, however, has different plans.

She’s probably spotted squirrels out playing in her backyard. She is, afterall, the fiercest squirrel warrior in five counties. She wants me to get up and let her out.  I want to sleep for a little longer.

Now she works her way up to my ear and starts licking. I’ve had enough and I tell her to go lay down. She complies, but she doesn’t give up. Mia persists. Usually, within five to 10 minutes, she’s back. She jumps up on the bed and plants herself on top of me with a sigh. She thinks she’s a lap dog even though she weighs 55+ pounds.

I hide my hands immediately. I mean I’m smarter than the dog, right? So, she starts with the chin and starts inching her way up until she’s licking me right on the face. Not one or two kisses, mind you, but a full barrage designed to end the stalemate.

Sometimes, depending on exactly how late I’ve been up the night before, this can go on for two or three cycles before I concede the point and get up and let her out. On the mornings this strategy doesn’t work, Mia has back up plans. Mia persists.

She waits until I’ve just dozed off again and then she sits at the edge of the bed and makes “crying sounds”. It’s like one of those alarm clocks that starts out low and grows louder until you turn it off. If this doesn’t work, Mia persists. If this strategy doesn’t work, she turns to her last hope – April. She starts bothering April. She’s not really trying to get April to get up. She just wants April to convince me to take her out. I usually don’t make it to 8:00.

Looked at in one way, not my tired early morning view, it’s all pretty humorous.

Persistence is one of those attributes that helps you go where you want to go in life. Unfortunately, you sometimes lose steam along the road to your dreams.

Here are Mia’s persistence tips:

  1. Be clear on what you want in your mind.
  2. Pursue your goal with all your might, but be kind. The world is full of mean people willing to succeed at the expense of others. Don’t be one of them.
  3. Be patient. The first lick doesn’t always do the job.
  4. Involve others and get their buy in to help you.
  5. Have back up strategies. Sometimes Plan A fails. That doesn’t mean your goal or your dream must fail. Devise new ways of succeeding.
  6. Never give up.
  7. Enjoy life. Mia always does!

Be peaceful Be prosperous!

Portugal Sets Pace on Green Energy – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday February 6, 2008

Thank you for visiting The Affirmation Spot. Your comments on the blog or this article are always welcome. Please click here to leave your comment.

copy-of-ray_hawaii1.jpgWhat Ray’s reading right now:

The Power of Kindness: The Unexpected Benefits of Leading a Compassionate Life

Be sure and visit the blog Saturday for our weekly Saturday poll. Last week’s poll asked, “What one thing would you do to make the world a better place?”

Today’s affirmation is:

“I am in touch with nature. Every day I feel my feet touch the earth. I feel the wind fill my lungs. I feel the water bring life to every cell of my being. I feel the warm sunshine on my face. I am in touch with nature.”

While larger countries debate “should we or shouldn’t we?” on renewable energy, Portugal has become the front line for renewable green energy sources.

In my mind, the debate on global warming is irrelevent when it comes to renewable energy. Whether human beings are contributing to global warming or it is simply a natural phenomenon seized on by power-hungry politicians and research funding seeking scientists; matters not. Cleaner, renewabale energy is the smart, positive way to feed our planet’s voracious appetite for energy.

In the United States, as well as many western nations, politicians have been talking and talking and talking about “renewable energy sources” and “energy independence” for decades now.

But, alas, Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell, and other fossil fuel heavyweights always seem to be blocking the path. These companies make nice commercials about their commitment to renewable energy. Meanwhile, they bank roll politicians who talk and talk and talk, but never seem to get around to acting.

“It’s not feasible,” goes the mantra, “alternatives are not competitive with fossil fuels.”

While the U.S. and other western nations debate, Portugal is acting. While the U.S. spends hundreds of billions of dollars a year to support an offensive posture half way around the world to protect it’s “vital interests” (i.e. – oil), Portugal is proving that alternatives can transform a nation’s power use and its economy.

Whoever becomes our next president, we are going to hear more talk. The time has come for this nation to act and follow Portugal’s lead. Don’t let anyone tell you it is impossible. The sky really is the limit in finding new and better ways to fuel our advancement.
