George Gurdjieff on Freedom and Self Development

Here is a quote from George Gurdjieff talking about the importance, significance, and urgency with which must address our self-development. The final line is very reminiscent of the Buddha’s aphorism that, “The problem is that you think you have time.”

He also astutely reminds us that freedom is the the best environment to pursue our goals of self-awareness. How true.

“We must strive for freedom if we strive for self-knowledge. The task of self-knowledge and of further self-development is of such importance and seriousness, it demands such intensity of effort, that to attempt it any old way and amongst other things is impossible. The person who undertakes this task must put it first in his life, which is not so long that he can afford to squander it on trifles.”

The Symbolic Mind – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday August 10, 2010

Today’s Affirmation:

My world is what I MAKE of it and today I CHOOSE to make it a beautiful place to be.

I find everything related to our minds fascinating. There are three vast unexplored frontiers in our world – the ocean floor, deep space, and the space between our ears. That third one just may be the most vast and amazing of all.

On the way home this afternoon, I heard a very interesting story on NPR’s afternoon news and information program All Things Considered.

Reporter Alix Spiegel did an amazing piece called “When Did We Become Mentally Modern”. The story talks about the importance of symbolic thinking in the way we conceptualize the world.

Listen to the Story

When you think about it this concept of symbolic thinking is very important describing and understanding our mental states. Often thoughts, ideas, and feelings appear in our minds as imagery in symbolic form. Those images and the stories we tell ourselves in support of them are critical to our mental well-being. The story provides plenty for you to consider as you learn to pay attention to your symbolic thinking.

Getting Out of the Gotta Zone – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday May 13, 2010

Today’s Affirmation:

My life is built on choices not chances. Today I choose the life of my dreams and I live it now.

How often do we say it or hear others say it: “I’ve gotta do this or I’ve gotta do that.” It seems our society is obsessed with “gottas.”  We stress ourselves over all the things we’ve gotta get done. What we have forgotten is that most of the things we’ve gotta do relate to choices we’ve made. Through time, we have convinced ourselves that theses gottas are necessities imposed upon us by others.

We seem to thrive on stress and worry. When one worry is resolved we seem to immediately start searching for the next thing to worry about like the addict seeking his next high. There is something within us that causes us to feel guilt if we aren’t doing SOMETHING.

Some might argue we gotta pay taxes, or conform to the law of gravity, or die. There are things that might be called the rules of life that we cannot get around.  Why enslave ourselves by applying “gotta” to them?  Most things we “gotta” do amount to no more than choices we’ve made related to who we are or who we think we are or who we think we’re supposed to be.

When you hear yourself saying “gotta” in any circumstance, ask the question, “Why must I do this? The “because” phrase that follows will tell who or what has conditioned you to think you “gotta” do that.  “Because my mom wants me to.” “Because what would my wife think.” “Because God says so.” “Because I need it to be happy.”  Your “because phrase” will also tell you what needs to be healed or let go of or faced to remove that “gotta” from your life.

If your “because” phrase is just old programming or isn’t really something you value, then you know you are dealing with a gotta that was once forced upon you from the outside, but now can be released.

Most of our gottas are really choices disguised as gottas.  If so, then it really isn’t a gotta imposed by the universe, but rather value judgments we have made or allowed to be made for us.

We have power over choices whereas a true gotta is dictated to us.  Thinking about things this way is very freeing.  Realizing that most our gottas really aren’t and taking responsibility for making the choices we want in our life is the first step towards getting out of The Gotta Zone.

Wishing you a peaceful and positive Thursday….

This time of the year many peoples’ lives are filled with family and community traditions. Tradition can provide us with a sense of continuity, connection to our past and to each other. These are all wonderful things.

However, tradition has an aspect that can hold us back in life. Tradition can become habitual, unquestioned thinking. Sometimes empowered people have to stop and ask the simple question, “Why?”

Habits – in our thoughts and in our actions – are a kind of tradition. When we want to make changes in our lives we have to first become consciously aware of the habit and then consciously choose to make the change.

There is a little story that illustrates how unconscious we can become in our traditions/habits.

Sarah was watching her mother prepare a holiday ham. The mother, as she always did, cut one inch off the end of the ham before sticking it in the oven.

Sarah asked, “Mommy, why do you always cut an inch off a ham before you stick it in the oven?”

The mother thought for a moment and replied, “I don’t know. My mother always cut an inch off the ham before she put it in the oven. Let’s ask her.”

So the mother calls the grandmother on the phone  asks, “Mom, I’m making a ham and Sarah wants to know why I always cut an inch off. I told her that you always did. Why do you do that?”

The grandmother answered, “I don’t know. My mother always did it.”

Finally, the three of them make a conference call to the great grandmother. The grandmother asks, “Mom why do you cut an inch off the ham when you cook it?”

The great grandmother says, “Oh, dear, I haven’t done that in years. I used to do that when you were a little girl because the oven we had in our apartment was too small to fit a ham.”

The moral of the story is that traditions can become unconscious when people simply follow and don’t stop to ask why. Originally, there was a very practical reason for cutting the inch off the ham. That reason had long since vanished. Yet, two generations had continued to make hams that way because no one stopped to ask why.

Be conscious of your habits and traditions so that you can keep the ones that add to your life and abandon those that keep you stuck in a rut.

Whatever I Need Always Comes My Way – The Affirmation Spot for Friday August 21, 2009

Ray’s Daily Affirmation:

“Whatever I need always comes my way!”
(Download mp3 of this affirmation)

raised_arms_horizonThose of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook have probably seen me post this affirmation: “Whatever I need always comes my way!”

Often, I post it with the recommendation to say it or listen to it 100 times a day and watch your life transform.

There is a story behind this affirmation and that recommendation. When I started writing and recording affirmations 20 years ago I used to record 60 or 90 minute cassette tapes of affirmations and “listen” to them while I slept at night.

My life was quite a challenge in every way you can imagine at that time. I began using affirmations to change the negative thoughts that had created my unhappy circumstances. After listening to the looping tape of affirmations, I found I awoke in the morning with the affirmations filling my mind – a good start to the day.

One affirmation in particular really resonated and always seemed to stand out from the rest. It would pass through my mind repeatedly all day. Eventually, I began saying it and later listening to it 100 times or more per day. As I did, my perspective changed dramatically.

It was simple and to the point: “Whatever I need always comes my way.”

Its simplicity and power are amazing. It really operates on two levels – attraction and acceptance. This affirmation fits in nicely with all the recent excitement over “The Law of Attraction”. It basically reminds you that you are always attracting “whatever you need” into your life. The vagueness of “whatever” makes it a good general, all-purpose affirmation.

The affirmation also speaks to a level of acceptance. It can be interpreted as meaning that whatever comes your way is what you need at that moment. Those things may or may not be what you consciously choose, but the affirmation asserts a perfection in the things that do come into your life. It encourages us to see the perfection in the midst of the chaos.

I still use this affirmation every day. It served me when I was down and out and it serves me today in helping me stay grounded and positive.

For those really trying to pull themselves out of a hole or those trying to transform or accept life’s ups and downs, this affirmation is a powerhouse and a keeper!
