Prayer of Affirmation – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday March 6, 2008

ray_launchpad.jpgWhat Ray’s reading right now:

April and I are reading A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. This is the latest Oprah’s Book Club selection. Oprah and the author Eckhart Tolle are hosting a 10-week online course covering this book began Monday March 3. The program begin each Monday evening at 9:00 eastern, 8:00 central time in the U.S. They recommend reading the book before the class. You can register for free at Oprah.com

Today’s featured affirmation is:

“My thoughts, my words, my actions really do create my world. That is why I think great thoughts, I say great words, and I take great actions.”
Hear an audio mp3 version of this affirmation right now.

Today’s article is a prayer I wrote back in 1993. I was at a very low moment in my life. On a particularly depressing day, this prayer suddenly emerged into my thinking. I felt compelled to pick up a pen and paper and write it down. It just seemed to gush out of me.The whole process took less than 10 minutes. For me, this prayer is a reminder that even the darkest moments of our lives contain within them the seeds of our healing.

I call it Prayer of Affirmation because, as you will see, the prayer is full of affirmations for the person praying it and for our world. May it bring something meaningful to your day.

christian_girl_praying.jpgI ask that I might be an instrument of peace in the world today. May I take care to think only thoughts that lead to a positive world for myself and for others. Help me to bear in mind the effect my thoughts have on the world that I come to experience. May I join with other compassionate souls to lend my thoughts and efforts to creating a better tomorrow for us all.

I am taking action to make the world a better place in every I affect it today. May I find peace and healing for myself as I work to be part of the solution in the world.

Grant me the strength within to love all living things and to make a positive impact on every soul I encounter today. May I attract positive people and circumstances to me that I may be more effective in my undertakings. May no one be too important nor to unimportant to greet with a kind word.

I seek the strength to live completely in love; releasing all my fears. I grant forgiveness to myself for all I hold against myself and for all I hold against another. May I be a tool of healing in the world.

I ask for the fortitude to be the embodiment of selfless harmony to whatever extent I am able today. I will be generous with my time, my resources and myself to the best of my ability without resentment or reluctance. For I know that what I give others I give to myself as well.

I seek happiness, peace, and freedom from suffering today. As such, I wish it for all beings as well. I am thankful for all that I have been granted. I am thankful for the beauty and harmony that exists all around me, if only I am willing to see it.

Finally, I seek a patient acceptance as events unfold in my life. Help me to see the big picture and not get bogged down by unimportant details. I understand that all I experience is chosen by me at some level for my benefit. Thus, I seek to understand, to learn, and to open myself to new possibilities.

Amen

213frkycoul__aa_sl110_.jpgAs many of you have probably noticed the past couple of weeks, my wife and I have been reading Eckhart Tolle’s new book A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.

The book is the latest Oprah’s Book Club selection. She thought so much of this book that she put together a 10-week global interactive webinar to share it with the world. The live webinar takes place each Monday night at 9 p.m. eastern, 8 p.m. central. In between classes, people can work on personalized workbooks and discuss the class online.

April and I registered for the class that started last night. We’ve been reading the book together. Right now we’re on chapter 3. Based on what I’ve read so far, I heartily recommend this book. If you are far along on your spiritual path, this book is going to remind you of some very important things that you may have forgotten or overlooked. If your journey is just beginning, this book provides a great foundation.

Last night during the live webcast there were a lot of questions from Oprah’s Christian fans about whether this book is “new agey” and fits with their Christian outlook. Several Christians gave testimonials as to how the book was strengthening and deepening their faith.

Eckhart Tolle, the author, provided some fantastic insight into the issue for Christians or others concerned about how the book meshes with their faith. Obviously, these are decisions that each believer must make for himself or herself.

The book is outstanding. Week one of the webcast was wonderful (with the exception of some technical issues). This morning the report on Oprah’s website was that 500,000 people were logged in simultaneously last night making it the largest single event in the history of the Internet. Oprah reported on her show yesterday that people from 139 countries had registered for the course.

The bandwidth (for those of you not familiar with how the Internet works, this is huge) was pushing 242 Gbps. That caused some technical issues. They are working to get the issue corrected for next Monday night’s session.

 It’s Not Too Late

It’s not too late to become part of this historic global webinar and get the benefits of the author’s insights as you read the book. Last night’s  first session can be downloaded to day from either Oprah.com or iTunes.

You can also still register for the webinar at on the registration page at Oprah.com.

Be peaceful Be positive!

Truth: A Matter of Perspective – The Affirmation Spot for Monday February 25, 2008

Today’s affirmation is:

“I am transforming judgment into understanding. I am the source of change in my life, in my group, and in this world.”

mushroom_cloud.jpgHow you see the world is really a matter of perspective.  Your absolute conviction in the truth as you see it, can be absolutely rejected by the next person with the same absolute conviction. When these views collide conflict often ensues. That is, when we insist upon our way or no way.

The fact is that we are beings living in a world that none of us completely understands. We can hide that fact beneath layers of belief in some ideology, religion, or even scientific certainty. The fact remains; we never have all the facts to pass the judgment we are often too ready to pass upon others.

In a world being shrunk by technology and proliferating civilization ending weapons, we might be wise to take stock. Given our permanent state of uncertainty, maybe, just maybe, we should think about giving the other guy a break.

This can be as simple as, “live and let live.” You don’t have to agree with the other person. You don’t have to endorse their behavior. You simply have to understand that you can never completely understand his or her perspective and he or she can never completely understand yours.

The world watched this week as Slavic nationalism was stoked by the declaration of independence in Kosovo. Turkey has become emboldened to start a low-grade war with the Kurds in Iraq. We have the ever-present monotheistic struggle for dominance in the middle east. The problem shows itself everywhere.

Narrow-mindedness and tribal group-think were luxuries humanity has lived with, despite the brutal consequences, throughout its history. We have reached the point now where it is about to the break budget for our survival on this planet.

Saddest of all, there are forces on this planet who have powerful control over information outlets and government who thrive and profit by stirring the conflict that generates wars and foments hatred. They have played the masses like a fiddle to keep us divided and powerless. For our world to take the next steps, the people must see the manipulators for who they are and negate their ability to lead us around by our collective noses.

The alternative, should we persist in our unwillingness to take this approach in world affairs, is the destruction of us all. Who will be right then?

Albert Einstein is famously quoted as saying, “The world’s problems will not be solved by the level of thinking that created them.” We are a world in desperate need of a new level of thinking. We need a level of thinking that is not so sure of our group’s perfection and the other group’s evil. We need a level of thinking that sees people as the human beings they are and not subhumans summed up by the term “them”.

We have the power to change our perspective and mend our ways. We can and we must! We have it within us to say, “enough”. It all begins with “live and let live”. Until we are willing to do it, we walk on dangerous precipices.

Back in 2003, I wrote the following simple dialogue between a student and his teacher to illustrate this point to a friend during a discussion. I used a non-human thing to take the emotion out of it and help focus on the concept.

Student: Master, why do people not seek truth?

Master: People do seek truth, but they confuse personal truth with universal truth.

Student: Master, what is the difference?

Master: Do you see the rock over there?

Student: Yes, Master, I see the rock.

Master: How are you different from the rock?

Student: Master, I have intelligence and wisdom. I can change and grow. I offer more value to the world than the rock.

Master: So you are more important than the rock?

Student: Yes, Master, I believe I am.

Master: What do you think the rock thinks of you? Do you think the rock sees its place in the universe as more important than yours?

Student: Perhaps, Master, but that is the rock’s point of view.

Master: Ahh, your truth puts you at the center of the universe. The rock’s truth puts it at the center of the universe. WHOSE TRUTH IS CORRECT?

Student: Master, I know not.

Master: When you have attained universal truth you will no longer be concerned with my question. You and the rock will live in harmony rather than conflict; he with his truth and you with yours.

Remembering Gandhi

Today’s Affirmation:

“When I lose my courage and my belief that I can transform the world I am always reminded that I have been blessed with the far more challenging and critical task of transforming myself.”

Originally posted in 2008.

GandhiThis past Wednesday marked the 60th anniversary of the death of Monhandas K. (Mahatma) Gandhi. He was struck down by an assassin’s bullet on January 30, 1948. His assassin was a Hindu extremist angry that Gandhi had made concessions to the newly formed Pakistan in an attempt to keep the peace.

On that January evening, one of the great lights of our time went out. Here was a man full of flaws, to be sure, but unifying figure in a chaotic time and place. He was a kind of George Washington (father of his country) and Martin Luther King (conscience of the country) rolled into one for India. He was the father of his country and used many civil disobedience tactics that would be employed by Dr. King a generation later.

His followers called him Mahatma (“great soul”) or Bapu (“father”). His message was popularized for the modern world in the 1982 academy award winning movie Gandhi starring Ben Kingsley. Gandhi’s tactics demonstrated that the sword and the power of an empire are no match for a determined man of peace.

Thankfully, his legacy lives on in the wise words he left for us to ponder.

Here are some of his most powerful and insightful quotes.

  1. “A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.”
  2. “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.”
  3. “Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.”
  4. “An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it.”
  5. “An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”
  6. “An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”
  7. “Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding.”
  8. “As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.”
  9. “Be the change you want to see in the world.”
  10. “Each one has to find his peace from within. And peace to be real must be unaffected by outside circumstances.”
  11. “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
  12. “I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill.”
  13. “I have nothing new to teach the world. Truth and Non-violence are as old as the hills. All I have done is to try experiments in both on as vast a scale as I could.”
  14. “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
  15. “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problem.”
  16. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
  17. “I have only three enemies. My favorite enemy, the one most easily influenced for the better, is the British Empire. My second enemy, the Indian people, is far more difficult. But my most formidable opponent is a man named Mohandas K. Gandhi. With him I seem to have very little influence.”

Follow your bliss. Experience your bliss. Become your bliss.

Metta and The Monk – The Affirmation Spot for Thursday January 24, 2008

Leave your comment on today’s blog

Today’s affirmation is actually a version of a Buddhist meditation called Metta (loving-kindness). This meditation is practiced by directing the following words at yourself. Then spreading them to loved ones and people towards whom you have positive feelings. Then applying them to people that you are neutral towards. Finally, you direct the meditation towards people you view negatively – enemies or people who have hurt you in life.

In my own practice, I have also expanded it to include all people and living things on the Earth and all living things where ever they may exist in the universe. Back in my days as a sales professional, I also would direct this meditation particularly at the customers I planned to call on the next day. It had an uncanny way of opening doors where they appeared to be closed.

“May I be happy. May I be peaceful. May I be free from suffering.” “May (fill in the name) be happy. May (fill in the name) be peaceful. May (fill in the name) be free from suffering.”

cave.jpgToday’s post is a random meandering from a few years ago. During my own meditations, this image of a monk sitting in the entrance to a cave kept appearing. He just sat there playing this old flute and meditating on the sound. He seemed to be communicating with me without saying anything.

How wonderful to remember that there are people out there who spend every waking moment hoping and believing in what the rest of us are capable of becoming.

“The Monk”

Gongs echo in the darkness of the valley below;
one hour to sun up.
Against the mouth of a mountain cave sits a solitary monk;
meditating on the sound of his weathered flute.

Clothed in tattered robe that once was of yellow tint;
he owns nothing in this world
but the peace of mind
born of transcendent joy.

Each morning at this very time he prays with every breath;
that those of us in the world below
would give up our anger, greed, and hatred
and be transformed by the profound bliss he knows.

Be peaceful Be prosperous!

Making The World A Better Place Today – The Affirmation Spot for Wednesday January 16, 2008

Today’s affirmation is:

“I make my world. My world is what I make of it and I choose to make it a compassionate place to be.”

hands1.gifHas the world gone nuts? It seems so some days. Thankfully, you need not wait for change to occur in the world. You can start right now to create a more sane and compassionate world in the ways you touch it.

The simple things are still the recipe for greater happiness. Treat others with kindness even when they don’t return the favor. Only use what you need. Maintain a measure of mindfulness with regard to your thoughts and activities. Join with others  who share your hope for a better, more evolved world and take the first steps today. Smile, lighten up, have fun, and enjoy your life on this beautiful world and in this marvelous Universe.

Take the Ten Commandments, The Golden Rule, the Five Precepts of Buddhism, or other ageless tenets and try living by them. Not under the commandment of any God, religious organization, or out of fear of punishment, but out of a recognition that they make rational sense and create a better world.

The philosopy you hold – Christian, Buddhist, Jew, Muslim, Hindu – is not what is ultimately important. What is important is being the most ethical, compassionate Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jew, or Buddhist you can be and the world will be a better place for it.

During his 1989 visit to Los Angeles, The Dalai Lama said, “We don’t need temple, we don’t big Cathedral. We need warmth of heart. We, each of us, have a responsibility to shape the future of humanity. So let us try and contribute as much as we can.”

You have the power right now to do the good that you see needs doing in the world. Certainly, collective action by a group is important, but your actions or inactions in your life today affect the world around you in big ways.  Never underestimate yourself and the power to influence things.

If someone cuts you off in traffic, don’t respond with anger that puts negative energy out into the universe. That helps. Not giving in to your own prejudices and weaknesses that contribute the problems in the world. That helps. Going out of your way to be friendly to a stranger just because. That helps.  There is no end to what you can do that will make the world a better place.

The problems we face in the world are a result of our interpersonal conflicts and our own internal conflicts projected out onto the world. If you do not address the anger and fear you feel in your own hearts you will only be bandaging the problems of the world.

With just a little effort today, you can make all the difference!

 Be peaceful Be prosperous!
