Why Not? – Countering Negative Premises – The Affirmation Spot for Monday April 7, 2008

A character in George Bernard Shaw’s play Back to Methuselah stated, “Some people see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not?”

Robert F. Kennedy used a paraphrased version of the quote in his speeches. Kennedy said, “There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

Why not, indeed?

Why not is a very important question. It’s the question we should always ask ourselves when we believe something isn’t possible for us for our world.

The world has hundreds of negative premises on which it operates. They should and must be challenged by a good why not.

  • We cannot have leaders who truly listen and respond to the will of the people who entrust them with their power. Governments have always been that way. We cannot expect them to change. Why not?
  • We cannot be responsible stewards of the environment without massive government taxation and regulation to tell us how. Why not?
  • We cannot coexist and build communities with people we disagree with religiously, politically, or economically on this planet. Why not?
  • We cannot feed the people of this planet without worrying about who gets paid for it. Why not?
  • We cannot do everything possible to see that every human being has an opportunity to pursue his or her talents to their full extent. Why not?
  • We cannot have a successful economy that doesn’t involve war and conquest for ideology and resources. Humans have always done this. We can’t change it. Why not?
  • A company must always have a bigger share of its market pie. It cannot be satisfied with merely employing thousands of people, keeping its customers happy, and making a healthy profit. Why not?
  • We cannot have a debt-free money supply and a banking system that doesn’t practice usury. Why not?

Each and every one of these negative premises is to some extent damaging people in our world. They make it harder for people to live their lives and get the most possible out them. We need to be asking a BIG why not on these issues and many others.

Someone owes us an explanation as to why the positive opposites of these premises are not the path we need to be following. Some can be reversed through our own personal actions. Others will require the disentrenchment of the powerful interests that keep these premises afloat.

Let’s pull this back to the personal level. You have negative premises too. Negative premises that are holding you back from your goals. Fortunately, the only entrenched interest you have to overcome to address them is you. I know, not always as easy as it sounds.

You don’t have to go to all the trouble of listing your negative premises. You probably could not come up with all of them anyway. Simply become aware of them when they appear. They are going to sound like the following.

  • I can’t pass the math test.
  • I can’t go to college.
  • I can’t get a better paying job.
  • I can’t be the top salesperson.
  • I can’t be the best baseball player.
  • I can’t be world-class musician.
  • I can’t be a good mother, father, grandmother, or grandfather.

I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.

Every time you hear an “I can’t” come into your mind, you are establishing a negative premise. Whenever you recognize your mind formulating a negative premise stop and challenge yourself. Demand to know why you cannot do whatever it is you want to do.

When you begin to put this into practice you will see that dreaming things that never were and asking why not is a powerful tool for success.

Finally, the vernal equinox – the astronomical event that signals the beginning of Spring is here. The equinox occurs when the Sun is positioned directly above the equator on its northward track that creates the warming of Earth’s northern hemisphere.

The big event occurs early Thursday morning – 1:48 A.M. – eastern daylight time (EDT) in the United States or 6:48 A.M. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

To quote The Beatles, “It’s been a long cold lonely winter.” I’m ready! How about you?

Spring is my absolute favorite season. As the life returns to the world outside, I can feel the life swelling inside of me.

Today I am sharing two short Spring poems. I wrote “Springtime Moment” about 1991. It was inspired by a moment laying in a field on a warm spring day and taking in the moment. “Paradise” was written at about the same time. It was just one of those verses that appears in your head and you write it down and slap your name on it. May your first day of Spring in 2008 be filled with moments like the ones described in these poems.

girl_tree_hphones.jpg“Springtime Moment”

Spread out on the warm spring grass
staring at the vast blue sky;
conscious of my smallness.

In each cloud a vision,
sometimes objects sometimes faces
ever shifting their position.

Heavens slowly turning;
the curve of the world may be seen
by eyes cast upward in dreamy wondering.

“Paradise”

Serene little sparrow calls
Finding hidden waterfalls
Napping near flowing streams
Dreaming timeless vernal dreams

Sitting, soaking quiet spaces
Seeking, finding all life’s graces
Restful, thankful for this day
Simple blessings come my way.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

Juanita R. Davis

Juanita R. Davis – my paternal grandmother – was born on December 18, 1904. Despite debilitating conditions that began very early in life, she lived life with an undeniable vigor and spunk.

Later in life she became a prolific writer and poet. She was published in numerous newspapers and regional magazines.

She died in October 1988. Before she left this world she inspired me in ways she knew and in ways neither she nor I can understand. Certainly, I write because of her. All these years later, she remains one of the steady influences on my life.

As we get ready to say goodbye to winter, I decided to share one grandma’s many poems. It fully displays her ironic sense of humor and desbribes the unpredictability of the weather during our uneasy transition from winter to spring.

She titled it “We Take It As It Comes”.

“We Take It As It Comes”

There’s no accumulation
Was what forecasters said
There’s no accumulation
So had naught to dread.

I crawled beneath the covers
And went right off to sleep
The “no accumulation”
Is now six inches deep.

Today I made a pathway
Almost a sidewalk wide
With “no accumulation”
Piled high on either side.

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

CALL Your Negative Thoughts – The Affirmation Spot for Monday March 17, 2008

woman_eyes_closed_sun_rs“Speak of the Devil and he appears,” goes the old aphorism. Some people in the positive thought movement seem to think the same thing about negative thoughts. They are something to be avoided at all costs. You must stamp them out like burning embers of a campfire to prevent their spread.

Obviously, the goal of positive thinking and affirmations is to diminish negative thoughts and counter them with positive thoughts. This is a worthy and highly beneficial goal that enahances your life.  Negative thoughts, however, are a natural part of being human. We all have them and we will always have them.

To panic and spend a lot of time concerning yourself with them, only causes them to blossom and grow. Recognizing them, accepting them, and letting them go steals their power and allows them to vanish back into the void from where they came. Having a negative thought is not the problem. Allowing them to become your habitual way of seeing things is what you want to avoid.

Actually, our negative thoughts provide a natural benefit. They spread light on the parts of us that need work and attention. If you always have negative thoughts about your job, maybe that part of your life needs some attention. If you have negative thoughts about certain people, those may be relationships that need work.

It’s rather entertaining sometimes to simply “thought watch”. Our minds are interesting things. When we relax, close your eyes, and watch your thoughts for a while you notice how impermanent thoughts are. They appear and create feelings. The disappear and the feelings disappear with them.

If your thoughts are very destructive and involve hurting yourself or others, get professonal help.
Here are four  things you can do to handle and live more harmoniously with common negative thoughts. They form the word CALL.
  1. Counter – counter your negative thoughts with tools like affirmations. Persistent negative thoughts can be countered and changed by offering a positive alternatives.
  2. Accept – accept that you will have negative thoughts and it’s OK. You’re human afterall. No beating yourself up.
  3. Listen – listen to your negative thoughts. They may provide insight into where you need to focus your self-improvement efforts.
  4. Laugh – some of your negative thoughts really are pretty funny when you get enough perspective. Lighten up and see the humor in the way your mind works.

I’m not saying don’t try to transform your negative thoughts into something positive. I’m just saying that when they want to come out and play, CALL allows you to say, “Bring it on!”

Be peaceful Be positive Be prosperous!

9 Reasons MP3 Affirmations Rock – The Affirmation Spot for Tuesday March 11, 2008

Today’s Affirmation:

“I believe wholeheartedly that I am part of the solution in my life and in my world.”

Over the past several months, I’ve been conducting an Internet survey on how people use affirmations. My goal is eventually to use the research to write a book about affirmations.

I’ve been a little surprised by the results of the survey. Only 43% of people who use affirmations report that they are using some form of audio affirmation. Of those using audio affirmations, less than half are making use of mp3 affirmations. That means only 18% of affirmation users are taking advantage of the MP3 format.

The proliferation of iPods, MP3 players, and MP3-capable cell phones makes it easier than ever to take affirmations and positive thoughts with you wherever you go and use them whenever you want. The great part is that you don’t even have to have an MP3 player or iPod to take advantage of it.

But why audio affirmations and specifically MP3 affirmations?

9 Reasons MP3 Affirmations Rock!

  1. Play flexibility – as compared to other audio formats, MP3 affirmations are the most flexible. They can be played on an array devices – iPods, MP3 players, MP3-capable cell phones, MP3-capable PDAs, your computer, or even burned to a CD – while tapes and CDs are limited to devices capable of playing them.
  2. Select flexibility – MP3 affirmations are often available as individual tracks. This allows you to select only the specific affirmations you want rather than having to pay for affirmations you will never use.
  3. Save money – as compared with any other types of audio affirmations, MP3 downloads save money. They can often be purchased as individual downloads like a song from iTunes rather than as expensive packages.
  4. Mirror negative information – audio affirmations mirror the way you get most of your negative information (through sound). Audio affirmations directly counter the negative audio information that accumulates as you go through the day.
  5. Save time – audio affirmations – unlike read affirmations, visualization board affirmations, subliminal software, and spoken affirmations – do not require you to set aside time to use them. Your full concentration is not required. They are perfect for multi-tasking. I often listen to affirmations while I’m working, exercising, or doing other activities. In fact, I find this kind of passive listening some of the most beneficial. You absorb the affirmations the way you absorb words to a song you didn’t even know you were listening to it.
  6. Increase enjoyment – listening to affirmations can be very enjoyable. This is especially true when they are set to music. You can easily create an affirmation playlists on your MP3 player or your computer’s media player or mix the affirmations in with your regular music playlists for added motivation.
  7. Privacy – with headphones audio affirmations can be used virtually anywhere without anyone else knowing what you are doing. Again, other affirmations forms do not lend themselves to this kind of privacy. Books, websites, and computer screens can all give away what you are doing.
  8. Use anywhere – with the previously mentioned portable devices, your affirmations can go with you to be used exactly when and where you need them. Take your affirmations into the locker room before the big game. Listen to them on the way to the big sales call or even while you wait for your meeting. Listen to them when you’re relaxing in the hammock. Absorb your affirmations along with “the sun” while tanning. Anyplace your portable device goes, your affirmations can follow.
  9. Better for the Environment – MP3 downloads have one very specific advantage over their CD, DVD, and cassette tape counterparts. They are far more environmentally friendly. Read this article describing the impact digital media – their production and disposal – has on the environment. Downloadable MP3 affirmations are “the green way” to get your affirmations.

The MP3 revolution can make your affirmations more effective, easier to use, and less expensive. Are you taking advantage of it?

oprah.jpgAfter last week’s first episode of Oprah’s Big Give, many critics expressed discomfort with people in need being “used” as part of a competitive reality TV show. Episode 2 continued to prove the critics fears are misplaced. This week people all over Denver benefited from the giving generated by the show. Real people received real help for real needs.

Big Give rolled into the Mile High City and taped the episode under tight secrecy in July, according the The Rocky Mountain News.

The nine remaining contestants had 48 hours to find someone in need in the Denver metro and “give big or go home.” With one giving experience under their belts, the contestants really cut loose to truly demonstrate their passion for and commitment to helping others.

Contestants Stephen Paletta (Contractor), Eric Klein (Model), and Cameron Johnson (self-made millionaire) teamed up to raise over $283,000 for the Denver Childrens’ Home. The donations included a new playground and cash and contractors’ time and materials to remodel the home.

Contestant Kim Prentiss worked with the Denver Broncos to identify Boys and Girls Clubs as her charity for the week. In addition to donating iPods, computers, and other goodies, she secured a football autographed (and delivered) by Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler and two of his Bronco teammates. The ball was to be given to one deserving child based on school performance.

Olusegun “Sheg” Aranmolate practiced old-fashion giving by finding individuals in need and handing out money to help them with those needs. He probably made a personal difference in the lives of more people than any other contestant this week.

However, the contestant of the week has to go to TV producer Carlana Stone. Stone found a family in need by talking to people on the street. Her target family included Blair, a 16-year-old girl, struggling with disabilities that made it impossible for her to verbally communicate with others and her older brother Bryce needing financial help for his goal to attend college.  In two days, Stone raised enough money to help the family purchase an electronic device that will allow Blair to speak to her family for the first time and additional money to be used towards helping Bryce go to college.

This week’s big twist came when Oprah asked the contestants to give away the Ford Edge they had been driving. Carlana, herself a paraplegic, had  a car specially equipped. She was able to donate her car to a paraplegic man just leaving the hospital after recovering from his injuries. The man lacked the means to purchase his own car.

Two weeks into the show and hundreds of people already helped by complete strangers on a mission to do good. I suppose the show’s critics can and will continue to attack Big Give. Let them! Real people are receiving real help for real needs. Don’t look now, but Big Give might just change the image of reality TV.

Be peaceful Be prosperous!
