Quotes About Dealing with Suffering – The Affirmation Spot for Saturday January 22, 2011

Today’s Affirmation:
Breathing in, I experience my suffering. Breathing out, I transcend it.

Suffering is something we all experience at various moments in our lives. Sometimes it is inflicted by others and sometimes it is inflicted by our own thinking. Suffering, though, is a mental state as opposed to pain which is a physical reality. Some get caught in suffering and feel that they cannot escape. I assure you that escape and steps forward beyond suffering to more positive mental state are always, always possible.

Today I thought I would share some of the wisest quotes I’ve come across on the subject.

May you be happy, peaceful, and free from suffering this day.

“For as long as space remains
And as long as sentient beings remain
Until then may I too remain
To dispel the suffering of all beings.”

~Shantideva

“Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.”

~Haruki Murakami

“Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of overcoming it.”

~Helen Keller

“I have not yet met with a sorrow that could not be borne, nor with one who’s passing did not leave me stronger.”

~Kathryn L. Nelson

“I cannot believe that the inscrutable universe turns on an axis of suffering; surely the strange beauty of the world must somewhere rest on pure joy!”

~ Louise Bogan

“Man suffers most from the suffering he fears, but never appears, therefore he suffers more then god meant him to suffer.”

~ Dutch Proverb

“Suffering is but another name for the teaching of experience, which is the parent of instruction and the schoolmaster of life.”

~ Horace

“Suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.”

~ Romans 5:3-4

““The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering.”

~ Ben Okri
